A cooling device includes a circulation channel through which a refrigerant is circulated, a heat receiving part which is disposed in the circulation channel and in which the refrigerant receives heat generated by a heat generating component, a heat dissipating part which is disposed in the circulation channel and in which the refrigerant dissipates the heat received in the heat receiving part, a pump which is disposed in the circulation channel and which sends the refrigerant to the heat receiving part, and a tank which is coupled to the circulation channel and which has a space therein, wherein the tank is disposed at a higher position in a vertical direction than the pump in a state where the pump is located on an upper side in the vertical direction with respect to the heat receiving part and the heat dissipating part.

A cooling unit includes a radiator, a rigid supply pipe connected to the radiator, and a refrigerant that is air-cooled by the radiator flows, a plurality of open nozzles provided at the supply pipe to correspond to the respective plurality of heat-generating components, a plurality of heat receiving units that are mounted to the respective plurality of heat-generating components and connected to the respective open nozzles, and allow a refrigerant supplied from the open nozzles to flow through internal channels, and a plurality of return pipes each of which is provided for each of the heat receiving units and joined to the heat receiving unit, and returns the refrigerant discharged from the heat receiving unit to the radiator, wherein the respective heat receiving units are connected to the supply pipe to be relatively displaceable, and the respective return pipes are connected to one another in series and relatively displaceably.

A magnetic recording medium used for the thermally assisted magnetic recording system which fires a laser beam at a magnetic recording medium to partially heat the medium and applies a magnetic field from the outside to the part heated to lower the coercivity for recording. The magnetic recording medium is configured by a glass substrate on which a heat radiation layer, heat retention layer, intermediate layer, and recording layer are stacked. Further, the heat retention layer is configured by a member having an effective refractive index lower than the effective refractive index of the recording layer and having an temperature diffusion coefficient determined by the specific heat, density, and heat conductivity rate higher than glass and lower than metal. The material with a high temperature diffusion coefficient is used lowered in temperature diffusion coefficient using a porous structure or granular structure.

A near-field light emitting device includes a deflecting unit that deflects electromagnetic waves propagated through a core toward a base. A propagating unit arranged on the base emits near-field light from an outlet. By providing a magnetic head on a side opposite to the base, a distance between the magnetic head and an intensity center of the near-field light can be minimized. The deflecting unit is formed comparatively thick, therefore, the electromagnetic wave is caused to enter the propagating unit at such an angle that causes a surface-propagating wave to be generated highly efficiently.

A multilayer optical recording medium including a first recording layer for recording or reproducing information by using a first light beam having a center wavelength &#x3bb;1, a first photochromic layer provided on the first recording layer, and a first optical waveguide layer provided on the first photochromic layer for guiding to the first photochromic layer a second light beam having a center wavelength &#x3bb;2 different from the center wavelength &#x3bb;1. The multilayer optical recording medium further includes a second recording layer provided on the first optical waveguide layer for recording or reproducing information by using the first light beam, a second photochromic layer provided on the second recording layer, and a second optical waveguide layer provided on the second photochromic layer for guiding the second light beam to the second photochromic layer. The first and second photochromic layers become transparent to the first light beam by irradiation with light or by application of heat. The reflectance of each of the first and second photochromic layers to the first light beam can be repeatedly increased by irradiation with the second light beam and can be repeatedly decrease to restore the transparent state.

An optical head has a first propagation section made of a first low extinction material and installed along an optical axis, a pair of second propagation sections which, being made of a second low extinction material, sandwich the first propagation section, a pair of first confining sections which, being made of a material with propagation capability lower than that of the second propagation sections, further sandwich the first propagation section and second propagation sections from outside the second propagation sections, and a pair of third propagation sections which, being made of a material with light propagation capability higher than that of the first confining sections, further sandwich the first confining sections from outside. A light irradiation head of the present invention includes: a propagation body having a tapered two dimensional shape axially symmetrical to a predetermined symmetrical axis, and consisting of a first kind material that propagates electromagnetic fields of light; and a covering body covering the propagation body so as to surround the symmetrical axis, and consisting of a second kind material different from the first kind material. The propagation body further includes: a bottom edge of projecting shape or recessed shape which is present on the symmetrical axis and which is axially symmetrical to the symmetrical axis; a tip edge which is present on the symmetrical axis and which is narrow relative to the bottom edge; and a pair of reflective edges which are present on both sides of the symmetrical axis and whose interval is gradually reduced in the direction from the bottom edge side to the tip edge side.

A light reflection unit reflects the light beam, emitted by the light emission unit, to a predetermined direction. A substrate has photodetecting elements disposed thereon, the photodetecting elements detecting a reflected light beam from a storage medium. The emission layer of the light emission unit is slanted to a central axis of the substrate, and the light emission unit and the light reflection unit are disposed on the substrate such that one of a change of a distribution of intensity of the reflected light beam from the light reflection unit and a change of a direction of polarization of the reflected light beam, caused by the slanted emission layer, is corrected.

The present invention provides a light emitting head which has high utilization efficiency of light and facilitates alignment with other heads and which facilitates fabrication, information storage device which provides high volume access to information with such a light emitting head, and composite head manufacturing method suitable to fabricate a composite head having such a light emitting head. The light emitting head includes: a first structure section including a first well propagating section consisting of a low extinction material with substantially negligible attenuation of light, a second well propagating section consisting of another low extinction material with substantially negligible attenuation of light, and whose refractive index is larger than that of the first well propagating section, and a poor propagating section consisting of a material with a propagating characteristics poorer than the second well propagating section; and a second structure section concentrating light on the first structure section.
