A NodeB () for an HSPA enabled WCDMA network (), arranged () to transmit beam forming instructions to a User Equipment, a UE (), which is arranged for beam forming. The beam forming instructions comprise information identifying a code book with one or more code words, and the NodeB is also arranged to transmit code words from said code book to the UE at a certain rate. The NodeB is further arranged to determine said rate based on dynamically varying information available in the WCDMA network, and to receive said information on the code book from an RNC upon configuration of the UE or to choose code book based on said dynamically varying information available in the WCDMA network.

Device and method for improved closed loop diversity

The invention relates to a method for reducing interference between users in a mobile communications network () in which uplink transmissions from user equipment, UE (), to a radio base station, RBS (A,B), can be performed on at least two different carriers (C, C). The UE () support dynamic switching between CDM and TDM transmission mode and the RBS (A,B) is arranged to dynamically set the mode of transmission for the UE (). The method comprises the steps of: &#x2014;identifying (S) at least a first UE as a high data rate, HDR, UE currently requiring high data transmission rate; dedicating (S) at least one of said at least two carriers (C, C) to said HDR UE for at least a first period of time (T), said at least one carrier (C, C) hereinafter being named clean carrier, and&#x2014;allocating (S) said at least first HDR UE to said clean carrier (C, C) during said at least first period of time (T). This method ensures that no UE operating in CDM mode is transmitting on the same carrier at the same time as the HDR UE.

Method and apparatus for reducing interference in a mobile communications network

A dual mode mobile terminal () is capable of communicating (e.g., with a core network) either via a first radio access network () having a first type radio access technology (GSM) or a second radio access network () having a second type radio access technology (UTRAN). When conditions warrant, a network node prepares a radio access technology (RAT) handover message for transmission to the equipment unit (UE) in conjunction with handover of the mobile terminal (MT) from the first radio access network to the second radio access network, and an associated change of operation mode of the mobile terminal (MT) from the first mode to the second mode. In accordance with the present invention, a radio access technology handover message includes a first information element representative of a first parameter from which a value of a second parameter can be derived so that the second parameter need not be included as a separate information element in the radio access technology handover message. Not including the second parameter as a separate element in the radio access technology handover message facilitates non-segmentation of the radio access technology handover message. In one aspect of the invention, the radio access technology handover message is a RRC Handover to UTRAN message; the first parameter is a Serving-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (S-RNTI 2); and, the second parameter is an information element which facilitates distribution of load and transmission of traffic in the radio access network (e.g., a Default DPCH Offset Value).

Commanding handover between differing radio access technologies

A system and corresponding method for utilizing Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) techniques in compressed modes. In certain embodiments, radio frames on an uplink data channel are formed and transmitted to include at least one transmission gap (TG) therein in a compressed mode. This may be achieved by reducing the spreading factor (e.g., by a factor of two). In combination with reducing the spreading factor, the TG may be tailored or adjusted to its desired length (TGL) by using bit repetition (or reduction of puncturing). This enables the TG length to be tailored to a desired length, without having to increase output power more than necessary. In other embodiments of this invention, frames on an uplink control channel are formed or formatted so as to repeat format indicator (e.g., TFCI) bits therein in compressed mode. Optionally, format indicator bit(s) immediately or directly following the TG may be repeated later in the frame since these bits may sometimes suffer from slightly worse power control than other TFCI bits in the frame. Moreover, any embodiment of this invention is also applicable to downlink channel communications.

Method and apparatus for compressed mode communications over a radio interface

A method and a system for calibrating the reception and transmission of an antenna array for use in a cellular communication system is disclosed. The calibration of the reception of the antenna array is performed by injecting a single calibration signal into each of a number of receiving antenna sections, in parallel. The signals are collected after having passed receiving components that might have distorted the phase and amplitude. Correction factors are generated and applied to received signals. The calibration of the transmission of the antenna array is performed in a similar way. A system and method for improving the accuracy of a location estimation measurement within a telecommunication system is disclosed. During a cessation of transmissions by a local base transceiver system in communication with the mobile station, the mobile station communicates with other, more remote base transceiver systems and trilateration and other distance measuring techniques are employed to calculate the position of the mobile station in relation to those remote base transceiver systems. In another embodiment of the present invention, the local base transceiver system is also used to calculate the position. In still another embodiment, during a cessation of transmissions by the mobile stations in communication with a local base transceiver system, the local base transceiver system is better able to use remote mobile stations for trilateration.

System and method for positioning a mobile station in a CDMA cellular

Variable spreading factors and multi-code transmissions are flexibly accommodated by assigning spreading codes in accordance with the described techniques. Spreading codes are assigned so that the control channel is orthogonal to all physical channels in the composite spread spectrum signal. Power balance between in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) branches in the transmitter is also provided by assigning physical channels to appropriate branches and splitting physical channels, where necessary.
