A sharpener drive for the straight blade of a fabric cutting machine receives its motion from the crank wheel which drives the blade. A drive wheel, which selectively engages the crank wheel, drives a gear train which drives a gear mounted in splined relationship with an elongated shaft. A sharpener is mounted on the elongated shaft for selective engagement with the straight knife. An actuator is attached to the elongated shaft for sliding the elongated shaft through the gear with which it is splined to thereby move the sharpener axially of the knife while the gear rotates the elongated shaft to drive sharpener wheels. A link is engageable by the elongated shaft in its stored position for effecting disengagement of the drive wheel from the crank wheel. A latch includes a camming portion for moving the latch into locking engagement with the cutting machine housing when the elongated shaft is moved to its stored position. The sharpener consists of first and second sharpener wheels at a lower and higher elevations, the placement of the sharpener wheel at the lower elevation being for compensating for the upward movement thereof inherent in its linkage before it can engage the sharpener blade on the upstroke of the sharpener.

A guard and sharpener construction for a rotary cutting machine having a base, a circular knife mounted on the base, a motor for driving the circular knife, a standard for mounting the motor above the base, an elongated slotted rod slidable to cover a segment on the leading edge of the circular knife, a pair of sheet-like guard members mounted on the mounting arms for the sharpener wheels, the guard members covering opposite sides of the knife above the segment, a pivotal shaft and associated mechanism for mounting the arms for movement between a sharpening and a non-sharpening position, with the rod member, the sheet-like guards and the sharpener arms being so oriented relative to each other so as to permit the sharpener to be used in all positions of the rod-like guard member, and a keyway and set-screw indexing structure for mounting the arms on the pivotable shaft.

A combined prong shield, grounding construction and locking arrangement for first and second plug sections mounted on a metal motor housing including a grounded metal protective shell surrounding the prongs extending outwardly from the first plug section, prong receiving receptacles in the second plug section, a grounding post on the second plug section for reception in a slot in the protective shell formed between spaced tines, a clamping nut on the post biased toward the tines so as to maintain good grounding contact therewith as the post enters the slot, and upturned ends on the tines for tending to prevent the second plug section from being withdrawn from the first plug section after they have been assembled.
