A wide amorphous alloy thin strip having a width of 70 mm or above and useful as an iron core of electric power transformers, composed of Fe--Si--B--C amorphous alloy. Disclosed are an amorphous iron based alloy having excellent magnetic characteristics as well as bendability and a method of manufacturing the amorphous iron based alloy. The amorphous iron based alloy has a mean centerline Ra surface roughness of about 0.8 .mu.m or less and the formula Fe.sub.X B.sub.Y Si.sub.Z Mn.sub.a in approximate proportions wherein: 75&lt;X&lt;82 at % 7&lt;Y&lt;15 at %, 7&lt;Z&lt;17 at %, and 0.2&lt;a&lt;0.5 at %. The method of manufacturing the amorphous iron based alloy comprises quenching and solidifying a molten alloy having the formula Fe.sub.X B.sub.Y Si.sub.Z Mn.sub.a in approximate proportions wherein: 75&lt;X&lt;82 at % 7&lt;Y&lt;15 at %, 7&lt;Z&lt;17 at %, and 0.2&lt;a&lt;0.5 at %, and effecting the quenching and solidifying steps in a Co.sub.2. atmosphere containing H.sub.2 in an amount of about 1-4% by volume.

Amorphous iron based alloy and method of manufacture

Disclosed are an amorphous iron based alloy having excellent magnetic characteristics as well as bendability and a method of manufacturing the amorphous iron based alloy. The amorphous iron based alloy has a mean centerline Ra surface roughness of about 0.8 .mu.m or less and the formula Fe.sub.X B.sub.Y Si.sub.Z Mn.sub.a in approximate proportions wherein:

A pressure type automatic pouring furnace is formed with a molten metal outlet which has an opening end opening at a lower elevation than the general portion of the floor of a molten metal chamber. Preferably, the molten metal chamber communicates with a groove type induction heater section at a lower section thereof so that the molten metal in the chamber can be effectively heated. In addition, the bottom wall of the molten metal outlet is declined for a given angle, e.g. 3.degree. with respect to the horizontal plane so as to prevent the molten metal from accumulating within the outlet.

Pressure type automatic pouring furnace for casting

A method and apparatus for producing a rapidly solidified microcrystalline metallic tape. The method provides for molten metal to be continuously poured through a nozzle onto surfaces of cooling members to form a rapidly solidified metallic tape and then coiling the tape on a reel. According to this method, the metallic tape is secondarily cooled and rolled before the coiling. The apparatus includes a device for cutting out a non-steadly portion of the metallic tape, a device for measuring tape thickness, a secondary cooling member, and a device for controlling the tension of the metallic tape.
