Laundry articles are spread out by input machines in front of a feed conveyor which feeds the spread-out laundry article to a mangle. The respective laundry article is previously fed by a transfer device to a draw-on device onto which the laundry article is drawn. In known input machines, relatively complicated transfer devices are provided. According to the invention, the transfer device is provided with a rectilinear conveying section ascending to the draw-on device. The laundry article is thereby transported to the draw-on device by the transfer device in the plane in which it is transferred to the transfer device. Such a transfer device needs to have only a simple set-up. Since the laundry article remains in the plane in which it is fed to the transfer device, it can be brought by the transfer device into a favorable initial position for being drawn reliably onto the draw-on device.

A method and apparatus in which laundry cakes (), formed when washed laundry articles are for the most part freed in a dewatering press of the treatment liquid bound in them giving rise to a laundry cake () consisting of coherent laundry articles, are divided from the end face () by a roller-like divider () which can be driven in rotation about a horizontal axis of rotation (), which axis of rotation () runs parallel to the end face () of the laundry cake () to be divided, and an effective division of the laundry cake () which takes care of the laundry articles is carried out.

Items of laundry have to be stretched out by a spreading device () before they are inserted into a mangle or any other laundry treatment device. To this end, the spreading device () has spreading clips () which can be moved away from one another. In the case of relatively large items of laundry, the spreading clips () have to cover a relatively large distance in order to spread out the item of laundry. This reduces the insertion rate. The invention provides for the items of laundry to be preliminarily spread out before being passed to the spreading clips (), so that the spreading clips () receive the item of laundry in a state in which it is already virtually spread out. The spreading clips () only have to cover a small residual distance in order to spread out the item of laundry completely. As a result, the spreading device () can spread out the item of laundry very quickly. It is particularly advantageous to measure the width of the item of laundry and to then preliminarily spread out the item of laundry as far as possible as a function of the measured width.

According to the invention, the items of laundry (,) are grasped successively by a gripper (,), are lifted up and taken over by a transfer means (,) which transports the respective item of laundry (,) through a gap (,). The gap (,) of the transfer means (,) ensures that only individual items of laundry (,) can be transported on further by the transfer means (,) and a force which is required for completely pulling out the respective item of laundry (,) from the pile of laundry (,) can be exerted on the item of laundry (,). As a result, reliable separating of items of laundry (,) from a pile of laundry (,) is ensured.

Device for separating items of laundry

Items of laundry (11) released from a washing machine as a pile of laundry (10) have to be separated before they can be processed further. The aim is to automate this separating procedure. Known methods for automating the separating of items of laundry (11) are still inadequate. According to the invention, the items of laundry (11) are grasped successively by a gripper (23), are lifted up and taken over by a transfer means (24) which transports the respective item of laundry (11) through a gap (29). The gap (29) of the transfer means (24) ensures that only individual items of laundry (11) can be transported on further by the transfer means (24) and a force which is required for completely pulling out the respective item of laundry (11) from the pile of laundry (10) can be exerted on the item of laundry (11). As a result, reliable separating of items of laundry (11) from a pile of laundry (10) is ensured.
