A method of making a supported catalyst for reforming of steam and hydrocarbons and a steam-hydrocarbon reforming process using the supported catalyst. The supported catalyst is made from a mixture comprising 20 to 99.5 mass % of lanthanum-stabilized &#x3b3;-alumina and/or lanthanum-stabilized &#x3b8;-alumina, 0 to 60 mass % oalumina, 0 to 25 mass % of calcium carbonate and/or magnesium carbonate, and 0.5 to 5 mass % of graphite, a cellulose ether, and/or magnesium stearate. The supported catalyst has a porosity between 55% and 75% and a pore volume between 0.3 cc/g and 0.65 cc/g.

Complex metal oxide-containing pellets and their use for producing hydrogen. The complex metal oxide-containing pellets are suitable for use in a fixed bed reactor due to sufficient crush strength. The complex metal oxide-containing pellets comprise one or more complex metal oxides and at least one of in-situ formed calcium titanate and calcium aluminate. calcium titanate and calcium aluminate are formed by reaction of suitable precursors in a mixture with one or more complex metal carbonates. The complex metal oxide-containing pellets optionally comprise at least one precious metal.

The present invention provides a process for making a complex metal oxide comprising the formula ABO. The process comprises the steps of: (a) reacting in solution at a temperature of between about 75&#xb0; C. to about 100&#xb0; C. at least one water-soluble salt of A, at least one water-soluble salt of B and a stoichiometric amount of a carbonate salt or a bicarbonate salt required to form a mole of a carbonate precipitate represented by the formula AB(CO), wherein the reacting is conducted in a substantial absence of carbon dioxide to form the carbonate precipitate and wherein the molar amount of carbonate salt or bicarbonate salt is at least three times the stoichiometric amount of carbonate or bicarbonate salt required to form a mole of the carbonate precipitate; and (b) reacting the carbonate precipitate with an oxygen containing fluid under conditions to form the complex metal oxide.

Processes are provided for the storage and release of hydrogen by means of a substantially reversible catalytic hydrogenation of extended pi-conjugated substrates which include large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with nitrogen heteroatoms, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with oxygen heteroatoms, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with alkyl, alkoxy, nitrile, ketone, ether or polyether substituents, pi-conjugated molecules comprising 5 membered rings, pi-conjugated molecules comprising six and five membered rings with nitrogen or oxygen hetero atoms, and extended pi-conjugated organic polymers. The hydrogen, contained in the at least partially hydrogenated form of the extended pi-conjugated system, can be facilely released for use by a catalytic dehydrogenation of the latter in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst which can be effected by lowering the hydrogen gas pressure, generally to pressures greater than 0.1 bar or raising the temperature to less than 250&#xb0; C. or less, or by a combination of these two process parameters.

The present invention relates to an improved monolith catalytic reactor and a monolith support. The improvement in the support resides in a polymer network/carbon coating applied to the surface of a porous substrate and a catalytic metal, preferably a transition metal catalyst applied to the surface of the polymer network/carbon coating. The monolith support has from 100 to 800 cells per square inch and a polymer network/carbon coating with surface area of from 0.1 to 15 m /gram as measured by adsorption of N or Kr using the BET method.

The invention is a process to regenerate monolith catalytic reactors employed in the liquid phase hydrogenation reactions, particularly those kinds of reactions involving nitroaromatic compounds. The catalytic metals in the monolith catalytic reactor are deactivated by carbonaceous and deactivating byproducts and must be regenerated to extend the catalyst service life and reduce costs. The regeneration process involves two steps: initially passing an oxidizing gaseous mixture through the monolith catalytic reactor at an elevated temperature and for a time sufficient to remove carbonaceous and deactivating byproducts; and then passing a reducing gas though the monolith catalytic reactor previously exposed to the oxidizing gas under conditions for reducing the catalytic metal to its reduced state.

The present invention relates to an improved for the hydrogenation of an immiscible mixture of an organic reactant in water. The immiscible mixture can result from the generation of water by the hydrogenation reaction itself or, by the addition of, water to the reactant prior to contact with the catalyst. The improvement resides in effecting the hydrogenation reaction in a monolith catalytic reactor from 100 to 800 cpi, at a superficial velocity of from 0.1 to 2 m/second in the absence of a cosolvent for the immiscible mixture. In a preferred embodiment, the hydrogenation is carried out using a monolith support which has a polymer network/carbon coating onto which a transition metal is deposited.

This invention relates to an improvement in a process for the catalytic hydrogenation of aromatic amines and to the resultant catalyst. The basic process for hydrogenating both mononuclear and polynuclear aromatic amines comprises contacting an aromatic amine with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst under conditions for effecting ring hydrogenation. The improvement in the ring hydrogenation process resides in the use of a rhodium catalyst carried on a lithium aluminate support. Often ruthenium is included.

This invention relates to a process for producing a nonequilibrium distribution of methylamines by the catalyzed reaction of methanol and/or dimethyl ether with ammonia and by the catalytic reforming of a methylamine containing feedstock. One process selectively affords a reaction product enriched in mono and dimethylamines and low in trimethylamine, at high conversion of methanol or dimethylether. A variation of the process effects reforming a methylamine containing feedstock, optionally containing ammonia over a catalyst. The key to achieving this low TMA selectivity at high conversion resides in the use of a microporous zeolite, preferably chabazite, catalyst having a geometric selectivity index (GSI) less about 3, a shape selectivity index (SSI) greater than about 5 and a sorption capacity for 1-PrOH of at least 0.5 mmol/g.

The present invention is directed to active compositions, such as adsorbents and catalysts, which comprise cuprous compounds dispersed on amorphous oxide or carbon macroporous supports. The present invention is directed to a process for adsorptive separation of carbon monoxide or olefins from gas mixtures using adsorbents, which comprise cuprous compounds dispersed on amorphous oxide or carbon macroporous supports. The compositions are prepared by impregnating cupric compounds on, preferably pretreated, supports with the aid of an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt of a di- or polycarboxylic acid dispersant, such as ammonium citrate, followed by reduction of the cupric compound to the corresponding cuprous compound. An alkylaromatic hydrocarbon feed stream is hydrodealkylate in the presence of a catalyst having a reduced rate of deactivation, or a lower coking tendency. The catalyst comprises a gamma-alumina support containing 8 to 12 wt. % Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 and 0.2 to 0.7 wt. % Na.sub.2 O and having a surface area from 175 to 275 m.sup.2 /g and a pore volume from 0.5 to 1.2 cc/g. The catalyst is also useful in the hydrodesulfurization of thiophene containing hydrocarbon streams.
