A flame retardant composition is provided containing (a) an aromatic polycarbonate resin, (b) a rubber modified graft copolymer, (c) a vinyl aromatic-unsaturated nitrile rigid copolymer, (d) a phosphate and (e) a tetrafluoroethylene polymer. The compositions contain elevated rubber loadings and/or utilize low molecular weight polycarbonate and/or low molecular weight vinyl aromatic-vinyl cyanide rigid copolymer. The composition exhibits enhanced retention of izod impact properties upon exposure to heat and humidity. The compositions are useful for making pellets which are stored and/or shipped in hot humid conditions, and which are then utilized for making molded business machine housings.

A thermoplastic resin composition contains an aromatic carbonate resin, a rubber modified graft copolymer comprising a discontinuous rubber phase dispersed in a continuous rigid thermoplastic phase, wherein at least a portion of the rigid thermoplastic phase is chemically grafted to the rubber phase, wherein the rubber phase of the copolymer is made by an aqueous emulsion polymerization in the presence of a (C.sub.30 -C.sub.108)polyacid surfactant, and a flame retarding amount of an organophosphorus flame retardant.

A process is provided for making a flame composition. The process involves (a) mechanically dry blending (i) a tetrafluoroethylene polymer, preferably in powder form, and (ii) a first thermoplastic resin, preferably a vinyl aromatic resin to form a preblend composition and (b) admixing the preblend composition with a thermoplastic resin and a flame retardant to form the thermoplastic resin. The process provides enhanced levels of falling dart impact strength in articles molded from the thermoplastic composition.

A thermoplastic composition is provided which exhibits desired levels of viscosity, dart impact strength, and flame retardancy. The composition includes respective amounts of a bulk vinyl aromatic-vinyl cyanide-rubber graft copolymer, an emulsion vinyl aromatic-vinyl cyanide-rubber graft copolymer and a flame retardant which contains an amount of a halogenated epoxy compound. The compositions are useful for making molded articles which exhibit desired levels of flame retardancy and impact strength. The thermoplastic compositions may also further contain respective amounts of non-epoxy halogenated compounds, flame retardant synergist such as antimony compounds, and drip suppressants such as fluoro polymers.
