A method of fabricating a piston for use in an automobile by welding. The head section and the skirt section of the piston are separately fabricated by casting such that these sections form the top wall portion of the piston when joined together and that the abutting surfaces of these sections form a portion of an oil circulating passage. Then, these sections are connected and welded together using an electron beam.

A valve actuating device for an internal combustion engine having a cam and a valve stem comprises a rocker arm receiving a load from the cam at one end and actuating the valve stem at the other end thereof, a hydraulic valve lifter slidably disposed in the rocker arm, a hollow rocker arm shaft pivotally supporting the rocker arm, a first fluid supply passage formed in the rocker arm shaft, a second fluid supply passage formed in the rocker arm, and an air hole formed in an upper portion of the hollow rocker arm shaft.

A variable cylinder device for internal combustion engines having a movable rocker arm and a movable rocker shaft in which an oil-supplying type lash adjuster is fitted to a housing having a main oil-passage and the rocker shaft is secured to a rocker support. Oil for lubricating the sliding surface of movable rocker shaft is supplied from the main oil-passage through a series of passages formed in the housing and the rocker support, especially through a pipe protruding from the rocker support and slidably inserted into the housing. The housing is further provided with a mechanism for reducing the oil-pressure in the main oil-passage and a mechanism for preventing rotation of the rocker support.

Variable cylinder device for internal combustion engines

The hydraulic lifter system for variable cylinder engines comprises a hydraulic lifter which is operatively connected to a rocker arm and which includes a body having a pressure chamber and a reservoir chamber, a plunger slidably positioned within the body, and a check valve to allow the fluid flow only into the pressure chamber from the reservoir chamber, a solenoid valve positioned by the side of the hydraulic lifter, means for causing the check valve to open to thereby establish the fluid communication between the pressure and reservoir chambers by means of the solenoid valve, and a stopper member for locking the plunger to stop the operation of the hydraulic lifter in association with the means for causing the check valve to urge to open.

Hydraulic lifter system for variable cylinder engines

A variable cylinder device for internal combustion engines comprising an adjuster coupled to a rocker arm of an intake or exhaust valve lift mechanism so as to define a first rocking point of said rocker arm, the lash adjuster having a check ball which is pushed by the operation of a solenoid valve when the engine load is reduced to a small order, as the result of which the rocking point of the rocking arm shifts from the first rocking point to a second rocking point wherein the intake or exhaust valve maintains the closed position.

An hydraulic lash adjuster of the type used in the valve trains of internal combustion engines in order to take up the lash for operating clearance includes a cylindrical body member, a plunger member having a reservoir chamber therein being slidably mounted in the body member to define a pressure chamber therebetween, passage means between the reservoir chamber and the pressure chamber controlled by a one-way valve and a floating member disposed on the surface of the hydraulic fluid contained in said reservoir chamber to prevent air from being absorbed into the hydraulic fluid during the operation of the engine.

A self-contained hydraulic lash adjuster of the type having a hollow cylindrical plunger slidably and sealingly disposed in a hollow cylindrical body, a reservoir chamber in the plunger, a pressure chamber between the bottom of the plunger and the bottom of the body and a one-way valve controlled passage between said chambers is further provided with a second plunger slidably and sealingly disposed in the reservoir chamber on the upper surface of the hydraulic working fluid therein.

Self-contained hydraulic lash adjuster

A hydraulic fulcrum lifting device for a valve actuating mechanism of an internal combustion engine in which the reservoir formed in the plunger is provided with a deflector encircling a port between the reservoir and a pressure chamber. The deflector functions to prevent air in the reservoir from being drawn through the port to the pressure chamber.
