This invention provides a polyester and a polyester molded product, which, while maintaining color tone, transparency, and thermal stability, can realize a high polycondensation rate, are less likely to cause the production of polycondensation catalyst-derived undesired materials, and can simultaneously meet both quality and cost effectiveness requirements, which can exhibit the characteristic features, for example, in the fields of ultrafine fibers, high transparent films for optical use, or ultrahigh transparent molded products. These advantages can be realized by using, in the production of a polyester in the presence of an aluminum compound-containing polyester polycondensation catalyst, an aluminum compound having an absorbance of not more than 0.0132 as measured in the form of an aqueous aluminum compound solution, prepared by dissolving the aluminum compound in pure water to give a concentration of 2.7 g/liter in terms of the amount of aluminum element, under conditions of cell length 1 cm and wavelength 680 nm.

A polymerization catalyst for polyester production which contains neither a germanium compound nor an antimony compound as a major component. It contains aluminum as the main metallic ingredient, has excellent catalytic activity, and gives a polyester which is effectively inhibited from suffering thermal degradation, during melt molding, without deactivating or removing the catalyst, and is excellent in thermal stability, stability to thermal oxidation, and hydrolytic resistance. The polymerization catalyst contains as a first metallic ingredient at least one member selected among aluminum and compounds thereof and further contains a phosphorus compound represented by a specific chemical formula. The polyester produced with this catalyst is usable as fibers, films, sheets, various moldings including hollow moldings, etc.

Electrically conductive conjugate fibers having a diameter less than 50 fm. The fibers include a thermoplastic sheath and a low-melting metal core, with the core occupying 0.2 to 50% of the sectional area of the fiber. The sectional area of the core varies by less than 25% in the longitudinal direction, and the total length of the discontinuous portions of the core is 5 cm or less per meter. The fibers can be produced with a conjugate spinning nozzle. The low-melting metal is provided to the nozzle from a closed fusion tank located at a position below the spinning nozzle. The metal is supplied to the spinning nozzle by means of pressure from inert gas, which is supplied to an upper space of the fusion tank. The level of metal in the fusion tank is maintained substantially constant, and the pressure of the gas is controlled so as to maintain a pressure variation of 0.1 kg/cm.sup.2 or less.

An antistatic fiber obtained by melt spinning of a fiber-forming thermoplastic polymer containing at least one of polyoxyalkylene glycol and its derivatives in an amount of not less than 0.5% by weight, characterized in that said fiber has a half life time of electric charge leakage of not more than 150 seconds before and after treatment with a weight decreasing agent and, when treated with a weight decreasing agent, provides a number of streaks arranged in parallel in the lengthwise direction at the surface.
