A multi-functional composition of matter that is useful for injection into a flue gas stream to rapidly and efficiently remove mercury from the flue gas streams, particularly at above average flue stream temperatures of about 340&#xb0; F. or higher. The multi-functional composition of matter may include a fixed carbon content of at least about 20 wt. %, a mineral content of from about 20 wt. % to about 50 wt. %, a sum of micropore plus mesopore volume of at least about 0.20 cc/g, a micropore volume to mesopore volume ratio of at least about 0.7, and a tapped density of not greater than about 0.575 g/ml. These compositions may be further characterized by number of particles per gram of the composition of matter such that the composition may have at least about 0.8 billion particles per gram, or even as many as 1.5 billion particles per gram. These physical and chemical properties may enhance (1) the oxidation reaction kinetics for the oxidation of mercury species, (2) frequency of contact events, and (3) capture and sequestration of mercury, to achieve efficient mercury capture by the composition even in high temperature flue gas streams.

Multi-functional composition of matter for removal of mercury from high temperature flue gas streams

A multi-functional composition of matter that is useful for injection into a flue gas stream to rapidly and efficiently remove mercury from the flue gas stream. The multi-functional composition of matter may include a fixed carbon sorbent and minerals, halogens in the form of halide salts, as well as other physical and chemical properties to enhance (1) the oxidation reaction kinetics for the oxidation of mercury species and (2) the mass diffusion kinetics of the mercury species.

Multi-functional composition of matter for rapid removal of mercury from a flue gas

An activated carbon material for removing a contaminant from a liquid. The activated carbon material can be a plurality carbon grains that have a pore volume of approximately 0.1 milliliters per gram (mL/g) in the range of less than about 15 angstroms in width. The carbon grains can also have or contain a nitrogen-containing species having a concentration of more than 2 atomic percent nitrogen. A plurality of the carbon grains can be used to make a contactor that is operable to remove or reduce perchlorate having a concentration of 20 parts per billion (ppb) to less than 4 ppb from 4,500 bed volumes of water with the nitrogen-containing species leaching off of the carbon grains less than 0.1 mg/L. The activated carbon material can also be electrochemically regenerated.

Nitrogen-containing activated carbon material

A new aqueous-based process for cleaning organic residues from industrial equipment, reactor vessels, pipelines, valves, manufactured products, industrial components, and appurtenances. The invention employs hydrogen peroxide, and can be aided by iron and/or other catalysts or enhancers. The process is used to clean glass, stainless steel, metal, ceramic, or plastic surfaces that have become soiled, coated, or sorbed with organic material from pharmaceutical, food processing, industrial, biological, or manufacturing practices, including, but not limited to, food grease, machinery grease, oils, asphalt tar, pharmaceutical tar, biological fermentation products, polysaccharides, paints, organic dyes, glues, rubber cement, xanthan gum, aliphatic materials, or aromatic materials. Said organic material that can be removed includes solid, gelatenous, or viscous materials that coat, cling, sorb, or stick to surfaces.
