A disc for use as a rotor (10) or stator (18) in a multiple-disc brake. The disc (10) has an annular peripheral band (15) provided with a series of circumferentially spaced through slots (12) which open through a periphery of the disc. Each slot is defined by edges (13, 13a) which extend away from the periphery across the annular peripheral band (15) and are inclined in opposite directions (.alpha.) to a given radius (14) of the disc extending therebetween so that the slot tapers in a radial sense. A multiple disc brake is also provided which has a housing (46, 47) containing oil or other coolant which encloses a disc stack in the form of interleaved sets of rotor (10) and stator (18) discs. One set of discs (10) has a series of circumferentially spaced generally radially extending through slots (12) with inclined edges (13, 13a) extending from one periphery of the stack and the other set of discs (18) has a series of circumferentially spaced generally radially extending coolant access cut-outs (26) extending from the other periphery of the stack. Portions of the slots (12) and cut-outs (26) are arranged to periodically overlap each other during relative rotation of the rotors and stators at locations outside the bands of frictional contact (15) of the rotors and stators to provide a radial flow path (31) for coolant across the stack. The disc and brake are applicable to a wide range of uses including agricultural and industrial tractors.

Disc brake

The invention consists of a slack-adjuster for a brake which comprises a pair of interengaged screw threaded members which are urged towards an extended relative position by an axial bias applied to one member. The screw thread has a high helix angle to permit adjustment to take place on release of the brake and reverse rotation is prevented by frictional engagement of the leading member with a brake applying plunger part and by the use of a saw-tooth screw thread.

A load-taking device for use in the disc pack of a multi-disc brake assembly. The load-taking device is located at one end of the pack, interposed between the pack and a cylinder for applying thrust to the pack or for resisting thrust applied to the pack. It has an annular support and a plurality of hollow bell-shaped load-taking members extending from one side of the support in circumferentially spaced relation which are rounded at the ends which contact the adjacent disc of the pack.

An annular friction element for a multi-disc brake comprises pads of friction material alternating around the element with radial arms by which the pads are clamped relative to a ring joining the arms, the arms being of greater extent than the ring radially of the element.

Multi-disc brakes

An annular brake disc takes the form of a metal frame having circumferentially-distributed, part-circular apertures in which part-circular pads of high heat-absorption material are inserted. Chordal gaps of the apertures open radially of the frame and through these the pads can be inserted and then rotated into a final position where they are held by a dowel. In arrangements in which the part-circular apertures intersect each pad is cut away on one side to receive the adjacent pad except one which is cut away on both sides and another which is not cut away but which is the only pad held in its final position by a dowel.

In an aircraft wheel and disc brake assembly wherein carbon rotor discs keyed to the wheel are interleaved with carbon stator discs keyed to a torque tube fixed to the axle and in which a fixed draught of air is passed through and around the disc pack, the consequential increase in oxidation of the carbon discs is obviated or minimized by the employment of heat shield members between the keys of the torque tube and the wheel rim which define passages for the flow of cooling air isolated from the disc pack. The keys of the torque tube may be hollow and may be formed with apertures whereby the interior communicates with the passages so that cooling air also passes through the interior of the torque tube keys.

Air cooled disc brake

A disc brake comprising a number of interleaved rotor and stator elements and a brake actuator which is arranged to urge the rotor and stator elements into engagement in order to apply the brake. The engagement surfaces of the rotors and stators are provided with areas of carbon and non-carbon based friction material which are arranged so that the disc brake consists of a number of iron friction pairs and a number of carbon friction pairs, the iron friction pairs being located nearer to an open end of the brake structure so that the friction pairs most likely to be wet are those which perform best when wet.

A carbon brake disc has its torque transmitting formations (keyways or keys) reinforced by filament reinforced carbon inserts which are preferably located, and may be bonded, in cut-out areas of the disc periphery. The formations are formed by a separate series of operations from those used to form the remainder of the friction members such as by application of a filimentary reinforcement of carbonized cloth, textile tape, random textile fibers or boron fibers.
