Method for the controlled pre-rolling of thin slabs (20) leaving a continuous casting plant, whereby the pre-rolling is carried out with a plurality of pairs of rolls (14-16), a first pre-rolling assembly (10) being positioned immediately downstream of foot rolls (12) of a mold (11), at least one displaceable roll (16) being included in the pairs of rolls (14-16), the pairs of rolls (14-16) being associated with pressure transducer (18) and hydraulic capsule (17), position transducer (24) being included. The pressure transducer (18) and position transducer (24) can be associated with a data processing unit (21), at least the first of the pairs of rolls (14-16) processing a slab (20) which has just emerged from the mold (11) with a thin solidified skin. The method achieves a pre-rolling with a reduction of the thickness of the slab (20) leaving the last pair of pre-rolling rolls (14-16) by at least 10% so as to eliminate the liquid core and to bring into contact the zones in a two-phase condition in order that the central solidification structure be refined and the central separation be minimized. Device suitable to carry out the controlled pre-rolling of thin slabs according to the above method, which comprises an element (25a) to monitor the temperature of the liquid bath in a tundish, an element (25b) to monitor the temperature of a slab (20), an element (26) to monitor the speed of the slab (20) and an element (28) to monitor the inclusion of a liquid cone.

Method for the controlled pre-rolling of thin slabs (20) leaving a continuous casting plant, whereby the pre-rolling is carried out with a plurality of pairs of rolls (14-16) grouped together in one or more pre-rolling assemblies (10), the first of the pre-rolling assemblies (10) being positioned immediately downstream of foot rolls (12) of a mold (11), at least one displaceable roll (16) being included in the pairs of rolls (14-16), the pairs of rolls (14-16) being associated with pressure transducer means (18) and hydraulic capsule means (17), position transducer means (24) being included. The pressure transducer means (18) and position transducer means (24) can be associated with a data processing unit (21), at least the first of the pairs of rolls (14-16) processing a slab (20) which has just emerged from the mold (11) with a thin solidified skin. Multipurpose mould (10) which cooperates with a discharge roller conveyor (13) having a first removable segment (14) and which can cooperate with an electromagnetic stirrer (21) and also can form part of a plurality of casting lines. The mould (10) includes one or more level control systems (24-25) to control the level of liquid metal, a crystallizer (16) , a jacket (18) defining an interspace (50) for the accelerated flow of a cooling fluid, an outer sidewall (19) to form at least one chamber (17) and a closure bottom (22). The outer sidewall (19) has at least in its second lower part a substantially circular enclosure (20) for the external lodgement of the electromagnetic stirrer (21) supported and positioned on the closure bottom (22). The closure bottom (22) has at its lower end positioner (34) mating with positioning guide-block supports (36) included substantially above the first removable segment (14). The closure bottom (22) includes in its lower portion an attachment (41) cooperating with connection means (55) provided substantially above the first removable segment (14).

Also set forth, an ingot mould (10) for the continuous casting of thin slabs, in which the dimensional ratio between the short side (11) and the long side (12) of the mould is between 1:10 and 1:100, the mould (10) employing the above method, at least one of the long sides (12) having an outline that includes a substantially continuous enlargement of the section of the mould, starting from one of the short sides (11).

Integrated plant (10) to convert a metallic charge continuously into semi-finished products such as billets, blooms, slabs, bars or ingots, which comprises in close cooperation a chamber (14) to pre-heat a controlled metallic charge, the chamber (14) including a burner (15) and a terminal feeder (16) feeding an electric furnace (17) with a controlled flow, and comprises also the electric furnace (17), a continuously functioning transformer (26), a multifunction manipulator (20) with two independent arms able to rotate circumferentially and to move vertically to handle two ladles (18) at one and the same time at least between a tapping station of the electric furnace (17) and a casting and tapping station (21), and at least one casting and tapping station (21) served by a tundish feeding liquid metal continuously, a station to refine the liquid metal in the ladle (18) being located between the tapping station of the furnace (17) and the tapping and casting station (21). Smelting method obtained with the plant (10) of the claims hereinbefore, which feeds molten metal continuously at least to one casting statio (21) by means of two ladles (18) feeding a tundish alternately and starts with a pre-set and variable metallic charge, such metallic charge being fed continuously in the opposite direction to heating means in a pre-heating chamber (14), such charge feeding continuously with an adjustable flow an electric furnace (17) when liquid metal is tapped regularly and partially into ladles (18) able to move along a circumference, in which method the liquid metal is treated and refined in the ladle (18) before being delivered by one of the ladles (18) alternately into a tundish which transfers it continuously to the casting station (21) while the other ladle (18) is engaged in succession in operations of preparation, charging and refining, the cycle proceeding continuously without operating interference.

This invention concerns a billet launching device in continuous casting machines of the type employed to withdraw and pull the billet from the ingot mould along the casting line, whereby the device comprises, near the outlet of the ingot mould, gripping means cooperating at least momentarily with a launching element able to engage and pull the billet at least momentarily, and whereby the launching element is inserted momentarily into the ingot mould and engages the billet.

Device for regulating a tundish stopper

A process and apparatus for the continuous shearing of billets or bars of various shapes and sizes produced in a continuous casting plant wherein the shearing device moves in harmony with the billets is described. According to the process and as permitted by the apparatus, a first blade preferably the upper blade is caused to approach a billet and rest on it by means of hydraulic pressure working on cylinder/piston means, and thereafter a second blade positioned opposite the first blade is caused to move from supporting brackets to approach the billet and thereafter the blade caused to continue its course and cut into and shear the billet with the shears being supported substantially only by the billet during the shearing process. The device is relatively simple in design and is highly efficient.
