A coupling member is disclosed for use in connecting together flexible tubes and the like. The coupling member is adapted for connection with a mating coupling member, and includes an outer rigid coupling component which is thermally resistant and an inner coupling component which is thin and flexible, so that the inner coupling component can provide a penetrable seal and whereby the overall coupling member is capable of withstanding autoclaving temperatures so that it can be sterilized prior to use. A coupling device including such a coupling member is also disclosed, including a second coupling member which is capable of mating with the first coupling member and which includes a penetrating portion so that when the two coupling members are mated, the penetrating portion of the second coupling member penetrates the inner coupling component of the first coupling member. The disclosed coupling device is primarily intended for use in connection with a treatment method known as CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis).

Coupling for the connection of flexible tubes and the like

A device is disclosed for collecting a liquid which has been separated into at least first and second fractions according to the densities of such fractions. The device comprises a stationary transferring element and a housing for said stationary transferring element. The housing is rotatable about an axis of rotation for the device and the housing and stationary transferring element provide a fluid communication space therebetween for fluid communication between the housing and stationary transferring element. The housing includes first and second outlet passages for passing said first and second separated fractions through the housing to first and second points in the fluid communication space, and the transferring element includes first and second outlet channels for passing the first and second separated fractions from the first and second points in fluid communication space through the transferring element. The first point of communication in the fluid communication space is positioned radially outwardly from the axis of rotation of the device with respect to said second point in said fluid communication space so that when the housing is rotating the separation of the first and second fractions in the fluid communication space is maintained at least partially by centrifugal force.

Transferring means for use in a device for separating liquids

A rotatable rigid disc for separating a liquid into fractions according to the densities of such fractions is disclosed. The rigid disc includes an inlet for the liquid to be separated; at least two outlets for the separated liquid fractions; and a separation chamber in the form of an elongated, curved conduit. The conduit is fluidically connected to the inlet and the outlets, the outlets are positioned on the disc radially outwardly with respect to the inlet, and the outlets are positioned along the elongated, curved conduit so as to provide a separate collection location for each outlet and so that the densest fraction is separated by the outlet nearest to the inlet and the least dense fraction is separated by the outlet most distal from the inlet.

Liquid storage device

A connection nipple for providing fluid communication with the interior of the container, such as for example a blood bag or the like. The connection nipple comprises a hollow tubular member having a first end which is adapted to be sealingly inserted within the blood bag and a second open end disposed externally of the blood bag. A circumferential rib member is provided circumferentially about the hollow tubular member intermediate the first and second ends. The circumferential rib has a cross-section which tapers substantially to a point to define a connection line about the circumference of the hollow tubular member. A releasable sealing sleeve member is integrally connected to the hollow tubular member in the vicinity of the connection line, and sealing surrounds and completely encloses the second open end of the tubular member to thereby prevent fluid communication with the interior of the blood bag through the second open end. The releasable sealing sleeve member is adapted to be disconnected from the hollow tubular member to expose the second end of the hollow tubular member by twisting of the sleeve member relative to the tubular member to cause the sleeve to break along the connection line.

Connection nipple

A connection device for connection to first and second fluid conduits for providing selective fluid communication between the two conduits. The connection device comprises a first member having first and second open ends and a fluid passageway therebetween, and a second member having a first open end and a second end with a fluid passage defined therebetween and in which the second end is disposed within the second open end of the first member. The first and second members are movable relative to one another between an open position in which the first fluid passageway in the first member and the second fluid passageway in the second member are in fluid communication with one another, and a closed position. Closure means are provided associated with the second ends of at least one of the first and second members for closing one of the first and second passageways to prevent the fluid communication therethrough between the first ends of the first and second members when the second member is in a closed position. Bias means are provided for biasing the second member towards the closed position when the second member is moved towards the open position.
