Described herein are methods and systems for the optical imaging of a physical specimen of interest that is in contact with, or in close proximity to, the backplane of a high refractive index solid-immersion lens (SIL), wherein the specimen comprises features of interest that act as a local high-refractive index regions. The SIL lens preferably comprises fiducial markers.

Methods, systems, and devices for super resolution solid immersion lens microscopy

A thin film polymer device including a waveguide core surrounded by dielectric material positioned on a platform. The core has a passive input portion and a passive output portion joined by a necked down active portion. A layer of EO polymer material positioned on the dielectric material overlying the active portion of the core and the core, the EO polymer, and the dielectric material all having refractive indices with the refractive index of the EO polymer being higher than the refractive index of the dielectric material. Light progressing through the core from the passive input portion to the passive output portion transitions to the layer of EO polymer material as it enters the necked down active portion and transitions back to the core as it leaves the necked down active portion.

TFP optical transition device and method

A guide transition device including a light source designed to generate a light beam, a light input port on a first plane and coupled to receive the light beam from the light source, a light output port on a second plane different than the first plane, the light output port designed to couple a received light beam to output equipment and plane shifting apparatus coupled to receive the light beam from the light input port on the first plane and to shift or transfer the light beam to the second plane. The electro-optic polymer modulator and the electro-optic polymer waveguides including an electro-optic polymer core and top and bottom electro-optic polymer cladding layers. A tunable optical waveguide laser arrangement includes a solid optical waveguide capable of guiding light along an axis between axially spaced ends thereof and being at least in part of an excitable material that emits light in response to stimulation by light. Stimulating light is launched into the waveguide for axial propagation therein and attendant emission of light by the excitable material. Two end reflectors are situated in the waveguide, each at one of the axially spaced ends thereof and extending normal to the axis to delimit a laser cavity. Each of the reflectors is constituted by a Bragg grating consisting of a multitude of axially consecutive grating elements constituted by periodic refractive index perturbations with a given periodicity. The length of the cavity, the peak reflectivity of the Bragg gratings and the gain of the excitable material are so coordinated with one another as to enable lasing in only a single longitudinal mode. The length of that portion of the optical waveguide that incorporates the two Bragg gratings and an intervening region of the optical waveguide is uniformly controlledly varied with attendant continuous tuning of the laser output wavelength without longitudinal mode hopping.

A FOG system with a high polarization extinction ratio includes an integrated optic circuit (IOC) having a waveguide array fabricated by a proton exchange (PE) process, the IOC being operatively connected for providing single mode, single polarization filtering of incident light guided from the FOG light source to the sensing loop and of the interference signal guided from the sensing loop to the detector.

Single-polarization, integrated optical components for optical gyroscopes

A one-dimensional or two-dimensional transmission mode spatial light modulator (SLM) includes two different mediums, one medium being a semiconductor comprising one or more heterojunction acoustic charge transport (HACT) channels 28 with surrounding layers 26, 30 vertically adjacent to a multiple quantum well (MQW) region 22, and the other being a transparent piezoelectric insulating substrate 10 thick enough to allow a surface acoustic wave (SAW) 13 to propagate therein. The SAW 13 is launched in the substrate 10 by a transducer 12 and generates electric fields which propagate the charge along the HACT channel 28 in the semiconductor medium 18. Electrodes 32, 34, 36 carry charge to and from the HACT channel 28, and light 40 is applied to a surface 44 perpendicular to the MQW region 22. Charge packets 19 in the HACT channel 28 invoke electric fields within the MQW region 22 which determines the optical absorption and/or index-of-refraction thereof, thereby determining the intensity and/or phase of each output light beam 46. Light modulation is achieved by modulating the amount of charge injected and/or the characteristics of the SAW 11. Various different materials for the substrate 10 may be used to provide desired efects.

Dual medium heterojunction acoustic charge transport multiple quantum

A narrowband laser source includes an optical fiber section including a core centered on a longitudinal axis and a cladding surounding the core, and having a grating region embedded in the core. The grating region includes a multitude of Bragg grating elements extending with a substantially equal longitudinal spacing substantially normal to the longitudinal axis for the grating region to significantly reduce the amount of light passing therethrough when the frequency of such light is in a predetermined narrow range around and including a predetermined center frequency, to an extent proportionate to the deviation of such frequency from the center frequency. A portion of the light emitted by a laser at a frequency dependent on the amount of electric energy applied to the laser is supplied into the core of the fiber section for propagation toward the grating region. The amount of light passing through the grating region is detected, and the amount of energy applied to the laser is varied in dependence on the extent of deviation of the frequency of such light from the center frequency in such a sense as to reduce the extent of such deviation.

Fiber embedded grating frequency standard optical communication devices

A variable light filtering arrangement includes at least one optical fiber section including a waveguiding core, and at least one permanent Bragg grating region in the optical fiber section. The grating region includes a plurality of grating elements constituted by periodic refractive index variations of a predetermined initial periodicity and cumulatively redirecting, of the light launched into the core for guided propagation therein, that having an axial wavelength within a narrow band around a central wavelength that is determined by the periodicity and refractive index variations of the grating elements. At least one of the periodicity and refractive index variations of the grating region is controlledly modified in such a manner as to temporarily change the central wavelength within a predetermined wavelength range.
