Reinforcement of structures in high-moisture environments is achieved by applying reinforcement layers which include a fabric portion and an uncured resin portion where the uncured resin contains a moisture curable silicon-modified polyether resin. The uncured reinforcement layer is cured in place about the structure to form a composite reinforcement shell. The uncured reinforcement layer is formed from either dry-woven fabric or woven fabric which is pre-impregnated with a cured resin and then coated with the moisture-curable silicon-modified polyether resin. The invention finds particular use in reinforcing bridge supports and pilings which are at least partially submerged in water. Containment layers are used to prevent de-lamination during curing of the reinforcement structure. Use of a containment layer not only prevents de-lamination caused by waves or other turbulent water, but also enhances the underwater curing process.

Reinforcement of structures in high moisture environments

A technique for applying high strength fiber fabric to strengthen beams and the connection between beams and either supported platforms or supporting vertical columns is disclosed. Fabric made of high strength fibers such as glass, boron, or carbon, is laid over the connection between a beam and a platform, or between a beam and a supporting column, and impregnated with an epoxy resin or other polymer matrix. The fabric may be additionally fastened to the structural member using adhesives, fabric fasteners, or bolts. The invention is particularly well suited for retrofitting bridges, freeway overpasses, parking structures, and the like to prevent failure during an earthquake.

Fabric reinforced beam and column connections

A method is provided for reinforcing the face or faces of walls so as to prevent or reduce the likelihood of failure when such walls are subjected to atypical loadings such as are encountered during earthquakes. The method includes the step of applying a resin-impregnated fabric layer over a portion of an exposed face of a wall to be reinforced. The method includes the further step of anchoring the resin-impregnated fabric layer to a structural member of the wall using fabric fasteners, adhesives, or a combination thereof.

High strength fabric reinforced walls

Reinforced concrete columns wherein the exterior surface of the concrete column is wrapped with a composite reinforcement layer. The composite reinforcement layer includes at least one fabric layer which is located within a resin matrix. The fabric layer has first and second parallel selvedges which extend around the circumferential outer surface of the column in a direction substantially perpendicular to the column axis. Specific weave patterns are disclosed. The composite reinforcement layer provides a quick, simple and effective means for increasing the resistance of concrete columns to failure during the application of asymmetric loads.

Method of making fabric reinforced concrete columns to provide

A fiber reinforced composite material and a method for producing the same with a smooth outer surface wherein the shrinkage induced transferring of the fiber reinforcement's pattern to the composite surface is completely or substantially inhibited through the application of a shrinkage barrier which includes uniformly dispersed microspherical particles in a compatible resin matrix.
