An apparatus and a process for making semi-finished products in the form of ti metal bars having a width-gauge ratio of over 60 and a maximum sheet metal gauge tolerance of 2%. A metal profile is fed continuously and upwardly through a pool of melt material having the same composition as the metal profile so as to form a coated metal profile. The metal profile is fed at a rate which would result in a coated metal profile having a thickness of at least three times that of the uncoated metal profile. The coated metal profile is subjected to a smoothing pass between a pair of smoothing rolls when the mean temperature in the crystallized layer of the coated metal profile meets a given condition. The smoothing rolls are adjustably disposed inside a housing at a distance of 0.5 to 5 m from the melt pool surface.

The invention is directed to an immersion casting pipe for feeding molten steel from a casting vessel into a mold having wide side walls and narrow side walls for the production of flat products. The immersion casting pipe has a pipe piece which adjoins the casting vessel and expands in cross section in the direction of the narrow side walls of the mold. The pipe piece is provided with a central base member at the lower end which allows for outlet openings for the melt. For the purpose of developing an immersion outlet which allows higher slab withdrawal speed of up to 6 m/min with slabs measuring 50 to 100 mm in thickness and 600 mm to 2000 mm in width, the inner wall of the portion of the immersion casting pipe which widens in cross section forms flow channels in conjunction with the opposite wall parts of the base member. The axes of the flow channels enclose an angle .alpha. between 10.degree. and 22.degree., where the smaller angle corresponds to a distance of approximately 600 mm between the narrow side walls of the mold and the larger angle corresponds to a distance of 2000 mm or more between the narrow side walls of the mold. The distance between the wide side walls of the mold is 50 to 100 mm.

A method of continuous casting of ingots having a cross section with a high width to height or thickness ratio includes the steps of using a mold with a corresponding cross section and a casting pipe with bottom or near-bottom outlets and having laterally a minimum distance from the wall of the mold; preheating the casting pipe prior to casting to a temperature being at least approximately similar to the temperature of the metal later to be poured into the mold; initially closing the bottom outlet of the mold prior to startup; pouring molten metal into the mold for filling the mold up to a particular level while continuing heating the casting pipe; commencing withdrawal of an ingot from the mold along a curved path when the level of molten metal in the mold has reached the level of the outlet or outlets of the casting pipe.

Additives in the form of a wire-like object are introduced through a tube into the interior of molten metal bath. The wire in the tube is surrounded by a pressurized gas which prevents metal from entering the tube. Since the tube extends close to the bottom of the bath, the additives melt near that bottom and are distributed in the bath through convective flow.

The apparatus includes a parallelogram-like foldable frame, opposite corners of which carry centering rollers to position the frame between two opposite track rollers; feelers measure the distance to the latter. The frame can be hung between the tracks or can be self-propelled by a belt drive. Some of the centering rollers can be used for reeling tests of the track rollers.

The curvature of dual roller tracks is measured by centering a frame on two oppositely disposed rollers of the two tracks, and by measuring various distances and spacing parameters of the track rollers to both sides. The measurements are carried out through spindle drives and protractible feelers, all operated directly or indirectly in relation to a common reference point.
