A closed-end roller cover in which the pile fabric on the end, and the portion of the core to which it is secured, is integral with the main body of the cover, and a method of manufacture thereof. The cover is formed by heating the end portion of a fabric covered blank a short distance at the end, preferably along parallel lines so as to form structural lines of weakness, and immediately thereafter crimping the still pliable end portion inwardly upon itself to form a solid end wall with adhering pile fabric.

A method of producing synthetic microcellular paint brush bristles having a roughened surface replicating a hog bristle which includes incorporating and dispersing a blowing agent into a molten extrusion mix and thereafter extruding and drawing the molten material in a manner to allow the dispersed foaming agent to expand, rupture and roughen the surface of the bristle.

Method for producing paint brush bristles

A brush with synthetic bristles which have the attributes of natural bristles including irregular surface texture for holding and applying paint. Brushes made in accordance with the invention are easy to clean while being resistant to abrasion and deterioration by water. The surface texture of the bristles also facilitates assembly of the bristles into a brush by the use of adhesive.

A pad attachment for a paint roller assembly including a pad holder affixed to a roller type paint applicator. The pad holder retains a paint trimming and smoothing material in a form of a fabric or foam. The material retained by the holder is positioned to smooth or otherwise treat the paint being applied by the roller during a painting application. In addition, the material may function to trim or 'cut in' at the interface of a surface adjacent the surface being painted. In an alternative embodiment, the invention may be part of a paint roller assembly having an adjustable splatter shield. The pad holder is integrally formed with the shield and is removably retractable and extensible along with the shield.

A synthetic bristle for brushes, including particularly paint brushes, which has attributes of natural bristle, such as the hair of swine, including an irregular surface texture which holds paint and is easy to clean, while retaining desirable characteristics of synthetic bristles such as good water and abrasion resistance, said bristle being formed preferably from a synthesized polymer, a co-polymer, or an alloy or mixture of synthetic polymers.

A pad attachment for a paint roller assembly including a pad holder affixed to a roller type paint applicator. A paint tool includes a base with at least two sides and a handle secured thereto. An edging device is pivotally and removably mounted on the tool and includes a plate with a slot. At least one position is defined in the slot by an enlargement of the width of the slot. First and second wheels are rotatably mounted in tandem on the plate and the plate may be secured to either side of the base and will pivot upon securement to allow an edge to be painted on a surface.

A device for preparing a surface for painting by removing old, peeling paint, dirt and similar material includes a mounting base to which a handle is attached. A pad is removably secured to the base to provide an abrasive/cleaning surface and, in one embodiment, includes an inner portion of absorbent material surrounded by a second portion of abrasive material. The absorbent portion will hold a supply of cleaning fluid, such as water or paint thinner to facilitate the cleansing process. In an alternative embodiment, the pad includes an inner abrasive material portion surrounded by an absorbent material.

Device for preparing a surface for painting

An extension handle for a tool such as a paint roller, paint pad or the like includes a first tubular member including an attachment device for attaching a paint roller or the like thereto. The extension handle further includes a second tubular member telescopically mounted within the first tubular member. The second tubular member includes a detent mechanism that engages one of several detent capturing devices on the first tubular member thereby defining a plurality of stops allowing adjustment of the relative position of the first and second tubular members to provide the extension feature of the handle. The handle further includes an alignment structure including a groove in one of the first and second tubular members and a tongue in the other of the first and second members that engage each other to align the first and second tubular members and the detent and detent capturing mechanism relative to each other.

A pad-type painting applicator of the type having a handle and a replaceable applicating pad includes a simplified design for use in either of two paint applying modes and an improved mechanism for removably mounting applicating pads. A relatively short handle gripping portion is secured to an enlarged base, which mounts the replaceable applicating pad, for use when painting areas close within reach of the painter and where the painter can easily move the tool in strokes generally parallel to the surface on which the paint is being applied. A threaded aperture or short cylindrical portion is provided in the base at an angle with respect to the handle gripping portion for use in conjunction with an elongated extension pole that may be secured to the tool to enable normally inaccessible areas or surfaces to be reached. A flexible tab on the base secures a slideably mounted applicating pad generally in the center thereof.

Paint applying tool

A handle for a paint brush or similar tool which facilitates the removal of the paint brush from a display device where the brushes are stacked on a cantilever-type display arm. The paint brush handle includes a generally vertical slot adapted to slidably engage a flat, generally vertically oriented cantilever arm to maintain the brushes in general relative alignment along the arm. The slot in each paint brush handle includes a pair of upwardly converging canted surfaces on the bottom end of the slot to facilitate removal of the brushes from the cantilever arm, for example by a customer desiring to purchase a brush. The paint brush handle may include a hollow interior, or the handle may be solid throughout in which case the canted surfaces terminate in a generally central crown. A generally circular aperture is provided at the upper end of the slot to define a 'keyhole' slot so that the brushes also may be displayed on a hanger having a circular cross-section.
