The apparatus for controlling an output voltage of a generator of an internal combustion engine having a starter device, includes a charge control signaling device, an excitation coil for the generator and a voltage regulator controlling an excitation current in the excitation coil and an excitation current limiting device for limiting the excitation current during a predetermined starting phase (.DELTA.t1 ) connected to the voltage regulator. The excitation current limiting device detects whether the engine is in a starting phase. If the engine is in a starting phase, the excitation current limiting device reduces the excitation current so that a voltage is produce at generator terminal D+ which permits no load current and simultaneously guarantees that the charge control signalling device is shut off. After ending of the starting phase the excitation current limiting device is shut off and the excitation current is increased to its standard value, which results in a generator output voltage which is above the power supply voltage that charges the battery.

A generator having an exciting winding and a standard load associated with a standard exciting current in the exciting winding can be controlled by a voltage regulator which adjusts an exciting current in the exciting winding and a temperature measurement device in a predetermined location in the generator and/or a voltage regulator associated with the generator, which is connected to the voltage regulator, advantageously via a microprocessor device or a pulse duration modulation circuit connected to the final regulating stage of the voltage regulator for gating the exciting current. To provide a positive indication that a battery has been reversely connected to a self-contained electrical network, for example a vehicular or boat network, a diode (24) of low current carrying capacity is connected across the terminals (25, 26) of the network, poled in blocking direction. Upon erroneous or reverse connection of the battery (13) with reverse terminals, the diode will immediately burn out, thus providing positive identification of such a reverse connection, even if only of such short time duration that the main rectifier diodes were not yet damaged. To prevent spurious replacement of the diode and thus elimination of the indication, the diode (24) can be molded into or cemented into a depression or groove formed in the insulating support plate (28) supporting the rectifier element.

To provide a visible output indication, for example by an indicator light on a controller supervisory panel of the vehicle, of proper functioning of the voltage regulator power transistor, monitoring circuits are provided which sense the electrical condition of current flow through or the voltage condition of the field winding or output bus respectively by including a light emitting diode (LED) in an indicator circuit, for example by connecting it in series to the coupling resistor. In one form, a Zener diode Z (FIG. 1) is connected across the output bus with the LED in series, so that the LED will light if the output bus reaches a voltage which might damage the battery, for example due to short circuit or alloying-through of the output transistor T of the voltage regulator; in another form, an LED which preferably is green, LDg (FIG. 2), is connected across the output transistor, the green LED lighting if the output transistor functions properly, but extinguishing if the output transistor alloys-through; the LED with the Zener diode and the green LED can be provided together to form alternate outputs--green indicating proper operation and red already danger; in another form, an LED, preferably also green (FIG. 3) is connected across the field winding so that, if the output transistor T' should burn through, extinction of the green diode will indicate that the field no longer receives energization. Of course, the usually provided charge control lamp will then also light since the alternator will no longer furnish output, so that the combination of the green LED across the field with the charge control lamp again provides an alternate output indication, the extinction of the particular green LED pinpointing the trouble which caused the charge control lamp to light.

To facilitate assembly under mass production conditions, and to permit efficient cooling, a voltage regulator structure secured within a power transistor housing of the TO-5 shape as attached to a carrier plate which is narrower than the diameter of the housing, with a cooling sheet metal element interposed, bent over the carrier plate to be positioned within the cooling air stream of the automotive alternator, a carrier plate being preferably integral with the brush holder for the field current slip rings of the alternator. The brush holder-carrier plate combination is formed with attachment eyes on the carrier plate laterally of the voltage regulator, to attach the entire unit into an alternator and provide rugged and secure connection of the entire assembly to the remainder of the alternator structure.
