Various methods, techniques or modules are provided to allow for the automated analysis of the 3-D representation of the upper front torso (i) to recognize 3-D anatomical features, (ii) to orient the subject with reference to their anatomy or a display, (iii) to determine dimensional analysis including direct point-to-point lines, 3-D surface lines, and volume values, (iv) to simulate the outcome with the addition of breast implants including breast and nipple positioning, (v) to assist in the selection of the breast implants, and/or (vi) to assist in the planning of breast surgery. The automated analysis is based on the analysis of changes in a 3-D contour map of the upper torso, orientation analysis of 3-D features and planes, color analysis of 3-D features, and/or dimensional analysis of 3-D features and positions of the upper torso.

A medical implant assembly and method having a medical implant, e.g. a breast prostheses, attached to a biological interface. The biological interface is comprised of a dermal material with capsular contracture inhibiting properties so that once the medical assembly is inserted into the host, the biological interface, which is intimately coupled to the implant, prevents/reduces capsular contracture formation around the implant. The biological interface comprises a plurality of apertures along its periphery, and attaches to the medical implant by receiving a plurality of attachment flaps or appendages located on the exterior surface of the medical implant within or through the apertures. The attachment of the biological interface is such that the assembly remains intact even where the attachment flaps loosen upon expansion of the implant after insertion into a host, as where the implant is therein injected to a desired dimension.

A variable cohesive gel form stabilizing implant is disclosed for augmentation or reconstruction of the breast. The prosthesis of this invention comprises an implantable shell or envelope (not limited to a single shell or envelope), filled with a biocompatible gel, or gels, having alterations in gel cohesiveness to maintain stable form, shape, and dimension after surgical implantation. The gel cohesiveness may increase, with increased volume or dimension of the prosthesis. The variable cohesiveness of the gel filler material may be altered by any means (i.e. chemical, fabrication, etc.). The variable cohesive gel form stabilizing implant has shape retention characteristics to maintain its form, thereby reducing or eliminating the undesirable effects of shell wrinkling, knuckling, scalloping or deformation, which can occur at the upper or lower pole of the prostheses, along the perimeter of the shell or at the base, post-implantation. Finally, the variable cohesive gel form stabilizing implant provides new control and possibilities for achieving and preserving the most natural breast shape.

A skin protector and accessories for protection of a skin incision during minimally invasive surgical procedures requiring protection from thermal and frictional abrasion, for example, during ultrasonic-assisted liposuction. The skin protector incorporates an outer configuration to assist in maintaining in situ positioning of the skin protector during operative procedure. An introducer member for blunt dissection of a tunnel is provided to allow easy insertion of the skin protector. A driver member for dilatation of the skin incision, and for facilitating implantation and withdrawal of the skin protector is provided with a complementary configuration to that of the skin protector to cause the skin protector to be taken along with rotary motion of the driver member.

A skin protector and accessories for protection of the skin incision during ultrasonic-assisted liposuction from thermal and frictional abrasion includes a skin protector made from sterilizable material which resists deformation and incorporates an outer configuration to assist in maintaining in situ positioning of the skin protector during operative procedure. An introducer member for blunt dissection of a tunnel is provided to allow easy insertion of the skin protector and ultrasonic probe. This invention relates to a medical prosthesis containing a gel filler material comprising principally a cellulose derivative in water. The gel filler in the prosthesis may further contain a lubricating agent. The invention also relates to a method of augmenting or reconstructing a human breast comprising the steps of subcutaneously implanting a medical prosthesis with the gel filler material into a human body. In another aspect, the invention relates to a method of preparing medical protheses comprising the steps of filling an outer envelope of a medical-grade elastomer with the gel filler material and sealing the envelope to form a medical prosthesis. The components of the gel are preferably biocompatible so as not adversely to affect human beings. The materials used to make the gel filler are non-toxic. The prostheses of the present invention have similar characteristics to the human breast. These protheses may be used for breast augmentation or reconstruction.

A fluid-filled breast prosthesis for surgical implantation beneath the skin having a wrinkle resistent, elastic outer shell which is adapted to resist deformation or wrinkling during movement of the fluid filler. The outer shell, or envelope, has superior and inferior portions. The wall of the superior portion of the shell is substantially thickened with respect to the wall thickness of the inferior portion of the shell. The shell forms an envelope with an inner cavity which is filled with a biocompatible liquid such as saline. The presence of the thickened superior portion of the shell prevents wrinkles from forming in the breast prosthesis during fluid displacement such as occurs when the breast prosthesis recipient changes her anatomical position. The differentially thickened shell has a posterior base portion which may be reinforced to further stabilize the prosthesis.
