A wound electrode body is fabricated by laminating and winding positive and negative electrode sheets together with a separator therebetween for insulation. On both positive and negative electrode side ends of the wound electrode body, laminates of current-collecting foil layered portions of the electrode sheets are bent or folded f toward the outer peripheral side to be separated into two. The separated laminates and forked connector leaves are overlapped and clamped between an ultrasonic chip and an anvil. Then, they are welded. The forked connector leaves are arranged such that no opposing forked connector leaf is present in the direction of a line normal to the forked connector leaf, so that the anvil does not have to be cantilevered. This allows welding by using the ultrasonic chip and the anvil without interfering with the collector rs. As a result, the quality of welding is improved.

Battery

A plurality of projections for projection welding are formed respectively on the opposite sides of a connector. The electrode plate of the sealing member of one of two adjacent cells is bonded and connected by projection welding to a side of the connector by way of the projections, while the cell case of the other cell is bonded and connected by projection welding to the other side of the connector by way of the projections. In this way, a plurality of cells are connected in series.

Method and structure for connecting batteries

A cylindrical storage battery comprises a spirally coiled electrode plate assembly which includes positive and negative electrode plates spirally wound with a separator interposed therebetween. Upper and lower current collectors are welded to the upper and lower ends of the electrode plate assembly. The electrode plate assembly and the current collectors are housed in a metal casing, and an upper end of the casing is closed by a sealing plate. The upper current collector and the sealing plate are electrically connected through a lead terminal which is securely and reliably connected to the sealing plate. The lead terminal has one end portion formed with a hole, and this hole is fitted on a projected portion formed on a lower surface of the sealing plate. Around the portion of the lead terminal surrounding the hole is formed a projection or projections which is/are welded to the lower surface of the sealing plate.

Cylindrical storage battery

A sealed lead acid battery having a thermostat or thermal protector as a protector of battery from heat is provided, which comprises a battery container comprised of cell chambers each containing a cell element. A terminal box is provided at the end of the battery container. The battery container is provided at the end thereof with the terminal box. The thermostat or thermal protector is mounted in the terminal box to be highly sensitive to heat, thus protecting the lead acid battery from heat. In the terminal box are inserted a pair of charge and discharge terminals and the thermostat or thermal protector, so that safe positioning of the thermostat or thermal protector and good heat conduction from the cell element to the thermostat or thermal protector are secured.
