A cathode ray tube includes an evacuated envelope having an inner surface supporting an arc limiting coating which includes insulator oxide particles, graphite particles and a silicate binder and is characterized by the improvement of insulator oxide particles having an exothermic heat of formation greater than the exothermic heat of formation of iron oxide.

Cathode ray tube arc limiting coating

A method is provided for disposing a tripartite electrical connective-resistive system of related coating areas upon interior portions of a cathode ray tube envelope to effect arc suppression in the region of the electron generating assembly. The tripartite means is comprised of a first low resistive electrical conductive coating disposed on the forward portion of the envelope. A durable high resistive electrical conductive coating is disposed contiguous to and rearward of the first coating extending therefrom to the neck of the envelope. This resistive coating is an amorphous deposition of a homogeneous composition of an insulative vitreous frit material admixed with at least one particulate material selected from the group consisting essentially of cadmium oxide, indium oxide and copper oxide. The third component of the system is a second low resistive electrical conductive coating exhibiting a scratch-resistant surface disposed as a circumferential band in the forward portion of the neck member, being contiguous with the rear boundary of the high resistive coating.

Method of depositing tripartite coating system for a cathode ray tube

In an optical scanning exposure system for manufacturing cathode ray tubes having a faceplate with an inner surface layer of photosensitive material and an adjacent apertured mask wherein the exposure system includes a light source providing a light beam, an angle of incidence deflector means for deflecting the light beam at an angle related to the angle of incidence of an electron beam, means for imaging the light beam, and a means for scanning the light beam in a predetermined fashion over the apertured mask to expose the photosensitive material, a control system having a means for storing information representative of the angle of incidence of a light beam and the rate of scanning of a light beam between a matrix of positional locations on the faceplate, a scan rate means for controlling the rate of horizontal and vertical light beam scanning, an encoder means providing light beam positional information to the storage means, and an angle of incidence control means for activating the angle of incidence deflector means in accordance with angular information of the storage means. Other aspects of the invention include controlling the integral with respect to time of the light beam intensity to effect uniform photosensitive material exposure, controlling movement of the effective light beam source to control the size and shape of the exposure area, and controlling the overlapping and overscanning of the light beam scanning to minimize stripes of unexposed photosensitive material and to provide uniform exposure at the edges of the faceplate.

A process for fabricating lenses for use in manufacturing cathode ray tube screen structure wherein a matrix of data points is selected on the viewing screen of the cathode ray tube and a light source is positionally located at each of the data points by optical scanning exposure apparatus. The location information for each of the data points is recorded and a cathode ray tube is constructed having the screen structure fabricated in accordance with the recorded light source location information. Error between the light source location information and electron beam landing of the cathode ray tube is measured and the error measurements are utilized to correct the light source location information which is then submitted to a lens design program to furnish lens manufacturing information.

An optical scanning apparatus for manufacturing cathode ray tubes having a faceplate with an inner surface layer of photosensitive material and an adjacent apertured mask wherein a light beam from a light source is applied to a deflection device controlled by a control circuit to effect deflection of the light beam at an angle related to the angle of incidence of an electron beam in a cathode ray tube. The deflected light beam is imaged onto the inner surface of the faceplate of the cathode ray tube through the apertured mask, and a device is provided for scanning the deflected light beam over the surface of the faceplate in a predetermined pattern to effect exposure of the photosensitive material in the proper locations for registration with the landing location of an electron beam in the cathode ray tube. The size and shape of the effective area occupied by the light beam at the scanning device is controlled to effect proper selection of the size and shape of the exposed photosensitive material in relation to the associated aperture in the mask. Depending upon the desired shape and size of the exposed photosensitive material on the faceplate, the light beam area at the scanning device may be made to simulate a point, line or area source.

A process for forming a color cathode ray tube screen structure, having means for enhancing the absorption of ambient light and providing improvement in the contrast of the image display involves the deposition of three superimposed substantially continuous window-defining layers of optical filter materials. The primary, secondary and tertiary filter layers have discretely disposed window areas formed therein to expose a pattern of filter areas representing the respective filter materials. The filter windows are of a shaping similar to that of the apertures in a spatially related pattern mask member. Each window exhibits a uniform periphery free of indentations, being so defined by a uniform opaque interstitial encompassment homogeneously made up of the three distinct layers of filter materials. Disposed over the filter windows is a patterned screen of cathodoluminescent phosphor elements, which upon electron excitation produces color emissions that are colormetrically related to the respective filter windows therebeneath.
