An electro-optic display is produced using a sub-assembly comprising a front sheet, an electro-optic medium; and an adhesive layer. An aperture is formed through the adhesive layer where the adhesive layer is not covered by the electro-optic medium, and the sub-assembly is adhered to a backplane having a co-operating member with the aperture engaged with a co-operating member, thus locating the sub-assembly relative to the backplane. In another form of electro-optic display, a chip extends through an aperture in the electro-optic medium and adhesive layer. In a third form, the aforementioned sub-assembly is secured to a backplane and then a cut is made through both backplane and sub-assembly to provide an aligned edge.

Electro-optic displays, and materials and methods for production thereof

An electrical element, such as a thin-film transistor, is defined on a flexible substrate, in that the substrate is attached to a carrier by an adhesive layer, and is delaminated after definition of the transistor. This is for instance due to illumination by UV-radiation. An opaque coating is provided to protect any semiconductor material. A heat treatment is preferably given before application of the layers of the transistor to reduce stress in the adhesive layer.

Method of manufacturing a flexible electronic device and flexible device

A display apparatus includes a plurality of electrofluidic chromatophore (EFC) pixel cells. Each pixel cell includes a fluid holder for holding a polar fluid and a non-polar fluid having differing display properties, the fluid holder including a reservoir having an orifice with a small visible area projected in the direction of a viewer onto the polar fluid, and a channel with a geometry having a large visible area projected in the direction of a viewer onto the polar fluid. The channel is connected to the reservoir via said orifice so as to enable free movement of the polar fluid and non-polar fluid between the channel and the reservoir. The reservoir is formed in a laminated resin structure of homogenous resin film layers, including an orifice film layer and a reservoir film layer.

Electrofluidic chromatophore (EFC) display apparatus

The invention relates to a display structure comprising an electrode layer () superposed on a sub-layer () wherein a surface of the sub-layer facing the electrode layer is roughened. In particular, the display structure may relate to a TFT stack comprising a layer of an electrode metal corresponding to a pixel electrode (). The pixel pad together with the data line () is used for charging of the pixel pad. The gate electrode () used is separated from the source and drain electrode () by a dielectric layer (). The structural layers of the TFT may be deposited on a suitable flexible substrate (). In order to prevent defects in the light modulating layer () from being visible, a surface of the sub-layer () underlying the electrode layer () is roughened. It is desirable to provide such improvement to, among others, electrophoretic-type displays and liquid crystal-type displays.

A display device and method for fabricating includes patterning a field shield dielectric layer to expose conductors and form a cavity over the conductors. InkJet printing a semiconductor material fills a portion of the cavity in contact with the conductors. An insulation material is deposited on the semiconductor material. A pixel pad is formed over the insulation material and the field shield dielectric layer. A pixel is formed which includes a thin film transistor with an ink jet printed semiconductor layer.

A display device includes a first electrode formed on a first substrate, and a second electrode formed on a second substrate. An electro-optical material is sandwiched between the first and second electrodes. A protective layer has a first section formed over the second substrate, a second section formed over the first substrate, and a third section formed between the first and second sections. The third section conforms to the shape of sides of the electro-optical material, the second electrode, and the second substrate.

Permeation barrier on flexible device

An electronic device () includes a first plane () and a second plane () where one of the planes can be deformed under mechanical pressure. A common contact region forms a cavity () on at least one of the first and second planes. An electrical connection () is configured to complete an electrical connection between the first and second planes wherein the electrical connection includes a solidified form of a liquid conductor dispensed in the cavity to complete an electrical path between the first and second planes.

Electronic device for a flexible display device and method the same

A method for fabricating an electronic device includes forming a layer of precursor material for forming a semi-conductor material in a cured state and exposing the precursor material to light. The precursor is heated in the presence of the light to form an insulator in areas exposed to light and a semiconductor in areas not exposed to the light. The light is preferably in the visible range. Suitable precursors may include 6,13-dihydro-6,13-(2,3,4,5-tetrachloro-2,4-cyclohexadieno)-pentacene () to form, for example, pentacene () as the semiconductor and 6,13-pentacenequinone () as an insulator. A device made in accordance with the method is also included.

Method for patterning an organic material to concurrently form an insulator and a semiconductor and device formed thereby

The invention relates to a flexible display () comprising a frontplane (), positioned on top of the backplane (). Preferably, the frontplane () is laminated on top of the backplane (). The flexible display () further comprises a bonding area (). In accordance to the invention the frontplane () extends over an area () substantially corresponding with the bonding area (). Preferably, the frontplane in the region of the bonding are () is provided with spacings () for arrangement of suitable electrical contacts for enabling a connectivity to the array of electronic pixels and/or to the array of electro-optic elements. The spacings () may be of any suitable shape being arranged individually or being interconnected with each-other to form a sole spacing on top of the bonding area ().

Flexible display and a method of producing a flexible display

A non-volatile ferroelectric memory device is proposed which comprises a combination of an organic ferroelectric polymer with an organic ambipolar semiconductor. The devices of the present invention are compatible with&#x2014;and fully exploit the benefits of polymers, i.e. solution processing, low-cost, low temperature layer deposition and compatibility with flexible substrates.

The invention pertains to a photo-sensitive composition which comprises a photochemical initiator, a polyacid or a salt thereof, and a poly(3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene) wherein the alkylene moiety is &#x2014;(CH2)n-, n being an integer from 1 to 3, or 1,2-cyclo-hexylene, which may optionally be substituted, characterized in that the photochemical initiator is a water-soluble polymer comprising at least two azide or diazonium groups. Preferably, the water-soluble polymer is chemically stable at pH 6 or less, more preferably at pH 2 or less.

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a replica, which method comprises the provision of a polymerizable resin composition between a front mold having a pre-shaped surface and a back mold having a pre-shaped surface, carrying out a curing treatment and removing the replica thus manufactured from the molds. The invention further relates to a replica obtained by carrying out a UV light-initiated cationic polymerization.
