Techniques are disclosed relating to calibrating sensors configured to measure both pressure and acceleration. In various embodiments, a system detects a first voltage produce by a first piezoelectric material in a hydrophone when the hydrophone is exposed to an acceleration and detects a second voltage produced by a second piezoelectric material in the hydrophone when the hydrophone is exposed to the acceleration. The system, in some embodiments, compares the first voltage and the second voltage. Based on the comparing of the first and second voltages, in some embodiments, the system determines a resistance for a variable resistor coupled to one of the first and second piezoelectric materials.

Calibration of combined acceleration and pressure sensors

Techniques are disclosed relating to sensors configured to measure acceleration and pressure. In various embodiments, an apparatus includes a first hydrophone sensor having a first piezoelectric material and a first housing structure and a second hydrophone sensor having a second piezoelectric material and a second housing structure. In some embodiments, the apparatus includes a first pair of wires configured to provide a first differential voltage and a second pair of wires configured to provide a second differential voltage. The first pair of wires may be coupled to the first hydrophone sensor and the second pair of wires may be coupled to the second hydrophone sensor. In various embodiments, the apparatus is configured to determine, based on the first and second differential voltages, a pressure and an acceleration experienced by the first and second hydrophone sensors.

Sensor system for measuring acceleration and pressure

A disclosed data acquisition system includes one or more streamers having multiple spaced apart sensor units. At least one sensor unit includes at least one digital sensor employing a quantized feedback loop to produce a digital output signal. A data recording system collects and stores data from the sensor units. The quantized feedback loop may be adapted to exert a quantized force on the sensing element. A described method for acquiring data includes deploying at least one streamer having multiple spaced apart sensor units, where at least a portion of the sensor units include a digital sensor employing a quantized feedback loop to produce a digital output signal. A stimulus event is triggered. Data is received from the sensor units and stored.

Digital sensor streamers and applications thereof

The present disclosure describes various geophysical survey systems and methods for mapping an electric potential field. At least one illustrative embodiment includes an electromagnetic (EM) source and geophysical survey cables that each includes multiple electrodes spaced apart along each geophysical survey cable's length, and multiple data acquisition units that each obtains measurements indicative of an electric potential between two the electrodes. A modeling module is included and configured to calculate a reference potential at a selected electrode for each of the plurality of geophysical survey cables, as well as a calculation module to combine signals representative of the measurements to produce signals indicative of the electric potential of each electrode relative to the reference potential.

Electromagnetic geophysical survey systems and methods employing electric potential mapping

A merged particle velocity signal is generated by merging a recorded vertical particle velocity signal, scaled in an upper frequency range using a time-dependent arrival angle as determined by velocity analysis, with a simulated particle velocity signal, calculated in a lower frequency range from a recorded pressure signal using a time-varying filter based on the time-dependent arrival time. Combined pressure and vertical particle velocity signals are generated by combining the recorded pressure and merged velocity signals.

Method of summing dual-sensor towed streamer signals using seismic reflection velocities

The present disclosure describes various geophysical survey systems and methods for mapping an electric potential field. A disclosed pressure-responsive sensor includes a flexible element contained within an enclosure and a membrane configured to exert an electrostatic force on the flexible element to cause the flexible element to respond to pressure variations on the membrane. A disclosed pressure-sensing method includes electrostatically coupling a membrane to a flexible element contained within an enclosure to transfer a pressure response of the membrane to the flexible element. Motion of the flexible element is converted into a pressure signal.

Method of summing dual-sensor towed streamer signals using cross-ghosting analysis

A time-dependent arrival angle is determined at a single receiver station in a towed streamer. Up-going and down-going pressure wavefields are calculated from pressure and vertical particle velocity wavefields measured at the receiver station. Extrapolated up-going and down-going pressure wavefields are generated from the up-going and down-going pressure wavefields displaced by a time delay based upon the time-dependent arrival angle.

Method of wavefield extrapolation for single-station, dual-sensor towed streamer signals

A method of seismic surveying using one or more vibrational seismic energy sources activated by sweep signals. The highest order harmonic that has sufficient strength to cause significant harmonic distortion of a sweep segment is determined. A number of sweep segments in excess of the number of sources is selected. Initial phase angles are selected for each sweep segment of each seismic energy source so that substantially all harmonics up to and including the highest order harmonic are suppressed. Using cascaded sweeps, seismic data are acquired and processed to substantially attenuate harmonics upto the selected order.

Method of using cascaded sweeps for source coding and harmonic cancellation

The present invention is a method for processing seismic data comprising acquiring seismic data using a sweep sequence including a plurality of cascaded sweep segments. The seismic data include a plurality of data segments and a listen time. The listen is combined with an initial data segment. The seismic data segments are phase shifted to a phase of a target data segment to be denoised (i.e. removal of ambient, harmonic and coherent noise). A difference between the target data segment and the remaining data segments is determined. If the determined difference exceeds a predetermined threshold, data in the target data segment is replaced with data derived from the remaining data segments. The data segments may be stacked to form a new target data segment. The listen time is extracted from the initial data segment.

Method of noise removal for cascaded sweep data

A method of marine seismic surveying, whereby a seismic streamer is towed in a body of water while deploying three (3) sensors in close proximity to each other. In one embodiment of the invention, the first sensor generates a first signal indicative of pressure of the water, the second sensor generates a second signal indicative of vertical movement of water, and the third sensor generates a third signal indicative of vertical movement of the streamer relative to the water. A seismic signal is generated in the water and the resulting signal is detected with each of the three (3) sensors simultaneously during time intervals following the generation of the seismic signal. The second signal is combined with the third signal to generate a fourth signal that measures vertical movement of the water with noise due to streamer vibration attenuated. The first signal is combined with the fourth signal to give a signal that attenuates the ghost due to the water surface. In a second embodiment of the invention, the third sensor is sensitive to the pressure in the water and the vertical motion of the sensor. By combining the output of the three sensors, a substantially noise-free and ghost-free seismic signal is obtained.

Noise reference sensor for use in a dual sensor towed streamer

Method is provided for determining the orientation or horizontal geophones used in marine seismic surveying. First-arrival signals are processed by rotating a coordinate system mathematically until the signal from the transverse receiver has minimum energy. The amount of rotation is used to calculate, from the known azimuth from the source, any misalignment of the horizontal geophone as the receiver is placed on the ocean bottom.

Method for determining horizontal geophone orientation in ocean bottom cables

A method for improving vibratory source seismic data uses a filter which converts a recorded seismic groundforce signal (including harmonic distortion therein) into a desired short-duration wavelet. A plurality of surveys may be carried out using a plurality of sweeps from plurality of vibrators that have their relative phases encoded, the groundforce signal of each vibrator being measured. The recorded seismic reflection signals are then processed to separate out the signals from each vibrator. In another aspect, harmonics of upto any desired order may be canceled while carrying out multiple surveys with a plurality of vibrators. In a marine environment, the recorded signal from a vibrator towed by a moving vessel is used to derive a Doppler shift correction filter that is applied to reflection seismic data.
