A location system is disclosed for wireless telecommunication infrastructures. The system is an end-to-end solution having one or more location systems for outputting requested locations of hand sets or mobile stations (MS) based on, e.g., AMPS, NAMPS, CDMA or TDMA communication standards, for processing both local mobile station location requests and more global mobile station location requests via, e.g., Internet communication between a distributed network of location systems. The system uses a plurality of mobile station locating technologies including those based on: (1) two-way TOA and TDOA; (2) home base stations and (3) distributed antenna provisioning. Further, the system can be modularly configured for use in location signaling environments ranging from urban, dense urban, suburban, rural, mountain to low traffic or isolated roadways. The system is useful for 911 emergency calls, tracking, routing, people and animal location including applications for confinement to and exclusion from certain areas.

Locating a mobile station and applications therefor

Location of a mobile station using a plurality of commercial wireless infrastructures

A method for determining and reporting the position of a mobile unit to a third party via a video dial tone (VDT) network is described. The method is directed for use in a wireless communication system having at least one registration area including at least one control unit and at least one base station having a corresponding coverage area. For each of the base stations in a registration area, a plurality of analog and/or TDMA RF measurements are determined, including its link budget, for a predetermined plurality of distances and directions. These measurements are modeled as scaled contoured shapes having minimum and maximum boundaries which are used to define a bounding polygon area to describe the position of a mobile station in terms of minimum and maximum error estimate. The video dial tone network includes an interactive video delivery system, a set top terminal and a video monitor.

Method and system for position determination using video dial tone

A method for routing enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) calls from a mobile emergency user to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). The method is directed specifically for use in a wireless communication system which includes a plurality of base stations each of which is operative to communicate with corresponding mobile units within its coverage area over air interface channels. When all interface channels of the corresponding base stations of the mobile emergency user are busy, the location of the emergency mobile user will determined in cooperation with a Location Adjunct Processor (LAP). All other mobile units communicating with the corresponding base stations will be identified. Predetermined uplink and downlink RF measurements for each of these mobile units will thereafter be extracted and by reference to the same it may be determined which of the mobile units are also within the coverage areas of neighboring base stations. It may further be determined which of the neighboring base stations can support additional mobile units. Once provided with this information, automatic link transfers/handoffs/handovers will be initiated so as to open an interface channel with a currently blocked E9-1-1 call.

Method for routing emergency calls during busy interface channel

A system and method for updating a location databank of a personal location system which is directed for use in a wireless communication system. A plurality of update centers are provided at known fixed locations within a base station coverage area. Each of the update centers is operative to transmit its own pre-calibrated location information to a location databank along with real-time RF measurements for the base station. Each of the base stations is provided in electrical communication with a location adjunct processor which, in turn, is provided in electrical communication with the location databank and the public switched telephone network. Processing logic is operative to obtain the desired RF measurement at GeoPads which are provided in electrical communication with each update center. Processing logic is further operative to initiate a call to the LAP in order to transmit the measurements to the location databank along with the decoded location information so as to provide periodic updating.

System and method for updating a location databank

A method for determining position by obtaining directional information from spatial division multiple access (SDMA)-equipped and non-SDMA-equipped base stations. The method is directed for use in a wireless communication system which includes a plurality of base stations each having a corresponding coverage area. For each of the base stations, a plurality of RF measurements are determined in cooperation with a receiver, including a link budget of the base station, for a predetermined plurality of distances and directions. Determined RF measurements for each of the base stations are modeled as a scaled contour shape having minimum and maximum boundaries. Base stations which neighbor the mobile unit are determined so as to define a first bounding polygon area by their intersecting contours. The first bounding polygon area generally describes the relative position of the mobile unit. A second bounding polygon area is determined in accordance with the lobes of neighboring base stations as described in terms of azimuth angles. The intersection of the first and second bounding polygon areas are determined so as to define a location polygon which more precisely describes the position of the mobile unit in terms of minimum and maximum error estimate.
