To provide a composite that can find application to various uses in a wide spectrum of fields, for example, sealing members, such as a joint sheet, a gasket and a packing, for use in junction portions, etc. of pipings of power plant and chemical plant, radiation sheets, electromagnetic wave shielding members, soundproof sheets, etc., and provide a process for producing the composite; a gasket or packing based on the composite and a clay dispersion liquid used for the composite. There is provided a composite composed mainly of graphite and clay and having the structure of graphite laminated with and/or impregnated with clay. The composite is produced by subjecting an exfoliated graphite sheet or film or a molding therefrom to coating with and/or immersion in a clay dispersion liquid with clay particles dispersed therein, or by laminating together of an exfoliated graphite sheet and/or film and a sheet and/or film composed mainly of clay. Further, a gasket or packing is produced by molding the composite.

It is an object of the present invention to provide: a protein refolding column filler, which is effective for the refolding, namely, the activation of the function, of an inactive protein with an as yet unformed higher order structure produced inor the like, or a protein whose conformation has been changed due to a certain cause and which has become inactivated; and a column filled with the aforementioned column filler. The present invention provides a protein refolding column filler, which comprises zeolite with BEA structure (Zeolite Beta) that is granulated into a particle state.

The present invention provides a novel technology and a novel material having excellent pliability, gas barrier properties and water resistance, for the technical fields of packaging materials, sealing materials, electric insulating materials and the like, the present invention relates to a film of a material having a denatured clay as a main constituent thereof, wherein (1) the film comprises a denatured clay and an additive, (2) the weight ratio of the denatured clay is not less than 70% relative to total solids, (3) the film has gas barrier properties and water-vapor barrier properties, (4) the film has heat resistance, (5) the film has water resistance, (6) the film has sufficient mechanical strength to be used as a self-supporting film, and (7) the film can be formed on the surface of metals, plastics, rubber, paper and the like, and the present invention can provide a material comprising the denatured clay film in which denatured clay particles are highly oriented and which has excellent heat resistance, excellent pliability, excellent gas barrier properties, excellent water-vapor barrier properties, and high water resistance.

A method for producing a clay thin film, which is formed of clay alone or in combination with an additive and has a structure where oriented clay particles are laminated, the method including paste-making in which clay alone or in combination with an additive are dispersed in a dispersion medium formed of water, an organic solvent, or a mixed solvent of water and an organic solvent to prepare clay paste; coating in which a thin film is formed by coating the clay paste on a substrate; planarization in which the thin film is planarized; drying in which water, an organic solvent, or water and an organic solvent are removed from the thin film; and separation in which the thin film is separated from the substrate.

The present invention provides a clay film and a member thereof, having low moisture permeability and gas permeability, having mechanical strength enabling use as a self-supporting film, having high flexibility and high heat resistance, being an electrical insulator and having low thermal conductivity; a clay film comprising clay alone, clay and a small amount of a reinforcing material, or clay, a small amount of an additive and a small amount of a reinforcing material and subjected to surface treatment; a clay film comprising clay and a small amount of a reinforcing material, or clay, a small amount of an additive and a small amount of a fibrous reinforcing material, and having gas impermeability; a multilayer film comprising a fabric and clay and having a composite multilayer structure comprising a clay layer and a fabric; and, an adhesive clay film having clay for a main component thereof and a single layer or multilayer structure in which an adhesive layer is preset on the clay film.

The present invention provides a novel technology and a novel transparent material having high thermal stability, excellent pliability, surface smoothness, dimensional stability and gas barrier properties, for the technical fields of packaging materials, sealing materials and display materials, and the invention relates to an inorganic layered compound film having oriented inorganic layered compound particles, exhibiting high surface smoothness, high dimensional stability, high transparency, excellent pliability, excellent gas barrier properties and high heat resistance, that is obtained by dispersing an inorganic layered compound of high transparency and a small amount of water-soluble polymer of high transparency in water or a liquid having water as a main component thereof, to thereby obtain a homogenous dispersion containing no agglomerates, applying thereafter this dispersion onto a support having a flat and water-layered compound particles, and separating the liquid, as a dispersion medium, according to any of various solid-liquid separation methods, for example, centrifugation, filtration, vacuum drying, vacuum freeze drying, evaporation by heating or the like to thereby attain formation into a film shape, and optionally followed by methods such as drying/heating/cooling to thereby effect detachment from the support.

Transparent film

There are provided a carbon fiber reinforced prepreg of gas barrier properties comprising a sheet-like carbon fiber reinforcement and a matrix resin including therein a gas barrier layer having a clay mineral with a plate-like crystal structure unidirectionally aligned and densely laminated, and a carbon fiber reinforced plastic produced from the carbon fiber reinforced prepreg. Such prepreg is obtained by disposing a film material of gas barrier properties having a clay mineral with a plate-like crystal structure unidirectionally aligned and densely laminated, in at least one interlayer of a laminate of a carbon fiber reinforced prepreg comprising a sheet form carbon fiber reinforcement and a matrix resin; and then heating and/or pressurizing the laminate. The carbon fiber-reinforced composite material of the invention exhibits high gas barrier properties, and particularly hydrogen gas barrier properties.

The present invention provides a clay film with excellent flexibility, whose main component is natural clay or synthetic clay, and in which there is uniform orientation in the clay particle layer, and relates to a novel clay film that has enough mechanical strength to be used as a self-supporting film, and has a structure in which layers of clay particles are highly oriented, and in which the main constituent component of the clay film is mica, vermiculite, montmorillonite, iron montmorillonite, beidellite, saponite, hectorite, stevensite, or nontronite, and which has excellent flexibility, undergoes no structural change at high temperatures of 250&#xb0; C. and up to 600&#xb0; C., contains no pinholes, and has a gas permeation coefficient of less than 3.2&#xd7;10cmscmHgat room temperature for helium, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, or air.

A method for carrying out a reaction of one substance capable of being activated by a catalyst with another substance capable of reacting with said one substance activated, characterized in that the substance capable of being activated is activated by passing the substance through a diaphragm type catalyst and the reaction is thus performed in one reaction step; a method for producing an aromatic alcohol utilizing the above method; and a reaction apparatus suitable for these reactions. In the method, one substance is activated by passing through a diaphragm type catalyst and an objective reaction is carried out by using the activated substance, and the reaction can be performed in one reaction step and with safety. Moreover, the contact of the above activated substance with a compound to be reacted therewith can be freely controlled, and therefore, over-reaction can be prevented and an objective product can be produced in high yield. The method is thus markedly advantageous from an economical view point as a commercial process for producing oxygen-containing organic compounds such as an aromatic alcohol, a ketone, an aldehyde, a carboxylic acid and an epoxide.

A method of manufacturing crystalline microporous material suitable for manufacturing a variety of crystalline microporous material under mild reaction conditions and under safe working environmental conditions by using simple installation. The crystalline microporous materials obtained by the present invention may be used as adsorbent agent, catalyst or separating material. According to the characterizing features of the manufacturing method of the present invention, there are provided a method of using cation compound or amine as crystallizing modifier and using, in combination, raw material including kanemite or silicon dioxide and a further method using raw material including silicon dioxide and aluminum salt. The method includes a step of mixing these components, a solid-liquid separating step for separating produced fine particles, and a crystallizing step for crystallizing the separated solid component. The invention achieves improvement in safety, economy and so on, in comparison with the coventionally practiced hydrothermal synthesis method which requires severe reaction conditions of high-temperature, high-pressure and strong alkaline. Further, the method allows freedom in adjustment of the pore diameter and allows a higher proportion of porous structure to be maintained in a product when the material is formed into a molded product.

A process includes a step of melting aluminium alkoxide in hexylene glycol (2-methyl 2,4-pentonediol). Then, the solution is subject hydrolysis. During this, hydrolysis and dehydrating condensation of hexylene glycol is controlled by alkoxide. This is found effective for obtaining alumina having uniform porous structure with high specific surface area.

A catalyst for hydrazinolysis having high catalytic activity and long life concurrently with high thermal resistance is disclosed. The catalyst is composed of an alumina support having a substantially extended specific surface area and iridium being substantially supported thereon. The alumina support is prepared by the steps of adding aluminum alkoxide into hexyleneglycol (2-methyl-2, 4-pentanediol), heating at temperatures between 100.degree. and 200.degree. C. to form a sol, hydrolyzing the sol to a gel, and drying and calcining the gel.
