A spring element of an elastic material, in particular of synthetic plastic for taking a kinetic energy has a tubular piece, and a base plate which is fixedly connected to the tubular piece, the tubular piece having a wall thickness corresponding to a ratio between an outer diameter and an inner diameter of less than 2 and a structural height within the range of 0.7-1.3 of the outer diameter, so that during deflection with approximately 35% of an initial structural height an open end of the tubular piece is fitted over a force-loaded surface.

Spring element of elastic material

The deformable element for absorbing kinetic energy is a plastic pipe section (,) having interior surfaces at opposite ends thereof. The plastic pipe section (,) initially deforms elastically under an applied axial force (F) and, when a yield stress limit is exceeded by the applied axial force (F), the plastic pipe section (,) deforms or collapses with an approximately equal deforming force over a work stroke until adopting a physically deformed shape in which the interior surfaces at the opposite ends contact each other. The device for absorbing kinetic energy is also described including several plastic pipe sections stacked in a column with an intermediate plate between each adjacent pair of pipe sections. The plastic pipe sections and engaged around a tubular round body for support and guidance. An inner screw bolt can also be provided for pre-tensioning the plastic pipe sections.

Kinetic energy absorbing element

A spring according to this invention has a core of an elastically deformable but substantially incompressible material and having two axially spaced end surfaces operatively engageable with objects to be relatively resiliently mounted. Thus when the two bodies engaging the end surfaces move toward each other the core swells radially. An annular belt formed of an elastic synthetic resin snugly surrounds the core between its ends. The belt can be lapped or can be a single unitary ring. It may also be formed of a plurality of independent layers having ends provided with a heat-shrunk clip for securing the ends together. To soften the initial spring characteristic the belt is corrugated and has peaks engaging the core and valleys normally not engaging the core. The corrugations may run longitudinally or transversely.
