In a device for controlling idling stop of an engine in which the idling stop is carried out when a temperature of the engine that is about to be stopped by the idling stop is higher than a threshold value, when the start improvement device does not function normally, the idling stop is prohibited regardless of engine temperature. Thus, the problem in which the engine cannot be restarted satisfactorily does not occur.

An internal combustion engine includes a low-pressure fuel feed system that feeds low-pressure fuel pressurized by a feed pump to first delivery pipes through a low-pressure fuel feed pipe, first injectors capable of injecting the low-pressure fuel into intake ports, a high-pressure fuel feed system that feeds high-pressure fuel pressurized by a high-pressure pump to second delivery pipes through a high-pressure fuel feed pipe, and second injectors capable of injecting the high-pressure fuel into combustion chambers. A bypass passage communicates the first delivery pipe with the second delivery pipe, and a check valve is provided in the bypass pipe for preventing flow of the fuel from the second delivery pipe to the first delivery pipe. Thus, transmission of fuel pressure pulsation caused by driving of the high-pressure pump is effectively restricted, so that an appropriate amount of fuel can be supplied to the engine for improved control of the air/fuel ratio.

A direct injection spark ignition internal combustion engine including a controller that controls a fuel injector to perform a plurality of fuel injections to inject a necessary amount of fuel during an intake stroke, or from an intake stroke to a first half of a compression stroke, when homogeneous combustion is to be performed. The fuel injection control sets an injection prohibition period, in which injection of the fuel is prohibited, to a middle of the intake stroke. The injection prohibition period is decreased as the engine speed and as the intake air pressure increase. In addition, the amount of fuel injected before the injection prohibition period is reduced, and the amount of fuel injected after the injection prohibition period is increased, as the engine speed decreases.

A start control apparatus of an internal combustion engine comprises an ignition device for igniting an air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, a start demanding device for demanding a start of the internal combustion engine, a starting device for starting the internal combustion engine, a determining device for determining a possibility of a self-ignition of the internal combustion engine at a time when a start demand is issued from the start demanding device, and a start procedure control device for igniting the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber by the ignition device after the start demand from the start demanding device in the case where the determining device determines that the possibility of the self-ignition of the internal combustion engine is higher than a predetermined level, thereafter starting the internal combustion engine by the starting device.

The engine comprises a spark plug, a cavity formed in the top surface of a piston, and a fuel injection valve for injecting fuel into the cavity in nearly the shape of a fan having a relatively small thickness. When the fuel injected in nearly the shape of a fan from the fuel injection valve is considered by being divided into a plurality of fuel segments in a radial direction, a side wall of the cavity has a first fuel deflection passageand a second fuel deflection passagefor so deflecting at least two of the plurality of fuel segments as to pass near the spark plug. The side wall of the cavity is at least partly provided with a return portionthat protrudes toward the inside of the cavity. The first fuel deflection passage is not provided with the return portionor is provided with the return portion having a short protrusion, and the second fuel deflection passage is provided with the return portionhaving a long protrusion.

A direct cylinder injection-type spark ignition internal combustion engine is disclosed. The engine comprises a spark plug, a cavity formed in the top surface of a piston, and a fuel injection valve for injecting fuel into the cavity in nearly the shape of a fan having a relatively small thickness. When the fuel injected in nearly the shape of a fan from the fuel injection valve is considered by being divided into a plurality of fuel segments in a radial direction, a side wall of the cavity has a first fuel deflection passage and a second fuel deflection passage for so deflecting at least two of the plurality of fuel segments as to pass near the spark plug. In a direct fuel injection-type spark ignition internal combustion engine including a spark plug and a fuel injector for injecting fuel directly into the cylinder, the engine can carry out stratified charge combustion by the fuel injection in the compression stroke and uniform charge combustion by the fuel injection in the intake stroke. The engine includes a mechanism which can make a tumbling stream formed in the cylinder in the intake stroke in the stratified charge combustion weaker than that in the uniform charge combustion.

A direct fuel injection, spark-ignition internal combustion engine wherein fuel mainly proceeds toward a spark plug side wall of a cavity along a bottom wall, is deflected by the spark plug side wall and is led to the vicinity of a spark plug. In the engine, the spark plug side wall of the cavity is provided with a deflecting portion inclined toward the inside of the cavity. A first part of the deflecting portion provided on both sides of the spark plug side wall functions to lead the fuel to the vicinity of the spark plug. A second part of the deflecting portion on the central portion of the spark plug side wall functions to lead the fuel to a region neighboring the side of the fuel injection valve from the vicinity of the spark plug.

A direct fuel injection-type spark-ignition internal combustion engine is disclosed. The engine comprises a spark plug, a fuel injector and a cavity formed on the top surface of the piston. The cavity has a bottom wall, a spark plug side wall and a fuel injector side wall. The fuel injector injects fuel toward the bottom wall of the cavity in stratified charge combustion. The fuel mainly proceeds toward the spark plug side wall of the cavity along the bottom wall, is deflected by the spark plug side wall and is led to the vicinity of the spark plug. In the engine, the fuel injector side wall of the cavity is provided with a deflecting portion. If a part of the injected fuel proceeds toward the fuel injector side wall along the bottom wall of the cavity, that part of the fuel is led to the vicinity of the spark plug by the deflecting portion.

A direct fuel injection-type spark ignition internal combustion engine is disclosed. The engine comprises a spark plug arranged in the upper wall of the cylinder, a fuel injector for directly injecting fuel into the cylinder, and a cavity formed in the top surface of the piston. The cavity has a bottom wall and a spark plug side wall. Fuel injected into the cavity from the fuel injector in the latter half of the compression stroke proceeds on the bottom wall of the cavity so as to be deflected by the spark plug side wall and led to the vicinity of the spark plug. In the engine, the fuel injector injects fuel in the shape of a fan having a relatively small thickness. The cavity has guide walls for preventing fuel from excessively spreading in the direction of width of the fan shape as it proceeds on the bottom wall.

The internal combustion engine comprises a spark plug,, a cavity,formed in the top surface of the piston, and a fuel injection valve,for injecting fuel into said cavity in nearly the shape of a fan having a relative small thickness. A side wall,of the cavity opposed to the fuel injection valve for leading the fuel to the vicinity of the spark plug, has a horizontal arcuate shape which is nearly symmetrical to a first vertical plane (N,). The first vertical plane is separated away from a vertical center plane (Nc) at the center of the fuel and is nearly parallel with the vertical center plane.
