A Li-ion and/or Li-ion polymer battery, comprised of a plurality of battery cells, each battery cell comprised of at least one cathode section, an anode section and at least one separator layer disposed between the anode section and the at least one cathode section. A first, planar metal mesh layer is disposed within the anode section, the first metal mesh layer having a coplanar tab extending beyond the separator layer to define a negative lead. A second, planar metal mesh layer is disposed within the cathode section, the second metal mesh layer having a coplanar tab extending beyond the separator layer to form a positive lead. A plurality of reinforcing bands are wrapped around the peripheral edges of the battery cells securing the battery cells together.

The plurality of separator layers including a first layer formed of a first separator material, and a second layer formed of a second separator material, wherein the second layer is compositionally and structurally different from the first layer.

Thin lithium battery with slurry cathode

An IC card comprising an electronic device and a battery within a plastic card for electrically energizing the electronic device. The battery is comprised of a monolithic electrochemical cell having a lithium-containing cathode, a carbon anode, and a porous polymer separator infused with electrolyte solution. The cell has a thickness of less than 0.7 mm. A package containing the cell formed of a sheet of flexible laminate material having at least one metal foil layer and a layer of an adhesive-like polymeric material. The battery has an overall thickness of less than 0.8 mm.

IC card with thin battery

A battery is comprised of a rigid, plastic housing defining a generally rectangular interior cavity, and an essentially flat interior surface. A battery rechargeable electric cell has a flexible outer packaging, an electrically conductive thermoset adhesive film, and is contained within the cavity. The cell is generally rectangular in shape and has a flat outer surface and two leads extending through the housing. The cell has a normal configuration when experiencing normal operating conditions, and an abnormal configuration when experiencing abnormal operating conditions. A membrane switch is disposed between the flat interior surface of the housing and the flat outer surface of the cell. The switch has at least one lead extending through the housing. The switch has a first electrical condition when the cell has the normal configuration and a second electrical condition when the cell has the abnormal configuration. The membrane switch is selected to have a predetermined operating pressure related to the battery size and shape.
