The electrolyte sensitivity of carboxyl-containing synthetic thickeners causes problems on application together with disperse dyestuffs, the commercial finish (dispersants) of which is of anionic nature. These known disadvantages can be eliminated by adding natural thickenings which are based on polysaccharides to the synthetically based products the properties of which are considered unsatisfactory, and setting a certain, acidic pH value in the thickening mixtures. Illustratively, proceeding in this manner it was found on pad-dyeing and printing, for example, polyester fibers with conventionally finished disperse dyestuffs that the use of the auxiliary combinations according to the invention not only stabilized the thickening but also brought about an increase in depth of shade. The systematic pH adjustment of the thickening mixtures results in considerable color yield gains.

The heat-transfer coloring process using sublimable disperse dyestuffs can be applied on cellulosic materials if these are treated with an aqueous preparation containing a thickening agent and an addition compound of a lower alkylene oxide onto a compound having active hydrogen atoms. If the thickener is a synthetic polymer containing carboxy group the alkylene oxide addition compound can be omitted.

According to two-phase processes multi-color effects are obtained on cellulosic materials, namely conversion effects with reactive and vat dyestuffs on the one hand and discharge resists prints with reactive dyestuffs and, optionally, vat dyestuffs on the other hand, by printing or padding the reactive dyestuff or a mixture of reactive and vat dyestuffs in a weakly acidic medium onto the material, overprinting this material with a neutral paste containing formamidine sulfinic acid as discharging agent and, if desired, a vat dyestuff, drying the print, contacting the material with an aqueous strongly alkaline liquor, steaming it and finishing the article in known manner, depending on the choice of dyestuffs.

Fast colorations can be obtained on cellulose materials with disperse dyestuffs containing ester groups when heat-fixation occurs in the presence of aliphatic alcohols, amines or aminoalcohols. Probably a transesterification and/or amide formation leading to significantly higher molecular weight of the dyestuffs are responsible for the good fastness properties of the colorations.
