In a file management system a plurality of information processing devices are provided with files of tree structure. The information processing devices are linked through a communication line and dispersed files are utilized by a plurality of users in common. Each of the users can construct his own file without having any influence on the others. A table is provided including a column indicating the relation of links for the case where an arbitrary branch of a tree structure, included within at least one information processing device, is linked with a part of files included within another information device and a column specifying groups, for which the relation of links is valid. In a multi-window system for setting a plurality of windows on the screen for independent display in each window, a novel display control method is disclosed in which a visible region of a given window is determined from the positions and overlapped relations between the windows on the display screen, and display data is selectively applied to the visible region. The visible region is checked for crossing between an object window and another window making up a reference window on the screen, and if they cross each other, the object window is divided into subregions, while the subregion not overlapped with the reference window is regarded as a new object region, which is collated with another reference window and subdivided. This process of collation and division is repeated. A display output is thus applied sequentially to the subregions which are found to be a visible region.

A method of processing a plurality of different code systems for an information processing apparatus including an operating system, comprises a step of inputting a source program, and a compiling step of analyzing meaning of the source program to thereby create a series of instructions and data required for executing a processing equivalent to the meaning of the source program. The compiling step includes a sub-step of transforming character type constants to a first code system occupying region including a first number of bits and transforming character string constants to a second code system occupying a region including a number of bits which is equal to product of a sum of the number of characters of the character string constants plus one and multiplied with the first bit number so that character type variables designated in the source program correspond, respectively, to the region of the first bit number while a character type array corresponds to a region including a number of bits which is equal to a product resulting from multiplication of the first bit number with the number of elements of the array.

A data processing system includes a host unit and terminal equipment connected thereto. Different terminal equipment is identified on the basis of a program provided on the side of the host unit and on the basis of data transaction with the hardware of the terminals. To this end, a microprogram is transferred from the host computer to the terminals, while the result of execution of the microprogram determined on the basis of the types of the terminals and components thereof is transferred to the host computer from the terminal.
