A solid-state direct cavity combiner (DCC) transmitter system for providing megawatts of power is featured. The system includes a resonant cavity including at least one high-power output transmission line, hundreds of high-power transistors each generating an amount of RF power input directly into the resonant cavity, and a plurality of modules each including at least one pair of high-power transistors differentially driving a transmission line and a coupling loop. Each said transmission line and coupling loop extends into the resonant cavity to match an impedance of each said high-power transistors of each said module to an impedance of said resonant cavity to electromagnetically couple power into the resonant cavity to provide the megawatts of power to the high-power output transmission line.

A method and apparatus for generating light includes a chamber having a high voltage region, a low voltage region, and a plasma generation region that defines a plasma confinement region. A magnetic core is positioned around the chamber and is configured to generate a plasma in the plasma confinement region. A switched power supply includes a DC power supply and a switched resonant charging circuit that together generate a plurality of voltage pulses at the output causing a plurality of current pulses to be applied to the power delivery section around the magnetic core so that at least one plasma loop is established around the magnetic core that confines plasma in the plasma confinement region, thereby forming a magnetically confined Z-pinch plasma. Light generated by the Z-pinch plasma propagates out of a port in the light source.

A resonant cavity combined solid-state amplifier system including a resonant cavity having at least one output port coupled to a high-power transmission line. A plurality of high-power transistors are each configured to generate a variable amount of power input directly into the resonant cavity. The plurality of high-power transistors may be configured such that a failure of one or more of the plurality of high-power transistors does not substantially impede operation of the resonant cavity. A plurality of output impedance matching networks each coupled to one of the plurality of high-power transistors and extending into the resonant cavity are configured to match an impedance of each transistor to an impedance of the resonant cavity and configured to electromagnetically couple power from each of the plurality of high-power transistors into the resonant cavity to provide a combined high-power output to the high-power transmission line.

A coreless transformer ultra-violet (UV) light source system comprising a bulb including a predetermined amount of an element which efficiently emits UV light when exposed to a high current plasma state and a predetermined amount of a buffer gas therein. An optically thin mesh primary surrounds a portion of the bulb. A pulsed radio frequency (RF) oscillator is coupled to the primary configured to drive high current pulses into the primary causing the light emitting element to form a conducting secondary comprised of the element in a plasma state thereby causing the element to efficiently emit UV light.
