An assembly for transferring a wound coil disposed around a first mandrel onto a second mandrel. The first mandrel is radially expandable between first and second outer diameters and the coil is wound onto the first mandrel when in its larger, first outer diameter which is larger than the diameter of the second mandrel. The two mandrels are disposed in side-by-side coaxial relationship and the diameter of the first mandrel is reduced for reducing the radial stress of the wound coil against the first mandrel for facilitating movement of the coil off the first mandrel and onto the second mandrel.

Assembly for cable winding and despooling

A process and structure for transferring a wound coil disposed around a first mandrel onto a second mandrel. The first mandrel is radially expandable between first and second outer diameters and the coil is wound onto the first mandrel when in its larger, first outer diameter which is larger than the diameter of the second mandrel. Vacuum assisted temporary storage fixture for optical fibers

A tool (10) is provided for inserting a wire (12) into a wire-receiving slit (13) of an IDC (14) and for trimming the excess portion of the wire following insertion. The tool includes a prime mover (24) coupled to a guide member (36) having a wire-receiving notch (60) in one end, and a slot (64) coextensive with the notch. The guide member (36) has a blade (46) that is pivotally coupled to the guide member for movement across the wire-receiving notch (60). When the guide member (36) is positioned to partially envelop the IDC (14) in the slot (64), and the prime mover (24) is actuated, the guide member forces the wire (12) seated in the notch (62) into the slit (13) of the IDC. Simultaneously, the blade (46) pivots across the guide member (36) to sever any excess portion of the wire extending beyond the IDC (14).

Wire insertion and cut-off tool and method of use

A method for encapsulating optical fibers (26, FIG. 2) comprises the steps of bonding optical fiber to a first surface of a rigid flat member (17) and placing the flat member in a substantially air-tight chamber (10, FIG. 1). An encapsulating sheet (13) is located in the air-tight chamber, such that it faces the flat member. The air pressure on the flat member is then made to be significantly lower than the air pressure on the encapsulating sheet, thereby to cause the encapsulating sheet (13) to press against the flat member (17, FIG. 3). The encapsulating sheet is made of a flexible flame-resistant material that maintains its structural integrity and does not melt or ignite at temperatures of at least two hundred degrees Centigrade. For example, the encapsulating sheet may be of Kapton (a trademark), doped Mylar (a trademark) or aluminum foil. The encapsulating sheet (13) is bonded to the flat member by an adhesive (31, FIG. 2) so that, after the sheet has been pressed against the optical fibers (26), it thereafter permanently supports each optical fiber in its assigned position.

Optical fiber encapsulation techniques

Optical fibers are encapsulated, first by bonding them to a first surface (18) of a flat member (17) having first and second opposite major surfaces. The flat member and a sheet of thermoplastic (13) are placed in an air-tight chamber (10) such that a first major surface of the sheet faces the first major surface (18) of the flat member (17). Next, the air pressure on the second major surface of the flat member is made to be significantly lower than the air pressure on the second surface of the thermoplastic sheet (13), thereby to cause the sheet to press against the flat member. The thermoplastic sheet is heated sufficiently during this process to cause it to adhere to the first surface (18) of the flat member, thereby to encapsulate the optical fibers.

A first flat surface portion (17) of an upper mounting member (11) is made to be parallel with a second flat surface portion (18) of a lower mounting member (12) by, first, supporting the lower mounting member on a spherical cushion of air defined by a lower surface portion (20). The first surface portion (17) is next brought into contact with the second surface portion (18) which causes an adjustment in the position of lower mounting member (12) so as to make the surfaces (17) and (18) coplanar. The air supply to the lower mounting member is then reversed to apply a vacuum which draws the lower mounting member (12) into contact with the support member (22) so as to fix the second surface portion (18) in a parallel relationship to that of the first surface portion (17).
