A hot shearing apparatus for shearing heated round or flat section bars of light metal in billets comprises a stationary shearing ring 8 and a movable shearing ring 11. Both shearing rings are divided into shell halves 21, 22 and 31, 32, respectively, and adapted to be spread crosswise in translatory sense. This facilitates the feeding of material and improves the cutting accuracy.

A stacking device for rigid elongated goods, such as metal bars, pipes, sectional materials, and the like, comprises a stacking section, in which at least one set of rollers for conveying the goods are provided. The rollers are arranged to extend with their axes horizontally and transversely underneath the goods for supporting and conveying the same and are adapted to be driven for linear movement selectively in and opposite to the conveying direction direction of the goods by means of linear drive chains, such that all the rollers may be removed from the stacking section in order to transfer the goods onto supports arranged at the stacking section under said rollers and adapted to be raised and lowered to take over the goods into a transportation frame. Moreover, the rollers may be driven by a rotation drive chain, while the linear drive chains stand still such that in a conveying mode the roller axes are kept at rest and the rollers are rotated about their axes to convey the goods. In a stacking mode the linear drive chains are moved and the rotation drive chains are kept at rest such that the rollers are removed under free rolling along the undersurface of the goods from the stacking section.

In a system for controlling a puller assembly (3) for withdrawing an extruded section as it exits from an extruder, in which the puller assembly (3) is moved in withdrawing direction by means of a drive mechanism (9), the actual speed with which the extruded section (1) is withdrawn is sensed by means of a tachometer (34) and is delivered to a speed controller (32) for controlling the speed of the drive mechanism (9) for the puller assembly. Optimum pulling force may be adjusted by providing follower means (11, 12) between the puller assembly (3) and the drive mechanism (9), said follower means being acted on by an actuator (15) for permitting relative movement between a drive member (8) and the puller assembly. The relative movement of a follower (11) is delivered via a displacement detector (30) to the speed controller (32) as a disturbance factor.

A plant for preheating and, possibly, heat-treating bars (2) of aluminum or aluminum alloys and subsequently severing the bars (2) into slugs (10) comprises a furnace (4) for the heat treatment and preheating only, if desired, billet hot shears (7), and a quick preheating furnace (16) connected between the hot shears and the furnace. Upon selection of the operating mode of heat treatment of the bars (2), the quick preheating furnace serves as cooling apparatus providing for temperature controlled cooling and corresponding renewed heating to a predetermined billet pressing temperature when the admissible temperature is not reached. When the plant operates alone to preheat the material, the quick preheating furnace serves as preheating furnace the exhaust gases of which serve to preheat the bars (2) in the furnace (4) through an exhaust gas conduit (19). This plant permits particularly economic and flexible operation, i.e. operation which is easily adaptable to batches of different compositions of alloys or conditions of textures, exact temperature control being achieved to the desired billet pressing temperature.

A pull measuring system used in a puller for extrusion profiles being extruded out of an extruder comprises a divided puller head (14) having its parts (30,31) supported for pivoting movement with respect to each other about an axis (32) which extends transversely of the direction of pull. In operation a tie bar (39) fixed to the part (31) carrying the clamping grippers for the extrusion profiles acts in the direction of pull on a force detector (34) fixed to the other part (30) which is arranged at a cantilever (13) of a carriage. In this manner the pull prevailing in operation and being transmitted by the puller to the extrusion profiles can be sensed reliably and accurately under any operating conditions.

An apparatus for severing extruded light sectional members is characterized by a combination of cutting saw and shears arranged at a common machine frame for alternative movement into operating position in a direction transversely of the sectional members, for severing either by the cutting saw or by the shears. The advantages of cutting by a saw and shearing are combined in this combination and the joining of two severing devices in a single structure helps save not only structural components but also space.

Preheating furnace for elongated material

A method is disclosed of shearing heated metal bars to form billets, using a hot shearing apparatus. The bars are heated or kept warm in an oven upstream of the hot shearing apparatus, and the bar column normally is conveyed back into the oven after a shearing procedure. The bar length differs from an integer multiple of the billet length, and in passing over to a subsequent bar, a remnant of the preceding bar is combined with an initial piece of the subsequent bar to form a billet of the billet length prescribed. In this context the handling, above all upstream of the shearing edge is simplified in that the final section to be sheared of the first bar always is advanced beyond the shearing edge up to a predetermined length limit, the occurrence of the butt joint between the two successive bars is detected at a metering station located approximately one billet length upstream of the shearing edge, and upon detection of a butt joint, the bar column always is left in front of the shearing edge, rather than being conveyed back into the oven.

A conveying apparatus for extrusion profiles, is disclosed in particular, those formed of non-ferrous metal, such as aluminum or aluminum alloys, supplied from the runout conveyor of an extruder in a direction transversely of the longitudinal extension of the extrusion profiles to stations of further processing. The apparatus comprises transfer beams, oriented in conveying direction, which are designed for effecting lifting and lowering as well as transfer motions in and opposite to the conveying direction and preferably adapted to be driven by a common drive. The motions in question are controllable as to path length and/or sequence in time and duration, preferably in synchronism and at infinitely variable length in lifting and/or transfer direction.

A circular saw having a cantilever beam 12 which is adapted to be lifted and on which a sawing carriage including a saw blade 2 is guided for horizontal movement, comprises a sound protection hood 5 adapted to be lifted together with the cantilever beam 12. At its lower edge the sound protection hood 5 has a flexible crush-proof apron 49 which is made of a sound dampening flexible material and enters into sound-proof engagement with the table top 8 of the circular saw when the cantilever beam 12 with the sound protection hood 5 are lowered into the operating position. Hold down devices 40, 41, 42 mounted on the sound protection hood firmly hold the material 7 to be sawed on the table top 8 during the sawing process by means of strips 55, 72 which are of sound dampening material. The hold down devices are guided in parallel by a parallel guide means including racks and pinions so as to be biased 'passively' with respect to the sound protection hood 5 by means of pneumatic cylinders 43. The measures described effectively prevent undesired sound projection, particularly from the noiseful sawing process.

In a method for continuous heat treatment of separated elongated metallic material said material is conveyed stepwise through a single furnace chamber. Said furnace chamber comprises a heating section and an adjacent holding section. In the heating section the material is heated up to a treating temperature and in the holding section the material is held at the treating temperature both in an atmosphere of forced circulation of hot gas common to both furnace sections. The temperature of the circulated hot gas is automatically feedback-controlled at the location of the transition between the heating section and the holding section, the hot gas being set into forced motion in a single circulating zone and being heated up in a single heating zone with respect to the direction of passage of the material. Additionally the temperature of the material may be measured at the said location of the transition between the heating section and the holding section and the conveying movement of the material may be interrupted for the time necessary to heat up the material to the treating or holding temperature.

A puller for extrusion profiles at an extruder is disclosed including a carriage which is movable on rails along a runout conveyor for the extrusion profiles and at which a puller head with a fixed and a movable clamping jaw is arranged for pivotal movement about a vertical axis so that the puller head may be swung laterally out of the runout conveyor. The two clamping jaws extend approximately across the width of the runout conveyor, and the movable clamping jaw comprises a plurality of clamping segments which are supported at the puller head for free swinging movement about a horizontal axis and adapted to be pivoted in opening sense by a drive means. The clamping segments are provided with clamping curves of such curvature that, at all pivot positions of the clamping segments, the points of contact between the extrusion profile to be clamped and the clamping curve always lie at least approximately on a clamping straight line intersecting the horizontal pivot axis at an inclination of a desired clamping angle with respect to a line perpendicular to the runout conveyor.

A transport device in a preheating furnace for treating metallic material like bars, billets, blooms and the like of light metal, such as aluminum and its alloys, comprises a slide-in unit adapted to be pushed into and pulled out of the furnace chamber. The slide-in unit supports furnace rollers or slides for the material to be preheated. The slide-unit itself is displaceable preferably by sliding or rolling on rails. With the transport device the thermal efficiency is improved, as after charging the furnace all parts of the transport device are contained in the furnace chamber which may be in this manner completely sealed for the heat treatment of the material. Moreover, assembly and disassembly of the furnace rollers or slides is easy.
