A manufacturing process of an LCD device of the invention includes forming a first substrate provided with a pixel part with thin film transistors and a seal portion arranged around the pixel part, forming a second substrate opposed to the first substrate, filling a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate, and adhering the first substrate to the second substrate with a sealant provided for the seal portion, wherein the forming the first substrate includes forming a semiconductor layer composing the thin film transistor, forming in the seal portion a semiconductor connection layer made of a same material as the semiconductor layer, and forming an organic interlayer insulating film, wherein the forming the semiconductor layer and the forming the semiconductor connection layer are performed in the same step.

Liquid crystal display device and method of fabricating the same

A semi-transmissive type liquid-crystal display device makes it possible to easily optimize both the reflection characteristic (reflection mode) and the transmission characteristic (transmission mode) while keeping a high aperture ratio, thereby improving the display quality. A liquid crystal layer is disposed between first and second substrates. Switching elements are formed on the first substrate for respective pixel regions. Each of the pixel regions is divided into a transmission region and a reflection region. An interlayer insulating film is formed to cover the switching elements on the first substrate. In the transmission region, a transmission electrode is formed on the interlayer insulating film. In the reflection region, a reflection electrode is formed on the interlayer insulating film. The surface of the interlayer insulating film is partially removed, thereby forming a level difference between the transmission and reflection regions.

Semi-transmissive type liquid-crystal display device and method of fabricating the same

A reflection electrode has an undulated shape and whose normal direction is distributed unevenly to a specific azimuth angle and whose reflection light intensity depends on said azimuth angle. Openings are formed in that area of the reflection electrode which has a tilt angle of 0 degree to 2 degrees and/or a tilt angle of 10 degrees or higher. The retardation of a liquid crystal layer is changed by making the liquid crystal molecular alignment mode different between the openings and the reflection electrode, so that the intensity of output light is increased in reflection mode as well as in transmission mode. The balance of colors displayed in transmission mode is determined by determining the area of the openings in pixels of each color, and the color temperature is set higher in transmission mode than in reflection mode. This provides a semi-transmission type liquid crystal display which has an excellent visibility in reflection mode as well as in transmission mode.

A reflector for a reflection-type LCD device is provided, which reflects efficiently incident light to the viewer's side and that suppresses the change of color tone. The reflector comprises a roughened surface having a protrusion pattern. The protrusion pattern gives inclination angle to the surface according to a specific distribution where a first component with an inclination angle value of 0&#xb0; is 15% or less in area and a second component with an inclination angle value from 2&#xb0; to 10&#xb0; is 50% or greater in area. The protrusion pattern gives a variation range of chromaticity coordinates (x, y) on a chromaticity diagram dependent on an angle of view. The variation range is limited in a circle on the chromaticity diagram. The circle has a radius of approximately 0.05 and a center at a point corresponding to white color.

Reflector and reflection-type LCD device using the same

In order to improve processing steps of fabricating an active-matrix addressed reflective liquid crystal display, a lower substrate, which is positioned at one side with respect to a liquid crystal layer, is provided with two electrodes in parallel with each other and in parallel with the liquid crystal layer. One of the two electrodes is electrically coupled to a source electrode of a switching element assigned to one pixel, and the other electrode is electrically couple to a constant potential source. Each of the two electrodes has characteristics of light reflectivity, which is able to reduce the intensity of exposing light when an insulating layer provided above the electrodes is patterned.

An image sensor is provided, which prevents effectively the break or disconnection of transparent electrodes of photodiodes and which enhances its sensitivity. This sensor is comprised of (a) a transparent substrate; (b) a first dielectric layer formed over the substrate; (c) lower electrodes arranged at intervals on the first dielectric layer; (d) a patterned semiconductor layer formed on the first dielectric layer to overlap with the respective lower electrodes; (e) transparent upper electrodes formed on the semiconductor layer to overlap with the respective lower electrodes; (f) a second dielectric layer formed to cover the upper electrodes, the semiconductor layer, and the lower electrodes; and (g) a patterned signal line layer formed on the second dielectric layer; the signal line layer being electrically connected in common to the respective upper electrodes at the overlap parts of the semiconductor layer by way of contact holes of the second dielectric layer. The patterned semiconductor layer has island-shaped pixel parts defining pixel areas of the sensor for receiving incident light through the upper electrodes, overlap parts overlapping with the signal line layer, and interconnection parts interconnecting the pixel parts with the overlap parts. The upper electrodes, the pixel parts, and the lower electrodes constitute photodiodes.
