A structure and method for fabricating imagers that detect light from the backside of the wafer. The structure may have less complex focusing, reduced crosstalk, tighter pixel packing density, increased quantum efficiency, and wafer-level packaging. The fabrication of the imager includes forming an imaging device on a silicon wafer, adhering an interconnect wafer to the device wafer, forming interconnects on the interconnect wafer, etching away the substrate of the device wafer, and patterning additional layers such as nitrides, color filter arrays, and lenses on the backside of the device wafer.

Backside illuminated imager and method of fabricating the same

A method and structure for providing a high energy implant in only the red pixel location of a CMOS image sensor. The implant increases the photon collection depth for the red pixels, which in turn increases the quantum efficiency for the red pixels. In one embodiment, a CMOS image sensor is formed on an p-type substrate and the high energy implant is a p-type implant that creates a p-type ground contact under the red pixel, thus reducing dark non-uniformity effects. In another embodiment, a CMOS image sensor is formed on an n-type substrate and a high energy p-type implant creates a p-type region under only the red pixel to increase photon collection depth, which in turn increases the quantum efficiency for the red pixels.

Methods, structures and sytems for an image sensor device for improving quantum efficiency of red pixels

A method, apparatus, and system that provides one or more charge collecting protection regions in a pixel array, each formed below a storage region of a pixel cell, but not below at least one photosensor of one pixel of the array. The storage region includes a floating diffusion region and/or a storage gate in the pixel cell of the imaging device. The protection regions can keep stray charges from reaching the storage regions.

Imaging method, apparatus, and system providing improved imager quantum efficiency

A barrier implanted region of a first conductivity type formed in lieu of an isolation region of a pixel sensor cell that provides physical and electrical isolation of photosensitive elements of adjacent pixel sensor cells of a CMOS imager. The barrier implanted region comprises a first region having a first width and a second region having a second width greater than the first width, the second region being located below the first region. The first region is laterally spaced from doped regions of a second conductivity type of adjacent photodiodes of pixel sensor cells of a CMOS imager.
