A variable valve timing apparatus for an internal combustion engine, including: an actuator that activates a variable valve timing mechanism; a detection unit that detects a driving position of the actuator; a control unit that drive-controls the actuator, and when a predetermined execution condition is established, executes one of a first initialization process and a second initialization process that match the driving position of the actuator detected by the detection unit with an actual driving position of the actuator; and an abnormality determination unit that determines whether or not an abnormality is present in the driving position detected by the detection unit and stores an abnormality history after determining that an abnormality is present. The control unit executes the first initialization process when the abnormality history is stored and the second initialization process when the abnormality history is not stored.

Method and apparatus for controlling a variable valve system

A control device includes an engine valve and a variable valve actuation mechanism that is able to change at least one of a valve operating angle and valve lift of the engine valve. When the at least one of the valve operating angle and the valve lift is larger than or equal to a prescribed upper limit, the control device increases an operating speed of the variable valve actuation mechanism as compared with when the at least one of the valve operating angle and the valve lift is smaller than the prescribed upper limit.

Control device and control method for variable valve actuation mechanism

A control apparatus of a variable valve system includes a variable valve timing mechanism that performs variable control of the valve timing of an intake valve of an internal combustion engine, a variable operation angle mechanism that performs variable control of the operation angle of the intake valve, and a control unit that performs drive control of the variable valve timing mechanism and the variable operation angle mechanism. The control unit sets an upper guard for the operation angle according to an actual value of the valve timing, and when a target value of the valve timing is a value on the retard side of a specified determining value, the control unit reinforces the upper guard compared with when the target value of the valve timing is not a value on the retard side of the specified determining value.

Variable valve system control apparatus

A valve performance controller for use in an engine that performs ignition timing retardation control to prevent knocking. The controller variably controls valve performance of an intake valve in accordance with an operation state of the engine. The controller corrects a control target so that the compression end temperature of a combustion chamber decreases when a retardation amount of the ignition timing obtained through the retardation control is greater than a predetermined value. The correction is performed only when the engine performance degradation that would occur when the ignition timing is retarded in a state in which the control target is uncorrected is predicted to be greater than the engine performance degradation that would occur when the control target is corrected.
