Potentiated insect repellent compositions comprising a combination of Deet and certain bicyclic lactones having insect repellent properties are disclosed. The lactones comprise compounds of the formula: ##STR1## or the corresponding unsaturated compounds thereof having the formula: ##STR2## wherein R, R', R' and R'' each are lower alkyl or hydrogen; wherein y is an integer from 1-3, and x and z each are 0 or 1, with the proviso that y is 1 or 2 when x is 1. Preferably, R, R', R' and R'' each are hydrogen or methyl. Such compositions preferably further include a carrier. A method of using such a potentiated composition to repel an insect from a situs comprises applying to such situs an effective amount of the composition, with or without the carrier.

Potentiated insect repellent composition and method

A single-stage quadrupole mass analyzer is provided with a highly sensitive electron multiplier, a turbomolecular pump, and a mass correction lens placed between the quadrupole sensor unit and the turbomolecular pump. These components are arranged and selected to provide a substantial increase in sensitivity permitting the direct analysis of organic compounds in the gas phase in the ppb and high ppt concentration range. The placement of the mass correction lens and the area of its aperture has a pronounced effect on the detection limit, the optimum aperture area is a function of the mass of the molecules to be detected, and preferably an iris diaphragm is used to permit manual of automatic adjustment of the aperture area to a predetermined optimum for each of the different substances to be detected. Preferably the electron multiplier voltage is also variably selected and reset during the scanning of each fragment ion to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio of the electron mutiplier. The mass analyzer is sufficiently compact and economical to provide on-site analysis and the continuous monitoring or control of industrial processes.

Mass analyzer system for the direct determination of organic compounds

Compositions containing certain bicyclic lactones and having insect repellent properties are disclosed. Such compositions comprise a compound of the formula: ##STR1## or the corresponding unsaturated compound thereof having the formula: ##STR2## wherein R, R', R' and R'' each are lower alkyl or hydrogen; wherein y is an integer from 1-3, and x and z each are 0 or 1, with the proviso that y is 1 or 2 when x is 1; and a carrier. A method of using such a repellent composition to repel an insect from a situs comprises applying to such situs an effective amount of the composition, with or without the carrier, and thereby repelling the insect from the situs.

This invention provides novel benzopyran derivatives of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl group of 3-10 carbon atoms. The compounds of this invention are useful as antihypertensive agents.
