A screwdriver for driving collated screws including a slide body coupled to a housing for reciprocal displacement in a cycle including a retraction stroke and an extension stroke. A lever pivotably mounted to the slide body carries at one end a cam pin received in a cam slot in the housing with the other end of the lever advancing successive screws in the screwstrip, the cam slot having first and second camming surfaces for selective engagement by the cam pin to vary the relative positionning of the lever to be different for the same position if the slide body in the housing in the retraction strokes than in the extension stroke.

A curved screwstrip comprising in combination a plastic holding strap and a plurality of threaded fasteners. The plastic holding strap has a greater mass in its top half than in its bottom half so that shrinking after extrusion will tend to have the holding strap adopt a preferred curved configuration.

A novel workpiece engaging nose body for holding a screwstrip having screws held in a strap is provided. The workpiece engaging nose body includes a nose portion and a rear portion with the nose portion slidably mounted on the rear portion for movement rearwardly when the nose is urged into a workpiece to drive a screw. An exitway is defined between the nose portion and rear portion through which spent strap from which screws have been driven exit the nose body. On urging the nose body into the workpiece, the nose portion slides rearwardly to engage the strap in the exitway and move it rearwardly into engagement with the rear portion in the exitway. The strap is preferably 'pinched' in the exitway between the nose portion and rear portion to assist in locating a screw to be driven from the nose body.

A plastic screwstrip has a holding strip carrying a plurality of screws in a side-by-side relation as adapted for feeding, into an autofeed screwdriver. To assist in identifying which of two distal ends of the screwstrip are to be fed into the screwdriver and to assist in guiding the entry of the holding strip therein, a guide section of the holding strip forward of the first screw to be driven is provided at its front lead end with an arrow shaped forwardmost portion.

A nosepiece for fastener driving tools with a contact surface for engagement with the workpiece with a rounded profile to facilitate driving fasteners at an angle into the workpiece. Preferably, the contact surface has a first radially innermost portion of the contact surface for engagement of the workpiece when a screw is being driven substantially normal to the surface of the workpiece and a second outer portion of the contact surface radially outwardly from the innermost portion which outer portion is adopted to engage the work surface when a screw is being driven at an angle other than substantially normal to the work surface, the characteristics of the innermost portion of the contact surface and outermost portion of the contact surface varying such that the outer portion provides resistance to slippage of the nosepiece on the work surface when a screw is being driven at an angle to the normal.

A screwdriver nosepiece comprising an open-sided tubular member having a wall circumferentially about a central passageway extending therethrough and open at both ends, the passageway including: a cylindrical guideway extending about an axis and adapted to receive a screw coaxially therein for rotation and driving of the screw axially through the guideway by a driver shaft, and a screw catch groove disposed axially along the guideway cut into the wall extending radially outwardly from the guideway and opening radially inwardly into the guideway to define a catch surface on the wall within the catch groove, a slotway axially along the guideway extending radially outwardly from the guideway entirely through the wall and of sufficient circumferential extent to permit entry of a screw radially into the guideway while maintaining the screw substantially parallel the axis, the catch groove located on the wall circumferentially proximate the slotway with the catch surface directed away from the slotway.
