Heated bulk material, such as coke, is quenched by a liquid flowing from the top downwardly through the bulk material. During the quenching the bulk material is closed off from the atmosphere. The steam forming from the quenching liquid is carried off downwardly in parallel flow with the quenching liquid. For this purpose the amount of quenching liquid distributed over the bulk material is so measured or dosed that it participates completely in the quenching process, whereby the quenching liquid evaporates completely except for a specific residual moisture in the coke. The flow resistance which varies over the base surface of the bulk material is compensated by a carry-off resistance which is inversely proportional to the respective bulk material height. The varying of the flow resistance is due to a bulk material height which changes from one side of the quenching container to the opposite side as a result of an inclined container bottom. Additionally, the amount of quenching liquid distributed over the top surface of the bulk material is substantially proportional to the respective height of the bulk material. The quenching chamber is provided with an inclined, perforated bottom. The perforations are so dimensioned that the ratio of bulk material height to the respective open passage area of the bottom is approximately constant.

Method and apparatus for quenching heated bulk material

A method and apparatus is provided for separating tar from gases leaking from the oven door of a coke oven. At least one gas extraction device is located at a point of leakage and is connected through a collection duct to an extractor fan for sucking the gases from the door. A means is provided for spraying hot ammonia liquor into the upstream portion of the collection duct and a means is provided for introducing saturated steam into the duct downstream of the ammonia spraying means.

Method and apparatus for purifying gases leaking from coke ovens

Equipment for receiving and transporting red-hot coke, pushed out of the oven chambers of a chamber coke-oven with vertical flue, and for extracting and purifying the dust-containing gases rising from the coke. The equipment includes duct means and associated suction means for initially extracting the dust-containing gases from an extractor hood and subsequently from the container collecting the hot coke.

Gas extracting and purifying equipment

A container for loose material, in particular for hot coal, during the operation of a coke oven battery including a novel deflecting means for directing particulate matter located in the gas emanating from the loose material back into the container to reduce the flow of particulate matter out of the container to minimize air pollution. The deflecting means is in the shape of an umbrella-shaped guide plate which is adjustable relative to the container to control an annular outlet opening for the gas. In the annular opening are located settling plates to further minimize the flow of particulate matter out of the container.

Container for loose material, in particular hot coal

Equipment for exhausting gases from a collecting device including an outer collection duct having longitudinal openings covered by a flexible belt. The collecting device is shifted along said duct while lifting the belt off the collection duct. Located within the outer collection duct is a longitudinally extending arcuate member defining on its side opposite to said belt an inner collection channel for directing exhaust gases out through the collection channel while preventing contact of said exhaust gases with the belt to prevent deterioration thereof.

Duct equipment for exhausting coke gases

A filling system operating with an apparatus for loading coal into the charging hole of a coke oven has an upper feed tube, an intermediate feed tube, and a lower tube. The upper tube is connected to the apparatus and is adapted to receive coal from it. The intermediate upright tube is vertically telescopable on the upper tube and has a lower end, with a bellows-type cuff interconnecting the upper and intermediate tubes to prevent leakage from therebetween. The lower tube is pivoted and suspended on the intermediate tube and is alignable with this intermediate tube so that its lower end can sealingly engage over a charging hole in a coking oven and its upper end can sealingly engage with the lower end of the intermediate tube. The intermediate tube can be limitedly vertically displaced and the lower tube can be pivoted out from beneath the intermediate tube so that the filling system has clearance and can pass over the structure on top of the coking oven.

Arrangement for charging the coal bins of hopper cars for coke oven batteries employing a telescoping sealing device with a lead aperture for the coal, for a dust-free connection between the charging hoppers in the filling position and the weighing bunkers, thus enabling the use of pre-heated or wet coal, maintaining short charging cycles, and permitting an exact determination of the charging volume needed, based on the weight of the coal.

Apparatus for use with a coke oven having a carriageway for a quenching car along a side thereof, which apparatus comprises a hood for covering a quenching car on the carriageway, and a supporting structure which supports the hood solely from that side of the carriageway which is remote from the coke oven.
