This invention relates to preparation and use of a rubber/carbon black composite comprised of at least one elastomer which contains a dispersion therein of carbon black aggregates. Such carbon black is formed by preparing a pre-blend comprised of uncompacted carbon black aggregates and oil and/or aqueous latex of, preferably, a low molecular weight diene-based elastomer particles, followed by blending said pre-blend with an aqueous emulsion of diene-based elastomer particles and/or with an organic solution of a diene-based elastomer, and/or with solid diene-based elastomers, and recovery therefrom of a solid rubber/carbon black composite comprised of said diene-based elastomer, (which may include butyl rubber, EPDM rubber and thermoplastic polymers), which contains a dispersion therein of said carbon black aggregates having an apparent density significantly lower than the specific gravity of said carbon black aggregates and significantly lower than compacted carbon black aggregates. Such carbon black aggregates may be optionally in a form of silica treated carbon black which contains silica domains on its surface. A rubber composition is further provided which is comprised of said rubber/carbon black composite. An article of manufacture is also provided, such as a tire, having at least component comprised of said rubber/carbon black composite or said rubber composition.

Ultrasonic sensors can be integrated and used to monitor composites throughout their production and during their useful lifetime. In an integrated program, ultrasonic sensors, in the illustrated embodiment contact sensors, can be used for quality control on raw rubber used for making a composite and for monitoring the cure of the rubber as it is transformed into a useful product, and non-contact sensors can be used to evaluate the product when it is completed, and to monitor its aging and wear during use. Such sensors can also be used in research to evaluate potential raw materials, and to compare cured candidate materials for properties useful in a completed product.

Method for ultrasonic monitoring and evaluating of composites

The invention relates to a tire having at least one component comprised of a rubber composition which contains pre-hydrophobated precipitated silica aggregates. Such tire component may be, for example although not limited to, a tire tread, sidewalls and/or sidewall insert. Such pre-hydrophobated precipitated silica aggregates are contemplated as being prepared, for example, by treatment of a colloidal silica with a combination of both an organomercaptosilane and an alkylsilane.

An aqueous coating composition which can be applied to a cured rubber surface, such as the white sidewall, colored sidewall, raised white lettering or raised colored lettering of a tire, to provide a protective coating against staining and scuffing. The composition includes (a) polyvinyl alcohol, (b) ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, and (c) one or both of (i) a silicon emulsion in an amount sufficient to provide increased scuff resistance to a coating prepared from the composition, and (ii) a thickening agent of a type and in an amount effective to render the composition shear-thinning.

The invention relates to an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl acetate-based composition which can be applied to a cured rubber surface, such as the white sidewall of a tire, to provide a protective coating against staining and scuffing. Preferably, the aqueous composition includes a polysiloxane agent for increasing the scuff resistance and high humidity resistance.

A method of making silica loaded elastomer masterbatches or compounded productive elastomer stocks with or without the simultaneous extrusion of component profiles is provided. A twin-screw extruder is used to mix the elastomeric stock in multiple mixing zones at controlled temperatures in which a concurrent chemical reaction takes place between the silica coupler, the silica, and/or the diene based elastomer. Silica, elastomer, silica coupler, and other ingredients are fed into the twin screw extruder continuously through precise loss-in-weight or volumetric feeders. Chemical reactions(s) in the elastomer/silica based composition take place within the twin-screw extruder while the composition is mixing. The product is forced through a profile die mounted at the exit of the extruder and formed into the shape of the desired component. The maximum rate of mixing tends to be a function of the heat transfer efficiency, the conveying capacity of the screws, and the mechanical strength of the extruder.

Continuous mixing of silica loaded elastomeric compounds

Fatty acids commonly found in bulk elastomers such as natural rubber and certain synthetic polymers are deactivated by adding a metal oxide to the masterbatch stage where the metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of aluminum oxide, calcium oxide or mixtures thereof. Amounts range from about 0.1 phr to about 5 phr of calcium oxide, about 0.1 to about 7 phr of aluminum oxide, or about 0.5 to about 5 phr of aluminum oxide plus about 0.05 to 1 phr of calcium oxide. Deactivation of fatty acids improves tack and cure properties.

Metal oxide deactivation of natural rubber fatty acids

Vulcanizable rubber composition containing a polyfluoroethylene (PFE) and/or a polyfluoroethylene compatibilizer agent is added to a standard sidewall recipe. The PFE and/or PFE compatibilizers improve ozone resistance, improve flex fatigue properties and decrease the onset of vulcanization by increasing the rate of vulcanization. The new formula also represents a fast curing sidewall formulation.

Vulcanizable rubber composition with improved durability

A water based coating composition for unvulcanized rubber articles that comprises (1) a polymeric antidegradant latex, (2) an additional emulsifier, (3) a thickening agent, and (4) a filler/mold release/lubricating agent. The water based coating composition is placed on an uncured rubber article prior to vulcanization and results in improved molding of the rubber article and provides a final rubber vulcanizate that possesses superior antidegradative properties.

Superior vulcanization agents for rubber are prepared by reacting sulfur with at least one olefin at 120.degree.-200.degree. C. in an aqueous reaction media with agitation. In one embodiment, the vulcanization agent comprises a sulfur/olefin adduct having from about 39% to about 46% by weight of free elemental sulfur level.
