An apparatus for improved rendering includes a number of processing channels to receive multiple input content sources and to process that input content. A compositor can composite processed input content to generate a composite output signal. An output adaptation block can adapt the composite output signal along with dynamic metadata for display by a display device. Each processing channel includes a statistics generator and an input adaptation block.

A method and system for coding or decoding is disclosed. The system or method may receive a chroma subsampled picture and map the chroma subsampled picture into a non chroma subsampled format picture. The system or method may receive a non chroma subsampled picture and remap the samples into a chroma subsampled picture.

An adaptive display calibration system includes a display, a photodetector configured to capture light emitted by the display, and a set-top box connected to the display and the photodetector. The set-top box includes processing circuitry configured to transmit one or more test patterns to the display, and receive one or more measurements of the display from the photodetector in response to the test patterns. Additionally, the processing circuitry of the set-top box determines a capability of the display based on the measurements received from the photodetector and programs the set-top box based on the capability of the display.

System, method, and computer-readable medium for adaptive display calibration and profiling

A system implements multiple coding formats for coding pixels within a picture. The formats may be selected based on one or more of the input picture and encoding variables. The coding formats may have varying chroma sampling densities. Filtering may be applied to convert among the various formats or to convert a sampled input to a specific chroma sampling density. The format associated with various groups within a coded bitstream may be changed to adapt to evolution of the one or more variables or inputs.

High-throughput image and video compression

Coding circuitry may implement an indexed set of color values that stores color values for a neighbor pixel group. The coding circuitry may obtain a current pixel group for coding. The coding circuitry may code the current pixel group using the indexed set of color values when an indication that there is a compression advantage to coding using the indexed set of color values is present within an input stream. When the indication is not present, the coding circuitry may code the current pixel group using another coding technique.

Indexed color values in image coding

A system adjusts the quantization parameter used to encode an image sample (e.g., pixel component). The system accesses a quantization parameter for encoding a current image pixel from an implicit rate control and obtains a measure of another image sample within a particular distance from the sample. When the measure meets a predetermined criterion, the system adjusts the quantization parameter, encodes the pixel after adjusting the quantization parameter, and explicitly indicates the adjusting of the quantization parameter to a decoding system.

A system implements a hybrid coding mode. The hybrid coding mode may implement a transform to decompose an input stream into frequency components. The frequency components may include frequency bands such as those resulting from a wavelet transform. The frequency components may have associated coefficients which may be determined via the transform. The hybrid coding mode may also implement a predictor-based coding mode. A predictor-based coding mode uses a set of values as predictors for another set of values. The hybrid mode may be implemented by using predictor-based coding to code a portion of the coefficients. For example, a coefficient may be used as a predictor for another coefficient of same frequency component. In some implementations, dynamic selection between a hybrid coding mode and a point coding mode may be used.

A system implements rate control for encoding and decoding operations, for example, operations performed on slices of data such as image data. The system implements fine-grained bit rate control allowing for non-integer bit rates to be specified for the system. The non-integer values may allow the system to more accurately characterize a data rate of a communication link between a source and sink. The more accurate characterization may facilitate improved utilization of the communication link capacity.

A system implements rate control for encoding and decoding operations, for example, operations performed on slices of data such as image data. The system implements a transformation from actual buffer fullness to rate controlled fullness. With the rate controlled fullness model, the encoders and decoders adapt bit allocation responsive to rate controlled fullness, instead of the actual fullness.

Aspects of a method and system for hierarchical motion estimation with multi-layer sub-pixel accuracy and motion vector smoothing are presented. Aspects of the system may include hierarchical motion vector computation that enables motion vectors to be computed at each level in the hierarchy based on a distinct pixel resolution level. A smoothing algorithm may be utilized to suppress spurious motion vector generation. The motion vectors computed at one level in the hierarchy may be utilized when computing motion vectors in a subsequent level. A bias value may be computed for each motion vector that provides an evaluation metric that may enable determination of whether the computed motion vector is to be utilized to enable generation of the interpolated image frame.

Method and system for hierarchical motion estimation with multi-layer sub-pixel accuracy and motion vector smoothing

Command packets for a personal video recorder that provides for a transport stream (TS) that contains data and also includes a transport packet (TP)/TS formatted command packets. The TP/TS formatted command packet may be communicated between any number of devices, including multiple chips, multiple boards, and multiple processors. A decoder is able to decode the TP/TS formatted command packet and to perform the appropriate operation on data portions of the TS. When a TS is provided to a device not having the capability to perform the proper decoding of the TP/TS formatted command packet, that particular packet may be deemed as being unidentified (or unknown) adaptation field data. Alternatively, the packet may be identified as being corrupted data and/or irrelevant data.

Command packets for personal video recorder

An encoder may implement an indexed color history that stores color values for previously encoded pixels. The encoder may obtain a current pixel or current group of pixels for encoding and determine whether to encode the current pixel using the indexed color history. In doing so, the encoder may compare a color value of the current pixel with color values of the previously coded pixels to determine whether the current pixel is sufficiently similar to a previously coded pixel color value, e.g., by satisfying one or more similarity criteria. When the similarity criteria are satisfied, the encoder may encode the current pixel as an index value referencing the entry in the indexed color history storing a color value that satisfies the similarity criteria. When the similarity criteria are not satisfied, the encoder may encode the current pixel using another encoding method or technique.

Indexed color history in image coding

A method and apparatus are disclosed for facilitating efficient operation of trick modes in a personal video recording (PVR) system. Stream-navigation data from a data stream is captured and pre-processed to generate a frame-correlated NAV table comprising one entry for each frame within the data stream, during recording of the data stream. The stream-navigation data comprises start code data, content rating data, and conditional access data that is embedded in the data stream. During playback of the data stream in a user-selected trick mode, the frame-correlated NAV table is used to generate command packets that are sent to a data decoder along with selected frames of the data stream. The selected frames are decoded based on information in the command packets and certain selected frames may be displayed as part of the trick mode.

Method and apparatus to facilitate the efficient implementation of trick modes in a personal video recording system

Certain aspects of a method and system for motion estimation around a fixed reference vector using a pivot pixel approach may include pivoting each of the plurality of pixels in an output picture to perform a sub-pixel search in a plurality of directions around a reference vector. A plurality of cost values may be calculated for performing motion compensation for a plurality of pixels in the output picture along a plurality of directions around the reference vector. A motion vector may be generated corresponding to the least calculated cost for each pixel in the output picture based on the calculated plurality of cost values.
