An active retractable seal assembly for use between rotating and non-rotating turbo machinery components including: a plurality of seal rings mounted to the non-rotating component, the seal rings movable toward and away from the rotating component between respective closed and open positions as a function of pressure drop across the seal rings, wherein the seal rings are normally in the open position; and a fluid bypass circuit for directing fluid around one or more of the plurality of seal rings to reduce the pressure drop across the one or more of the seal rings, thereby causing the one or more seal rings to move towards the open position under the action of spring(s) or actuator(s).

Active retractable seal for turbo machinery and related method

Disclosed is an actuator that includes a cylinder having an input port, a piston disposed at least partially inside of the cylinder, and one or more piston rings disposed in a circumferential piston ring groove or grooves. The actuator also includes at least one spring, inserted into the circumferential piston ring groove adjacent to the one or more piston rings and a high pressure side of said piston ring. The spring preloads the one or more piston rings to seal between a low pressure face of the one or more piston rings and a low pressure face of the circumferential piston ring groove. The invention also includes a method for moving an adjustable seal in a radial direction using the piston-ring sealed actuator. The method includes moving the adjustable seal in an axial direction, breaking a primary axial contact between the adjustable seal and a primary sealing face.

Fluidic actuator for application inside turbomachinery

A steam turbine comprises a steam turbine casing, a rotor, and at least one compliant plate seal assembly situated between the casing and the rotor. The compliant plate seal assembly comprises a supporting member being stationary with respect to the casing, a plurality of plate members movably mounted to the supporting member and extending towards the rotor, each plate member being inclined with respect to a rotation direction of the rotor, and an actuator for selectively exerting a pressure to retract the plate members in a direction away from the rotor.

Adaptive compliant plate seal assemblies and methods

An insert and method for altering a through-hole in a body, such as a steam balance hole in a steam turbine rotor wheel. The insert has a body with oppositely-disposed first and second ends, a flange radially extending from the second end of the body, and an outer surface at a perimeter of the body between the first end and the flange. A first bore within the body defines a first opening at the first end, and the first bore and outer surface of the body cooperate to define therebetween a wall capable of being plastically deformed in a radially outward direction. A second bore within the body communicates with the first bore and has a smaller cross-section than the first bore. The installation method entails installing the insert in a through-hole and flaring the wall to clamp the axial thickness of the body between the flange and flared wall of the insert.

Insert for through-holes and method therefor

A method of assembling a turbomachine that includes a rotor and a stationary component is provided. The method includes coupling a housing to the stationary component using at least one biasing member, wherein the housing extending circumferentially about the rotor. The method also includes coupling at least one annular ring to the housing, and coupling a plurality of plate members to the housing such that the at least one annular ring extends from the housing towards the rotor and partially through the plurality of plate members.

Compliant plate seal with an annular ring for turbomachinery and methods of assembling the same

A turbine wheel hole plug that includes: 1) an approximate cylindrical body, the cylindrical body sized such that the cylindrical body fits snugly into a turbine wheel hole; 2) a first flange at a first end of the cylindrical body, the first flange being approximately cylindrical in shape and having a diameter that is larger than the diameter of the turbine wheel hole; and 3) a second flange at a second end of the cylindrical body, the second flange comprising a flared flange. The first flange and the second flange may lock the cylindrical body into a preferred position in the turbine wheel hole.

Apparatus for plugging turbine wheel holes

A seal arrangement for sealing the space between a rotating element and a stationary element, the sealing arrangement comprising a compliant plate seal housing supported adjustably in the stationary element, the compliant plate seal housing supporting a compliant plate seal; and a spring system provided between the compliant plate seal housing and the stationary element to bias the compliant plate seal housing in a direction away from a surface of the rotating element. Alternatively, or additionally, one or more actuators may be provided to move the compliant plate seal housing in a direction away from a surface of the rotating element.

Retractable compliant plate seals

A method for plugging a turbine wheel hole in a turbine wheel. The method may include the steps of: 1) obtaining a turbine wheel hole plug that includes an approximate cylindrical body, a first flange at a first end of the body, and a hollow cylinder at the second end of the body, wherein the body, the first flange and the hollow cylinder are sized such that: a) the cylindrical body fits snuggly into the turbine wheel hole; b) the first flange comprises a diameter that is greater than the diameter of the turbine wheel hole; and c) the hollow cylinder protrudes from one end of the turbine wheel hole when the turbine wheel hole plug is inserted into the other end of the turbine wheel hole until the first flange abuts the turbine wheel; 2) positioning the turbine wheel hole plug into the turbine wheel hole; and 3) deforming the hollow cylinder so that the hollow cylinder flares outward.

Methods for plugging turbine wheel holes

Methods and apparatus for a packing ring segment assembly for sealing a turbine gas path are provided. The assembly includes a sealing portion including radially inwardly directed teeth, and a dovetail mounting portion including a hollowed out portion including a biasing member internal to the packing ring segment. The biasing member is coupled to the packing ring segment and configured to engage a pair of annular shoulders of a dovetail groove in the turbine such that the packing ring segment is biasing radially outward at relatively low turbine loads and low working pressure, and at relatively high turbine loads and high working pressure a working fluid overcomes the radial biasing member forces and urge the packing ring segment radially inward.

Method and apparatus for variable clearance packing

An actuation pressure control system effects actuation of adjustable seal segments between stationary and rotating turbomachinery members. At least one actuator is coupled with each of the adjustable seal segments and controls a position of the seal segments, respectively. A pressure system is disposed within the turbomachinery that measures or estimates ambient pressure representing an actuator back pressure acting against the actuator. A pressure regulator via a controller pressurizes the actuator to a level sufficient for a desired seal operation and controls actuator pressure based on the actuator back pressure.

Actuation pressure control for adjustable seals in turbomachinery

Disclosed herein is a packing ring assembly including a packing ring segment, a bar, a cover plate, and a spring. The packing ring segment has an axial slot. The bar is disposed within the slot. The cover plate is disposed along an outer periphery of the packing ring segment. And, the spring is compressed between the bar and the cover plate.

Steam turbine variable clearance packing

A seal assembly includes an annular hanger having a supporting ledge. An arcuate seal segment includes an outer rail mounted on the ledge and supporting an inner seal. An arcuate carrier is mounted between the hanger and the rail, and includes a piston mounted in a bore. The bore is selectively pressurized to deploy the piston between the hanger and rail for temporarily retracting the seal segment from an adjacent rotor component.

In a steam turbine high pressure end seal region, brush seals are provided between first and second pressure regions having a pressure drop in excess of the sealing capacity of an individual brush seal. To use brush seals between the first and second regions, one or more intermediate pressure regions are maintained at a substantially fixed predetermined pressure between the first and second pressure regions. Brush seals are interposed between adjacent pressure regions whereby the pressure drop between adjacent pressure regions is within the sealing capacity of the individual brush seal disposed between the adjacent pressure regions.

An insert assembly is provided for a rotary machine wherein the rotary machine comprises a rotor and a casing. The rotor comprises a generally longitudinally-extending axis. The casing is generally coaxially aligned with the axis. The casing circumferentially surrounds and is radially spaced apart from the rotor. The insert assembly comprises a channel circumferentially disposed on the rotor and an insert circumferentially disposed in such channel such that the insert assembly is configured to thermally isolate frictional heat from the rotor to the insert.
