An open circuit detection apparatus is provided for detecting whether a connection is closed between a local node and a remote node having a known impedance. A ping source is connected to the local node. The ping source has an output for transmitting an address unique to the remote node and an input for sensing the impedance of the remote node. A test circuit is connected to the remote node. The test circuit has an address decoder for receiving the address from the output. The address decoder has a unique address and asserts a control signal upon the address matching the unique address of said address decoder. An impedance-varying device is responsive to the control signal and effects a change in the impedance of the remote node. The change in the impedance of the remote node is sensed by the input of the ping source.

A data exchange gateway for enabling the exchange of data between a vehicle data bus (VDB) and an intelligent transportation system (ITS) data bus. The gateway includes a memory accessible by both a VDB interface and an ITS data bus interface so that data and commands may be shared between each respective bus through the shared memory.

A vehicle communications network is provided which includes a ground translation circuit and interfacing transmitter circuits that achieve smooth current sourcing transitions. Included is a communications bus such as a J1850 having multiple-access for interfacing with a plurality of electronics, preferably within a vehicle. Each transceiver has a transmitter and receiver interfaced with the bus. The transceiver is coupled via a resistive element to the communications bus and sources current onto the bus when the transmitter output voltage exceeds the bus voltage. The added resistance advantageously reduces changes in current which may otherwise exist on the communications bus when current sourcing switches on and off.

Vehicle communications transceiver with loop-back diagnostic mode

A circuit monitors both digital and analog sensor readings by polling them from a single wire bus multiplex system. The circuit operates to sequentially address a plurality of smart sensor interfaces, each having an associated sensor, connected to the single wire bus. A voltage signal is supplied on the line that produces a current corresponding to the presence of a sensor at the polled interface and a current corresponding to a sensed digital or analog value where the sensor is of the digital or analog type, respectively. The currents on the bus are copied in a current mirror whose current output is applied to a resistor to produce a voltage, which in turn is converted into a digital number to be analyzed to determine the presence of a sensor at the addressed interface and its status. The current in the circuit is also measured to produce a voltage corresponding to circuit component variations and one corresponding to the contributions of the currents from the power supplies of the interfaces. These voltages correct the calculation of the voltage corresponding to the sensor analog value.

An electro-thermal actuator has linear displacement of its actuator rod accurately controlled and monitored. The actuator includes a sealed chamber containing an expansible and contractible working fluid. The working fluid is heated by way of pulse width modulated current applied to a heater in thermal contact with the fluid. As heat is applied to the working fluid, it undergoes a phase change to a gas. The resulting gas increases the pressure within the chamber, thereby exerting force on a piston and linearly displacing an actuator rod attached to the piston against the bias of a spring. The actuator includes a temperature sensor mounted within the chamber and in thermal contact with the working fluid to thereby monitor the temperature of the working fluid. The working fluid temperature is provided as an input to a feedback circuit which controls the width of the current pulses applied to the heater used to heat the working fluid. In this way, the temperature of the working fluid may be monitored and controlled, thereby allowing accurate control over the linear displacement of the moveable piston rod portion of the actuator.

A ground translation circuit in a transmitter of a transceiver of a data transmission network for transferring symbol information contained in analog pulses from circuits referenced to logic signal power to circuits referenced to an independent DC voltage ground return for transmission over a bus. Complementary ground translation circuits in a receiver of the transceiver for transferring the analog pulses referenced with respect to the independent DC ground return back to circuits referenced to logic signal power.

A transceiver device for use with a microcontroller and a symbol encoder decoder device (forming a node in a communications network) for transmitting and receiving variable pulse width modulated (VPWM) analog signals containing symbol messages over a communications bus. The transceiver accepts digital VPWM signals from the symbol encoder decoder device which were generated by the microcontroller and converts the digital signals into VPWM analog signals and then transmits the analog signal over the bus to other nodes. The transceiver also receives VPWM analog signals placed on the bus by other nodes of the network and transfers the signals in digital form to the symbol encoder decoder device which, in turn, communicates the decoded messages to the microcontroller.

The aim of the Chrysler Collision Detector (CCD) Bus System is to allow multiple microprocessors to easily communicate with each other over a common pair of wires (called a bus) using a scheme similar to a telephone party line. All microprocessors connected to the bus are able to receive all messages transmitted on the bus. Any microprocessor with a message to transmit on the bus waits until any current user is finished before attempting to use it. Whenever the bus is available, its use is allocated on a first-come, first serve basis (i.e., whichever microprocessor first begins transmitting its message on the bus after any previous message finishes gets the use of the bus). If, however, multiple microprocessors attempt to begin transmitting their messages on the bus at exactly the same time, then the message with the highest priority wins the use of the bus. All messages have unique message priority values and each message is transmitted by only one microprocessor. The subject invention provides the ability to communicate with a SCI port, a SPI port or a buffered SPI port. This allows communication with any device configured with any one of these ports, all on the same bus.

Control of a plurality of relay drivers by smart control devices and the continuous status monitoring of a plurality of switches and associated smart sensors, wherein each smart control device and each smart sensor is connected at a separate single point on a single-wire bus, are affected by a smart control and sensor device multiplex system. The system employs a microcomputer and a driver and receiver circuit for developing a particular offset square wave pulse train which is placed on the bus to provide power and control voltage signals to the plurality of smart control devices and smart sensors. The smart control devices contain circuits that respond to the wave form in a manner that causes each smart control device to drive an associated relay driver after a chosen number of polling cycles. Current signals are sent over the bus back to the driver and receiver indicative of the status of the smart control device. The smart sensors contain cirucits that respond to the waveform in a manner that causes each smart sensor to send current signals back over the single wire bus to the driver and receiver circuit and then on to the microcomputer during designated repetitive and sequential time slots. The driver and receiver circuit receives, interprets and converts the current signals from the smart control devices and the smart sensor into voltage signals used by the microcomputer for establishing a history of the status of the bus, the control devices, the sensors and the switches. The microcomputer supplies continuous and updated information to a display system indicative of the status of each control device and each sensor and its assoicated switch.
