Method for generating an atmospheric pressure glow plasma (APG), wherein said plasma is generated in a discharge space between a plurality of electrodes. A dielectric is present on at least one of said electrodes, said dielectric having a boundary surface with said plasma enabling interactions between said plasma and said surface. Said dielectric is arranged for releasing electrons contributing to said plasma from said surface by said interactions.

The present invention relates to a method for splicing successive rolls of webmaterial to one endless web, in such way that during subsequent coating of the web, coating defects near the splices are reduced, preferably prevented. To that end at least part of the trailing edge of the splicing tape used to splice the succeeding webs, is left free of adhesive. Because of this, air, which during said coating process gets entrapped behind the splice, between the coating layer and the web, can dissipate between the adhesive-free tape edge and the underlying web surface, thus reducing or preventing the formation of air bubbles and subsequent coating defects. The possible reoccurrence of discontinuity coating defects at very high coating speeds can be reduced or prevented by subjecting the surface of the web to be coated to an electrostatic charge before applying the coating.

Apparatus for producing and sustaining a glow discharge plasma in a plasma discharge space comprising at least two oppositely spaced electrodes, means for supplying a gas or a gas mixture under atmospheric pressure conditions in the discharge space, AC power supply means for energizing the electrodes, and electric stabilisation means for stabilizing current variations in the plasma. The stabilisation means connect between the electrodes and the power supply means, and are arranged for providing a negative feedback opposed to a positive feedback of the plasma to instabilities in the plasma.

A dispersing method carried out in a liquid feeding system includes passing a dispersing medium containing an oil droplet type emulsified material at a flow rate of not less than 5 cc/cm.sup.2.min through a filter with a plurality of pores having such a size as to permit an oil droplet type emulsified material having a predetermined particle diameter to pass therethrough to reduce the size of the coarse particles of the oil droplet type emulsified material to below a predetermined particle diameter. The dispersing method is particularly suitable for use in the production of photographic layers.
