A source device () sends information to a destination device () through intermediary network elements (). If an intermediary network element () needs to discard one or more packets of information, it sends a smaller informational packet to the destination device (). Upon receiving the informational packet, the destination device can immediately begin correctional procedures.

A IP video delivery system () includes a multiplexer () for transmitting multiple data streams of packets over link () to a site having one or more receivers (). During times of congestion, the multiplexer will discard packets from its internal queues. Packets are intelligently chosen to minimize the effects on the output from the receivers () by taking into account timing information related to the packets and priority.

A multiplexer selectively chooses packets for discarding during periods of congestion. In a first embodiment, thresholds for fill levels of a FIFO queue are set for a plurality of priority types. As thresholds are exceeded, incoming packet below a set priority level will be prevented from entering the queue and packets at the front of the queue below the set priority will be discarded. In a second embodiment, packets within a queue may be marked for deletion. A forward/discard list assigns an index to a new packet and maintains a list of the stream associated with each packet. A priority index list maintains a list of packets for each priority type by index number. A video metadata buffer stores the metadata for each enqueued packet. A physical video buffer stores the packets. When an incoming packet cannot be enqueued, packets of lower priority are detected by reference to the index list and marked for discard.

A diversification route (Connection-B) is generated after establishing a first path (Connection-A) through the network () between an ingress client node () and an egress client node () through a first ingress network element () within the optical network. Information identifying the first network element is passed by the ingress client node () to a second network element () in the network. In response to receiving the information identifying the first path, an entity list associated with the first path is passed from the first network element () to the second network element (). Method and apparatus for implementing a constraint-based shortest path first ('CSPF') technique for dynamically switched optical transport networks are described. One embodiment comprises a traffic network element ('TNE') in a network comprising a traffic engineering network database (&#x201c;TEND&#x201d;) that stores network topology information for the network and bandwidth availability information for links in the network; and a routing engine that receives a request for a label switched path (&#x201c;LSP&#x201d;) with specified constraints, processes network topology information from the TEND to create a network graph comprising links meeting the specified constraints, and computes a primary path through the network, wherein the primary path comprises links selected from the network graph.

Constraint-based shortest path first method for dynamically switched optical transport networks

Method and system for implementing an inter-domain constraint-based shortest path first ('IrD-CSPF') technique for supporting hierarchical routing in interconnected multi-domain OTNs are described. In one embodiment, the invention is a method for calculating a network path in an interconnected multi-domain network. The method comprises receiving a path setup request message for a new traffic flow in the network identifying a source node in one domain of the network and a destination node in a second domain of the network; determining a common ancestor hierarchical routing domain that includes ancestor nodes of both the source and destination nodes; calculating an inter-domain path from one ancestor node to the other ancestor node that determines, for each lower-level domain, border nodes in the domain from the source node to the destination node; and for each bottom-level domain, calculating an intra-domain path between the border nodes that were determined for the domain.

Inter-domain constraint-based shortest path first technique for supporting hierarchical routing in interconnected multi-domain optical transport networks

A control and distribution protocol (CDP) is implemented for transport across a backplane bus, through a high-speed serial link or through a switching fabric connection. The protocol includes an intra-system transport of dynamic routing protocol (DRP) IP messages, the distribution of routing information within the router, the transport of control and maintenance messages, and the transport of IP and multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) traffic between ingress and egress ports. The protocol further includes a dynamic routing and control driver which interacts with dynamic routing control applications to exchange messages that are to be transmitted to packet flow processors and to handoff messages received from packet flow processors. A packet flow processor driver which services messages carried between the dynamic routing control and packet flow processors. An IP traffic interface provides transfer of IP L3/L2 protocol data unit (PDU) header primitive from the packet flow processors. Both the DRC driver and PFP driver include a framework transport interface.

Control and distribution protocol for a portable router framework

A signaling network gateway device (12) is provided for use in a signaling network (10), such as a Signaling System 7 signaling network. The signaling network gateway device (12) includes a protocol interface unit, a signaling transport unit, and a signaling gateway control unit (58). The protocol interface unit converts signaling information between a first format and a second format and exchanges signaling information in the second format with a user access element, such as a digital loop carrier (26), of the signaling network (10). The protocol interface unit may include any number of individual protocol interface units such as an ISDN protocol interface unit (50), a future protocol interface unit (52), a TAPI/TSAPI protocol interface unit (54), and an SS7 protocol interface unit (56). The signaling transport unit performs link speed conversion on the signaling information in the first format so that the signaling information may be exchanged with a transport signaling link, such as a link (15), of the signaling network (10) at a desired rate. The signaling transport unit may include any number of individual signaling transport units such as an SS7 signaling transport unit (68) and an SS7/ATM signaling transport unit (70). The signaling gateway control unit (58) controls an exchange of signaling information in the first format between the signaling transport unit and the protocol interface unit.

A remote facilitation network (10) includes a base computing equipment environment (12) having a computer (14) and a control and activation device (16). A remote user (18) requests communications with the base computing equipment environment (12) through a wireless paging service (20). The remote user (18) generates a paging message that is transmitted by the wireless paging service (20) and received at the control and activation device (16). The control and activation device (16) processes and interprets the paging message in order to activate the computer (14). The paging message includes a callback number that is transferred from the control and activation device (16) to the computer (14). The computer (14) dials the callback number in order to establish a communication link with the remote user (18). After identification and verification, the computer (14) relinquishes control of the communication link to the remote user (18) such that information exchange can be initiated between the computer (14) and the remote user (18).

Personal computer control and activation device utilizing a paging

A voice adaptation device (18) provides an interface between a narrowband local access network and a broadband asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) backbone network (16). The voice adaptation device (18) includes a T1/E1 network adaptor (50) that converts T1/E1 signals carrying narrowband voice traffic into an ATM cell format. The T1/E1 network adaptor (50) also performs echo cancelling, voice enhancement, digital voice protocol conversion, and compression/decompression on the narrowband voice traffic. The voice adaptation device (18) also includes a synchronous optical network formatter (52) that places ATM cells generated by the T1/E1 network adaptor (50) into synchronous optical network signals. The synchronous optical network signals are transmitted across the broadband ATM backbone network (16).

A distributed personal communication service system (30) includes a plurality of delivery units (14) under the control and supervision of a service unit (12). Each delivery unit (14) receives wireless call information from a plurality of radio transceivers (32) as transmitted by wireless hand held personal telephone units (34) within a zone of coverage (36) of the radio transceivers (32). Each delivery unit (14) provides the switching function and network interfaces to transmit the call information to other delivery units (14) along a fiber optic ring (16) or other wireless or wire line networks. Each delivery unit (14) also outputs call information to the radio transceiver (32) for transmission to and receipt by the wireless personal telephone unit (34). Each delivery unit (14) supports wire line telephony network interfaces through interconnection to central offices (38), local exchange carriers, and interexchange carrier carriers. The service unit (12) controls and directs each delivery unit (14) in the switching of call information from origination to destination.
