A surge arrester includes a mounting bracket, a surge arresting element, an electrically conductive connector, and a fault disconnector. The mounting bracket forms a bracket cup. The surge arresting element is arranged to conduct in the presence of a surge. The electrically conductive connector is electrically coupled to the surge arresting element and forms a connector cup. The electrically conductive connector is received by the mounting bracket so that the bracket cup is received in the connector cup. The fault disconnector is arranged to disconnect the surge arresting element from an electrical line in the event of a fault, and the fault disconnector is housed within the housing formed by the connector cup and the bracket cup.

A wireholder includes a main body portion, an attaching portion, and a tool receiving portion. The main body portion is arranged to receive a wire to be secured to a structure. The attaching portion is affixed to the main body portion and has a configuration to facilitate the attachment of the main body portion to the structure. The tool receiving portion is arranged to receive an installing tool. The main body portion has a strength so that torque can be transferred from a power tool to the attaching portion through the installing tool and the main body portion. The installing tool is arranged to break if excessive torque is applied to the wireholder by the installing tool.

The disclosed earth anchor has a helix formed in a spiral around a hub. The helix is arranged to bear a load when the earth anchor is installed into the earth. The hub has outer and central hub portions forming a recess which receives a torque tube having inner and outer perimeters. Torque is transferred from the outer perimeter of the torque tube through the outer hub portion of the hub to the helix and from the inner perimeter of the torque tube through the central hub portion of the hub to the helix. The hub is of a unitary construction.

High strength anchor

A new and improved utility pole reinforcement system includes an elongated pole splint driven into the ground adjacent the pole and having contact surfaces adapted to engage and support the surface thereof. The splint includes a structural body spaced outwardly of the pole providing increased resistance to stress applied to the pole. A pair of brackets are spaced apart longitudinally on the body portion of the splint, each bracket having opposite end portions extending laterally outwardly and a tension strap assembly for binding the pole and splint together is connected to opposite end portions of each bracket. Each strap assembly includes at least one elongated strap of relatively thin flexible material conforming generally to the surface of the pole and formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart apertures. Clips are provided for supporting threaded elements for connecting the clips and the bracket end portions and each clip includes a pair of hook elements designed to seat in hooked engagement within selected apertures in the flexible strap so as to be readily adjustable to provide for poles of varying diameters.

Apparatus for reinforcing utility poles and the like

A metal end fitting for structurally interconnecting a crossarm brace to a crossarm and utility pole includes an extruded metal body having a dovetail recess for receiving an end portion of an enlongated wooden brace. The brace is inserted into the recess of the fitting and a bight portion of the recess abuts an end face of the wooden member. A pair of spaced apart legs integrally joining the bight portion are formed to taper toward one another to directly engage tapered dovetailed surfaces provided on opposite sides of the wooden member. A generally similar metal end fitting is mounted on an opposite end of the wooden brace. Each end fitting includes a tang integrally joining the bight portion and adapted to be secured to the crossarm or the utility pole with a single elongated fastener. The metal fittings are originally extruded so that a degree of taper is provided between the opposite legs which form the dovetailed recess, and this taper angle is greater than the degree of taper between the dovetailed surfaces of the wooden brace at the ends. Accordingly, the legs of the metal end fitting are forcefully biased by internal spring action to tightly confront the dovetailed surfaces of the wooden brace to permanently secure the metal end fitting in place on the wooded brace without requiring fasteners.

Apparatus for installing anchors in the earth using rotational power and axial thrust from a power source includes an elongated torque tube for enclosing a guy rod of an anchor and having a lower end portion adapted to drivingly engage the hub of the anchor. A drive coupling is provided for detachably interconnecting the power source to drive the torque tube and install the anchor, and the coupling includes a body having a socket for receiving an upper end portion of the torque tube and an upper end portion of the guy rod. The socket has flatted side walls formed with radial ports which are positioned to face apertures that are provided in a torque tube which has been inserted into the socket. Lock pins are slidably mounted in the radial ports and are biased toward the center of the socket. The lock pins are adapted to project into the apertures of a torque tube when fully seated in the socket and also engage and hold the guy rod of an anchor as it is driven into the earth. The longitudinal position of the lock pins is controlled by cams which are pivotally mounted on outer end portions of the pins. Control handles are provided for moving the cams between disengaged, armed, and fully engaged operative positions and the handles provide a convenient visual indication of the position of the lock pins.

Apparatus for installing anchors

A connector for cable shields comprises a U shaped bent strip of metal forming inner and outer spaced legs. Tangs are formed in each leg, extending inwards toward each other. A bolt and nut extending through the legs near the bend acts to clamp the legs together. The ends of the legs can be shaped, to assist in inserting into a cable, and to provide extra gripping formations. The legs can be strengthened by ribs along their side edges.

Connector for cable shields

An aerial terminal has a housing divided into back and front compartments by a dividing wall which has a zig-zag formation from top to bottom. A top section of the dividing wall is set forward from a bottom section and a row of apertures is formed in each section. In a preformed arrangement the apertures are oblong and inclined towards each other in pairs. Terminals having shanks fitting in the apertures have transverse holes orientated by the apertures, to be also inclined towards each other in pairs. Shrouds surround the terminals and a channel in each shroud acts to guide a drop-wire conductor into the related terminal hole. The conductor is fastened by a screw in the front of the terminal. Conductors of a stub cable are attached to the rear portions of terminals extending into the back compartment, and the back compartment is filled with potting compound, which holds on a back cover. A front cover clips on to close the front compartment. A plurality of housings can be fastened together to provide an increased number of terminals.

Aerial cable terminal

A fixed count terminal provides an enclosed housing for the connection of service wires to telephone conductors contained in a communication cable. The fixed count terminal has a support bracket which is clamped to a support strand portion of the communication cable with a mounting bar extending between the points whereat the support bracket is clamped to the support strand. A cable portion of the communication cable is clamped to the support bracket by Z-shaped brackets and ground clamps and a tension bar extends between the Z brackets. A barrier wall divides the fixed count terminal into terminal and cable compartments and has a plurality of breakaway partitions which can be removed so that terminal modules may be positioned on the barrier wall. A base is also secured to the support bracket at the bottom of the barrier wall and has grommeted openings through which the service wires may be extended into the fixed count terminal and coupled to conductors in the communication cable via the terminal modules. Terminal and cable side covers are hingedly mounted on the base and enclose respectively the terminal and cable sides of the fixed count terminal. A nozzle is located at both ends of the fixed count terminal with each nozzle forming the entrance for the communication cable into the fixed count terminal. In an alternate embodiment, an auxiliary cable may be clamped to the support bracket by a Z-shaped bracket so that conductors within the branch cable also can be coupled to the conductors in the communication cable.

Fixed count terminal

An unsheathed grease-filled cable stub has the grease removed from around the insulated wires by subjecting the cable stub to radiant heat over the length of the stub and over a major portion of its circumference while the stub is supported on a flexible open mesh of material that overlies a trough. The heated grease melts and flows downwardly for collection into the trough, the grease also flowing through the supporting mesh. The heating temperature of the cable stub is kept low enough to prevent damage to the insulation of the wires.
