A system for producing chemicals, such as, ethylene or gasoline, at high temperature (above 1100 degrees C.) having a feedstock source. The system includes a chemical conversion portion connected with the feedstock source to receive feedstock and convert the feedstock to ethylene or gasoline. The conversion portion includes a coil array and a furnace that heats the feedstock to temperatures in excess of 1100&#xb0; C. or 1200&#xb0; C. or even 1250&#xb0; C. or even 1300&#xb0; C. or even 1400&#xb0; C. Method for joining ceramics to ceramics or ceramics to metals, and apparatus

A method for the production of joints between ceramic bodies such as silicon carbide bodies in which a preceramic polymer mixed with a powder, such as bimodal silicon carbide, is applied in slurry form. The mechanical and hermetic properties may be enhanced by the inclusion of additional bodies constraining the polymer slurry in the joint region, such as a collar. The thermal processing of the joint is described which provides a useful joint.

An electron gun that generates multiple electron bunches and the application of this gun to produce rf energy. The electron gun includes an rf input cavity having a first side with multiple emitting surfaces and a second side with multiple transmitting and emitting sections. The gun also includes a mechanism for producing a rotating and oscillating force which encompasses the multiple emitting surfaces and the multiple sections so electrons are directed between the multiple emitting surfaces and the multiple sections to contact the multiple emitting surfaces and generate additional electrons and to contact the multiple sections to generate additional electrons or escape the cavity through the multiple sections. Electron gun having multiple transmitting and emitting sections

An x-ray lithography device in which a beam of electrons interacts with a microwave field of a quasi-optical maser such as a quasi-optical gyrotron. This maser comprises a pair of spaced mirrors defining a quasi-optical cavity therebetween, with one mirror being provided with an orifice to permit extraction of the x-ray beam produced. A Bragg reflector is connected to the mirror orifice to reduce the microwave power loss from the device through the orifice. Electrons injected in the maser cavity are caused to 'wiggle' by the interacting microwave field, which functions as an undulator, so as to produce a non-coherent x-ray beam that travels along the longitudinal axis of the cavity and exits through the mirror orifice.

X-ray source for lithography

The present invention is a method of joining two materials by single pulse electron radiation. The method comprises the step of disposing a first material layer adjacent to a second material layer such that an interface is disposed therebetween. Then there is the step of irradiating the interface with a pulsed electron beam such that energy of the pulsed electron beam is selectively deposited in a narrow spatial region and localized at the interface to produce an effective joint between the first and second material layers in a single pulse. Preferably, before the irradiating step, there is the step of calculating an optimum temperature profile across the interface depending on electron energy, beam current density and pulse length of the pulsed electron beam. The electron energy of the pulsed electron beam is preferably in the range of 100 keV to 10 MeV. The pulsed electron beam current density is preferably in the range of 1-1000 A/cm.sup.2. The pulsed electron beam pulse length is preferably in the range of 100 nsec (10.sup.-7 seconds) to 100 .mu.sec (10.sup.-4 seconds). If desired, there can be interlayer materials disposed between the first and second materials.

Pulsed electron beam joining of materials

The present invention is based on a relatively simple mechanism which heretofore has not been tried before. The mechanism depends on modulation of a collimated beam transverse to the beam direction rather than the usual longitudinal modulation. Conversion of the transverse motion into longitudinal bunching in an output cavity is accomplished by means of the difference in path length in a bending magnet. Since the present invention does not depend on longitudinal modulation, it is suitable for pulsed superpower (1 GW) applications, but it can be equally suited for multi-megawatt cw applications. The present invention pertains to an apparatus for bunching relativistic electrons. The apparatus comprises means for imparting a periodic velocity in a first direction in a first region to electrons of an electron beam moving in a second direction. The apparatus also is comprised of means for causing electrons to follow a path length in a second region corresponding to the velocity in the first direction such that the path length is determined by the velocity imparted in the first direction. The differing path length causes beam electrons to be bunched as they exit the second region, allowing microwave power to be extracted from the bunches by conventional means.

Apparatus for bunching relativistic electrons

The present invention is an apparatus for examining a body part of a patient. The apparatus is comprised of a first detector module for detecting radiotracer emissions from the body part and a second detector module for detecting radiotracer emissions from the body part. The first and second detector modules are disposed adjacent to each other with the body part disposed therebetween. The apparatus also comprises means for backprojecting detected coincident events with respect to the first and second detector modules onto a plurality of imaging planes between the first and second detecting modules. Preferably, the backprojecting means comprises means for defining a line between a point on the first sensor array and a point on the second sensor array associated with a coincident event and means for determining the intersection of the line with each imaging plane. Preferably, the apparatus also comprises means for determining the distance and angle between the first detector module and the second detector module.

A microwave calorimeter is disclosed for substantially measuring the total icrowave energy in an applied microwave pulse. The microwave calorimeter includes: a housing having a highly reflective interior surface, a microwave absorbing device disposed in the housing for substantially absorbing microwave energy transmitted into the housing and for producing a thermal response proportional to the amount of microwave energy being absorbed, and a measurement device responsive to the thermal response for determining the amount of microwave energy being absorbed by the microwave absorbing device.

Low perturbation electron injector for cyclic accelerators

A spectrum analyzer for analyzing electromagnetic radiation which may be utilized to determine the radiation wavelength and power. The analyzer includes a gas filled chamber which has a collimating lens through which radiation is injected, and a reflective plate that reflects the radiation back toward the lens. A standing wave is created within the chamber having spatially periodic peaks. The chamber gas pressure is regulated to a pressure such that gas breakdown occurs, thereby generating a light pattern at each standing wave peak. The patterns are then photographed, and the patterns' diameters and spacing are measured from the resulting photograph. From the spacing and diameter obtained, wavelength and power may be calculated.
