A thread control device for a flat knitting machine having a housing and at least one thread brake arranged on the housing, has a spring acting on the thread brake, a flat spring web supported at one side, and a slider movable in a recess of the housing and having a foot which slides on the spring web so that a free end of the flat spring changes a force of the spring which acts on the thread brake in correspondence with a position of the slider.

A front yarn guide element (11) of the yarn stop motion (10) has the shape of a yarn guide eye (12) formed by a wire spiral into which a yarn can be introduced from the side and deflected to all sides without danger of slipping out. The yarn guide eye (12) is provided with a supporting part (17) located so as to be longitudinally movable in the housing (18) of the yarn stop motion (10), so that the spacing of the yarn guide eye (12) from the position (B) at which the yarn stop motion (10) is secured is adjustable.

A flat-bed knitting machine has been described which is provided with needle sinkers arranged in a knitting cam system of a cam box carriage featuring several cams adjustable by means of stepping motors and having an electronic control unit, which features a storage device for controlling the stepping motors. In order to make the knitting density variable not only in the longitudinal direction, i.e. uniformly as a whole, row by row, but also in the transverse direction across the knitting with knitting machines of this type, the stepping motors are controlled by the storage device, one motor of which, in each case, is associated with a pair of needle sinkers consisting of preceding and trailing needle sinkers during the stroke of the cam box carriage and in synchronism with the individual needles.

In the yarn tension regulating device for knitting machines in which the yarn (25) runs through a yarn tension sensor (24) and a yarn brake (20) automatically adjustable in dependence upon the indication of the yarn tension sensor, there is located directly in front of the automatically adjustable yarn brake (20), in the direction of travel of the yarn, a yarn forwarding device, in particular a yarn storage feeder (13), by which the tension imparted to the yarn on its path from the yarn spool to the yarn brake is relieved. Between the yarn brake (20) and the yarn tension sensor (24), which follows it in the direction of movement of the yarn, is located a known yarn take-up (21), whereby the automatically adjustable brake (20) constitutes the yarn brake usually provided for this yarn take-up.

A flat-bed knitting machine is described which has a carriage apparatus movable along a needle bed apparatus, a front machine frame on which the needle bed apparatus is held and which includes at least one projecting part, and on each end a plurality of yarn eyes for supplying yarn to the needle bed apparatus. To make it possible to perform servicing and/or repair work on the underside, that is, in the cam area of the carriage apparatus without major effort or long stoppages, a protective cover receiving the plurality of yarn eyes is provided on one end of the needle bed apparatus, and this cover, when the machine is not in operation, is movable, along with the carriage apparatus contacting it on one side, by a predetermined displacement distance into an outer position in which the carriage apparatus is located partly on a projecting part of the front machine frame on the far side of the needle bed apparatus and there is freely accessible from below.

The yarn tensioning device for flat knitting machines has for each yarn (20) to be processed a pivotable support (23), for yarn guide members (25-31), located in the region of an end of a needle bed, preferably outside a covering panel (16) of the machine. Each pivotable support 23 has on a projecting part (23b) a yarn clamp (35) which enters the covering panel (16) through an aperture (22) and constitutes an auxiliary member during threading of the yarn. The pivotable support (23) also carries the yarn take-up (31/32) and a number of adjustment and control members of the yarn tensioning device.

A carriage 14 is reciprocable along a needle bed of a flat knitting machine and carries a needle cam. A pair of stitch cams 12 and 13 are adjustably supported by the carriage 14 and are disposed so as to trail behind the needle cam in alternate strokes of the carriage, respectively. An adjustment mechanism 11 includes a stepping motor 38 (FIG. 3) which adjusts the trailing stitch cam 12 or 13 not only at the beginning of the respective stroke but also during the course of the stroke itself, thereby enabling the stitch density to be varied within each row of the knitted article as well as from row to row.

In a fabric take-down mechanism for a flat knitting machine provided with stitch strippers, the edge of the fabric disposed in front of the stitch strippers is engaged by a plurality of take-down hooks (27) of a hook bar (28) located beneath the comb gap (13) defined by the ends of the needle beds (10 and 11). The engagement of the fabric edge is produced by a free fall of the take-down hooks (27) over a limited initial length of take-down travel (A). The take-down of the fabric by the take-down hooks (27) is effected synchronously with the movement of a succeeding take-down roller (13) in the effective area of which the edge of the fabric is carried by means of the take-down hooks (27).
