Method for producing this membrane from a casting solution comprising the hydrophobic first sulfone polymer and the hydrophilic second polymer in a solvent system, the method comprising the steps of pouring the casting solution, conditioned to a molding temperature, onto a carrier to form a film, which carrier has a temperature that is higher in comparison to the molding temperature, conveying the film through a climate-controlled zone, initiating the coagulation in a coagulation bath for the formation of a membrane structure, withdrawing the membrane structure from the carrier with a speed that is increased in comparison to the carrier speed, stabilizing, extracting, and subsequently drying the membrane.

The hollow-fiber membrane possesses on its inner surface a porous separating layer and an open-pored supporting layer adjoining the separating layer, and has an ultrafiltration rate in albumin solution of 25 to 60 ml/(h&#xb7;m&#xb7;mmHg). The hollow-fiber membrane is free from pore-stabilizing additives, and has a minimum sieving coefficient for cytochrome c of 0.8 and maximum sieving coefficient for albumin of 0.005. Method for the preparation of such membranes based on coagulation induced by a non-solvent, whereby a spinning solution of a synthetic first polymer and possibly a hydrophilic second polymer is extruded into a hollow fiber through the annular slit of a hollow-fiber die with simultaneous extrusion of a coagulation medium as the interior filler through the central opening of the hollow-fiber die, the interior filler initiating coagulation in the interior of the hollow fiber as a result of which a separating layer on the inner surface of the hollow-fiber membrane is formed as well as the membrane structure, the method being characterized in that the interior filler contains a polyelectrolyte with negative fixed charges.

Process for producing an integrally asymmetrical hydrophobic polyolefinic membrane with a sponge-like, open-pored, microporous support structure and a separation layer with a denser structure, using a thermally induced liquid-liquid phase separation process. A solution of at least one polyolefin is extruded to form a shaped object. The solvent used is one for which the demixing temperature of a solution of 25% by weight of the polyolefin in this solvent is 10 to 70&#xb0; C. above the solidification temperature. After leaving the die, the shaped object is cooled using a liquid cooling medium that does not dissolve the polymer up to the die temperature, until the phase separation and solidification of the high-polymer-content phase take place. The integrally asymmetrical membrane producible in this manner has a porosity of greater than 30% to 75% by volume, a sponge-like, open-pored, microporous support layer without macrovoids and with on average isotropic pores, and on at least one of its surfaces a separation layer with pores &#x3c;100 nm, if any. The membrane is preferably used for gas separation or gas transfer processes, in particular for oxygenation of blood.

Process for producing polyolefin membrane with integrally asymmetrical structure

The invention relates to a method for producing a hydrolytically stable polyamide membrane having an open-pored, microporous and sponge-like support-layer structure, using a process involving thermally induced liquid-liquid phase separation. A solution of an aliphatic polyamide in a solvent system, comprising preferably a solvent and a non-solvent for the polyamide, is extruded to form a shaped object. After leaving the die, the shaped object is cooled by means of a cooling medium until phase separation occurs and the polymer-rich phase solidifies to form the membrane structure. The solution of the polyamide in the solvent system contains an antioxidant agent as a stabiliser for the polyamide which, together with the solvent system, is selected in a way that the antioxidant agent is essentially insoluble in the solvent system at the phase separation temperature. The invention also relates to a polyamide membrane with improved hydrolytic stability, characterised in that it contains an antioxidant agent as a stabiliser for improving hydrolytic stability.

The invention describes hydrophilically acting shaped objects, in particular semipermeable membranes for pyrogen retention, comprising a synthetic polymer component and an additive made from a copolymer made from vinylpyrrolidone and a vinylimidazole compound, and furthermore processes for manufacturing the shaped objects. The shaped objects of the invention exhibit such a high pyrogen retention capacity that the pyrogen concentrations present in the filtrates are in part below the detection limit of the gel clot LAL test.

Process for producing integrally asymmetrical hydrophobic polyolefinic membranes with a separation layer, in particular for gas exchange, via thermally induced liquid-liquid phase separation. A solution of at least one polyolefin in a solvent system containing a compound A and a compound B is extruded to form a shaped object. Compound A is a strong solvent and compound B a weak non-solvent for the polymer. After leaving the die, the shaped object is cooled using a solid or liquid cooling medium, which does not dissolve the polymer and does not react chemically with it, until the phase separation and solidification of the high-polymer-content phase take place. The integrally asymmetrical membrane producible in this manner has a porosity of greater than 30% to 75% by volume, a sponge-like, open-pored, microporous support layer without macrovoids and on average isotropic pores, a separation layer on at least one of its surfaces with pores <100 nm, if any, and a gas separation factor &agr;(CO /N ) of at least 1. The membrane is preferably used for blood oxygenation.

A bioartificial organ for implanting to provide a therapeutic effect is prepared containing a core of living cells encapsulated in a foam-like membrane having three regions: a dense, fine-pored, permselective inner region, a middle region that lacks macrovoids and a fine-pored outer region. The membrane has a molecular weight cutoff that permits passage to nutrients to the cells but not passage of the cells. Preferably, the membrane is made of polyether sulfone, pores range in size between 0.02 .mu.m and 2.0 .mu.m and have polyhedrally symmetric boundaries and are arranged asymmetrically from one surface to the other. The membrane has an asymmetry factor AF relative to the maximum pore diameter of 0.01 to 2.0 and a ratio of the maximum mean free path length to the diameter of the largest pore of greater than 3. The membrane can be hydrophobic or hydrophilic. The bioartificial organ is formed by coextrusion or by stepwise assembly by forming the cell core and then applying the membrane. A polyether sulfone membrane is prepared from a solution containing by weight 12 to 35% polyether sulfone and 15 to 65% .epsilon.-caprolactam, and optionally 0 to 85% latent solvent, 0 to 15% thickner, to 5% non-solvent and 0 to 1% auxiliaries. Cells encapsulated can be cells that produce a neurotransmitter such as dopamine or a biologically active factor such as CNTF, NGF, GDNF, endorphins, catecholamines or enkephalins.

An integral polyether-sulfone membrane with a pore system open at the outer boundaries is in the form of flat films, tubular films or hollow fibers having a maximum pore diameter of 0.02 .mu.m to 2 .mu.m. The pore system is cellular throughout with cells having polyhedrally symmetrical boundaries. The cells are arranged asymmetrically from one surface of the membrane to the other, the asymmetry factor AF relative to the maximum pore diameter being 0.01 to 2.0. The ratio of the maximum mean free path length of the flow path to the diameter of the largest pore is greater than 3. The cell size changes steadily from one surface to the other surface. The membrane is produced by dissolving 12 to 35% by weight, relative to the total solution, of polyethersulfone in a mixture of 15 to 65% by weight of .epsilon.-caprolactam, 0 to 85% by weight of latent solvent, 0 to 15% by weight of thickener and 0 to 50% by weight of non-solvent, and if appropriate up to 1% by weight of auxiliaries, forming the solution into flat films, tubular films or hollow fibers (the latter preferably with the aid of an internal fluid), and transformation into the solid phase and removal of the mixture forming the solvent. A process produces microporous powders or shaped articles, in particular membranes in the form of flat films, tubular films or hollow fibers, which may be used for controlled release of an active compound, for dialysis, gas separation, ultrafiltration or microfiltration, from polyvinylidene fluoride and/or polyphenylene sulfide and/or polysulfone and/or polyacrylonitrile and/or ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer and/or ethylene/chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer and/or polyethersulfone and/or polyether-imide and/or polymethyl methacrylate and/or polycarbonate and/or cellulose triacetate. The process utilizes phase separation by means of thermally induced triggering or triggering induced by a non-solvent of a solution of the polymer in a mixture containing .epsilon.-caprolactam as the essential dissolving constituent. The solution may be formed before the phase separation is triggered.

Process for producing microporous powders and membranes

Porous bodies, particularly membranes in the form of hollow filaments, are produced by heating a polymer above the upper critical temperature T.sub.c in a mixture of two compounds A and B, liquid and miscible at the dissolving temperature, whereby the employed mixture (polymer, compounds A and B) in liquid aggregate state displays a miscibility gap, the compound A is a solvent for the polymer and the compound B, which preferably is a non-solvent or a swelling agent for the polymer, raises the phase separation temperature of a solution composed of the polymer and compound A. After the dissociation, the components A and/or B if necessary are extracted. Through use of non-toxic substances such as e.g. edible oil as compound A and castor oil as compound B, bodies are obtained which are non-toxic and unobjectionable for use in medical areas and in the foods industry, among others.
