Method and apparatus for on-site cleaning of a gear pump by coupling the gear pump outlet to the gear pump inlet and to the inlet end of the passage and which bypasses the bearing and is preferably controlled by a valve element which can block off the bypass in normal operation and be opened for a cleaning operation to increase the pressure on the side of the bearing connected to the inlet and thereby increase the velocity of the flushing stream.

A pump housing containing an inlet and an outlet and enclosing two meshing pumping gear wheels is connected through an intermediate bearing plate to a transmission housing comprising a base arrangement and enclosing two meshing auxiliary gear wheels. An end bearing plate is disposed on the side of the transmission housing which is remote from the pump housing. The two bearing plates and the transmission housing are designed to be mutually mounted with respect to one another in four relative rotational positions, each rotated by 90.degree. with respect to a primary axis of the gear pump. The pump housing and the intermediate bearing plate are designed to be mutually fastened to each other in two relative rotational positions, each rotated with respect to one another by 180.degree. about the primary axis.

A gear pump having a housing and a pump space or chamber within which there are arranged two intermeshing, fluid-conveying gears, each gear being arranged upon an associated shaft. Each shaft is provided at least at the one side of the related gear with a shaft bearing and between such shaft bearing and the gear a sliding ring packing or seal which bounds the pump space or chamber. The sliding ring packing comprises two concentric sliding rings arranged at least approximately in a common radial plane, there being formed between such sliding rings an intermediate space which can be impinged with a barrier or blocking fluid.

A gear pump of the kind in which auxiliary gearing is relied upon to produce synchronized movement between intermeshed pumping gears includes one gearwheel of the auxiliary gearing mounted on a shaft means are provided for supplying hydraulic fluid under pressure to an interface between the gearwheel and the shaft so as to allow the gearwheel to be expanded hydraulically in order to effect relative angular adjustment between the gearwheel and the shaft for locating the pumping gears at their required relative angular positions.
